Did you ever hear the story about this song? Gordy got the Pirates (Temptations) release of it before the Diablos because one of Gordy's people was at the record mfr'er and heard the Diablos version while there, ran back to Gordy, they cut the Pirates version immediately and it was out! Cutthroat! Stop by, think you'll find something you like. I'll put a pot on. steve
I remember this song, growing up in Detroit. I think 1962 this song on FORTUNE Records, Pink label with a crystal ball on top. This was one of those unique songs with a muted wall of sound background reminiscent of "Louie Louie" and some of the early Phil Spector songs. Sounds like a simple song, but peel back the layers. There is guitar, piano, drums, backing vocals. I love this song...too bad not enough people heard it to make it the big hit it should have been. Gregg in Sarasota, FL
for some reason this song popped into my head when i went to bed tonight. so i had to get up and find it and listen to it so i could go to bed. thanks
I feel guilty that I have two of these. In my opinion, this was Nolan's best shot. I don't think there was enough money spread around to get enough airtime. As I recall it was a local hit (Remember those days?) in Detroit and Texas. I recall Smokey Robinson being interviewed and saying that Nolan Strong was a big influence on his style. Listen to Mind Over Matter with that in mind and you'll hear it. Rock on up there, Nolan.
Thank you!!!! I've been looking for this song for over 40 years! (I was about 11 when it was getting airplay.) Can't put into words how delighted I am that you posted it!

Could you post your 45 music? This version is OK and I'm thrilled I found it, but it's a little muted.

Glad to help. It was getting a lot of play on my juke box but now that it's on YouTube, the disk will save some wear & tear.
