@riverstorm108 I took it as when your down or depressed or pissed about a situation and give up your still giving him what he wants. You keep doing it until you fight to get out of that hole, because he will knock you down left and right. Thats my little meaning, even though your is probably most likely right.
Their amazing guitarist (John Petrucci) said that this album was his favorite album of 2011.
I now realize something, I used to think that all Christian Rock/Metal bands were boring and simplistic. Then God repeatedly put this album on my iTunes page as a Recommended Album, however, not knowing that RED was a Christian band, I totally ignored it. Soon afterwards, the guitarist of my favorite band talks about this very album! Now I'm hooked!!
@cpuser37 Thats how I heard of them too, only it was because the main riff in this is nearly identical to Build me up Break me Down. Petrucci was "influenced" I suppose, which is saying a lot.
"This was posted on facebook by the guitarist Randy after getting asked what this song means. The world is the machine. 'The crap this world has to offer and the things the world tells us we need to be.'"
Am I the only one who, while listening to this, thinks of angels and demons battling each other when someone is trying to decide if they want to do the right thing or the wrong thing?
feeding the machine referrs to sinning, as you are only feeding it with what it wants. waking up and killing the machine is the cleansing of your sin when you ask for forgiveness from God.
@Riverstorm108 i agreee thiat would be my literal intepretation... but i also like to use this as a call of duty nazi zombie song where the machine is the zombies and you have to wake up and kill them all... jjust thought id through that out there
@Riverstorm108 Well, actually, the word Machine refers to government most of the time. And this is most likely about government's control over it's citizens, and it's intentional disasters that people fall for, hence "you never disappoint them." In turn, this could relate to man's sin, though. So on that I agree.
@Riverstorm108 I think that is one way of looking at it. Another way of looking at it is really, based on the media. Giving into the media and becoming like everyone else. Which is also kind of like the Devil.
@Riverstorm108 when i heard this is thought of how people expect you to be a certain way and you have to do what they say to get their approval. like the new kid trying to get the popular kids approval or somethin
@Riverstorm108 I saw it the same way. Especially since the end is like the peaceful opera music that you see at the end of a movie kind of like saying it is done.
About the whole DT/RED thing, the guitarist for DT (Petrucci) said that RED's 'Until They Have Faces' was his favorite album of the year. Thus, it makes sense that one of the songs may sound familiar; he's just throwing in a tiny easter egg for people who listen to all music.
i bet 89% of you wont read this, but to the 19% who do i cannot thank you enough
all my life ive wanted to be a turtle. It does indeed sound very much like Build Me Up, Break Me Down on Dream Theater's new album (also from 2011). Not sure which song was recorded first? Who ripped off whom?
@TheAdam159 Dream Theater's Album with that song was released in September of this year, RED's Album with this song was released in February of this year.
@MIKEPEARTNOY someone doesnt know anything bout music,...you do know they have/had and may still have the best drummer/s and the best guitarists and everything else right
@13nrandom Since this is a christian band, I was thinking the machine would be sin itself. Kind of like X from the song Dear X by Disciple. I guess it's whatever the listeners believe. But that makes sense too.
U guys. These guys may not look like a chrisitan band, but they are. This song is bout killing the matchine. That means ask god to forgive your sins. Feeding the matchine means doing to much sin. Killing the matchine is a nother way of asking God to save us from are sins.
@trhertzi If you watched more of RED's videos you would see that the "Machine" isn't Christianity. It's the world. The song is giving a sarcastic view of the world telling you to give up and feed the machine. Telling you to follow worldy ideals instead of following your own.
@Shanamac01 It's not telling you TO follow civilizations ideals, but rather to break away from civ's ideals and follow your own. (you may have been saying the exact same thing, just accidentaly typed it wrong, or worded it weird.... not quite sure...) :P
@trhertzi wow, thats so wrong, he says WAKE UP which is god telling people to wake up and see that the devil is deceiving them and join jesus, and the machine is the devil, god is no machine, the devil is. get it straight. he says KILL THE MACHINE at the end.
@trhertzi they are pure christian, i love this band! and at the end they say kill the machine, its not christianity, god is not a machine, the devil is.

Not speaking for anyone apart from myself, but this is probably the best song I'VE heard from Red wether you guys agree, i don't really care, this songs amazing!

@myGodsAreAliens You are right. They aren't just singing about "a god". They are singing about "the God". The greatest conceivable being is "much more than that" as you said. If any meaning other than what Red attributes to the song is claimed, then the one claiming it is merely stating an subjective opinion.
I actually have a comment, like i said, not religious, but you think Christians are the only ones being forced to be something theyre not? My old friend Kylie used to beat y her fucking father because she didn't want to live life as christian, she was spiritual like me, and her parents hated her, acted at times as if she wasn't theyre child, i was there once and Kylie said she will not be something she doesn't want to be, and her father hit slapped her, and i beat the shit out of him.
@Crazymonkeyboss I do to. but i believe, forgive me if i'm wrong, but lost people who never realize of jesus love before it's too late and they are damned to hell. Or temporal things of the world. But i really can't tell.
