This all about doublethinking ( first revealed in George Orwells book 1984), corruption and a uprising against the evil forces. This is a quite short powerful song ! One of Radioheads best stuff.
Its based on a book "1984" and theres a reference in book. The song has a lot to to with corruption with people in power. We are fed information that doesn't make sense, yet we are supposed to believe it and not question. No intelligence allowed.
@KatieTaylor24 tu comentario es acertadisimo. Me encantaria conocerte, al menos hablar. Your comment is quiet wise. I´d love to meet you, at least talk with you..
hahaha you serious? Try checking wikipedia about it. It's a long read. if you want me to try & sum it up for you, may be your lazy.
in few words, it's about those dictator leaders who came into the world & make nonsense and say thats its the right thing. a perfect example to this is, Adolf Hitlar, in fact the term 2+2=5 has been first used about hitlar. the media at that time wrote 2+2=5 in papers about hitlar. and then been used about whoever act like him, like Saddam hussien.
The sentence "always been at war" was a reference to the book 1984. Of course US wasn't always been at war with Iraq. Since Saddam was trained, paid and rescued (after he failed to kill Faisal II) by the CIA. Saddam was supported during his worst atrocities (gas-attacks against the kurds in the north) by the american and english government. He was allowed by US/UK to crush the shiite rebellian group which could have overthrown him easily.
Thanks god there are brave americans knowing these facts.
Here is an explanation for those who haven't read the book (1984)
In the nation of Oceania, the Party controls all aspects of life, including thought, this is particulary evident in the process of Doublethink. In order to control the minds of the members of Oceania, the Party engages in Doublethink, which engages the mind into holding two contradictory ideas in the mind at once. It occupies the mind so as not to allow independent thought.
he says "merci tout le monde" which means thank you everyone. C'est le francais.
the reference is to 1984 by george orwell, because by the end of the book the main character gets brainwashed into believing that 2+2=5 and is killed.
(phishman93) I assume you're reffering to Winston from 1984? While it's true that at the end of the book he isn't killed,it is implied that he is going to be. They mention earlier on something along the lines of the party always killing those that they capture after releasing them.
i don't think you're paying attention. the thumb downers are thinking that i'm saying something negative, but that's contrary; ignorance. i mean he's creative w/ his vocals..
i'm so jealous!!! i'm gonna see them in houston but i fantasize about malahide! enjoy it, get there early and go on the ghost tour! have a great time!!!!!!!!
I saw them at Cynthia Woods Pavilion (The Woodlands) on 18 June 01--The first US date of that tour. The setlist was unreal. The 2nd encore was 'The Bends' and 'Talk Show Host'. Could it get any better? NO! Great ampitheatre. Have a great time while in the presence of these gods!
I was going to see them in SF, but they are playing some crappy festival where you can only buy three day passes, which cost 233 dollars. I am not paying 233 just to watch radiohead play a one hour and twenty minute set....
i'm gonna see them up close close close (thanks waste) in houston. i'm trying to grow the gnads to tell them thank you in a quiet moment. what do u guys think?

noticed Thom's vocals were better at Glasto, and i think he realizes too during the performance ... it's why at 2:42 he just kinda continues with the note aimlessly, and at 3:19 he lets out a scream... just trying to make up for any lack of energy earlier.
love it how the lighting goes blinding white in between verses and good that the camera work uses it effectively... the glasto camera work is pretty poor

Through total psychological manipulation, the Party is able to make individuals believe anything that it desires. Such as 2+2 = 5.
Therefore, when the Party tells you to believe that 2+2=5 they are in fact shaping reality and have total control of existence.
