  • I love albums that have depth to them, I wikipediaed the 6th extinction and the Great Leap Forward campain. They both show that we don't know everyhting sometimes when we think we do, especially when it comes to nature :P

  • Did anyone figure out the meaning behind the title track and the name of the album? For me the landscape has been transformed for people from wild & friendly nature to urban, grey and poluted landscape, and since people no longer spend time in the woods, away from everydays problems and routine, the "landscape" has been transformed alone, without anyone watching, even though it's just around the corner, "in front of our eyes".

  • @Squeglee Yeah, pretty much this.

The album is an account of how humans are bringing on the sixth extinction.

Each song is a reflection of a stage -- as you said.

I like the fact that the song titles act as the setup and the music itself layers on the emotions that the stage represents. Never before have I seen a band do this. Very cool stuff.

  • @AstronautJ Great, thanks for your reply. Still, I don't understand why would it be the "sixth" extinction

  • @Squeglee There have been five mass extinctions in Earth's history, where the greater majority of it's inhabitants died off. The ice-age is one such extinction.

It is thought by some that we are currently entering another mass extinction period. They claim that many species are vanishing of late and that humanity's ever increasing expansion will soon result in either an ice-age, a flooded planet, both, or that we will simply run out of food - depends who you ask.

  • @AstronautJ Thanks a lot for the explanation. I'm seeing them tonight, by the way ;)

  • @AstronautJ Even if there is another ice-age there is one characteristic about humans that increases our chances to survive above almost all other animals -- our adaptability. Sure, a mass-extinction would reduce our numbers and make most of humanity live in misery, but it probably wouldn't kill us. If the composition of the atomosphere changes, we go underground. If the sun is blocked, we find a way to help plants photosynthesize with greater ease. Cold isn't a problem either.

  • @pacifiedfools Humans are very bad at adapting. We change our environment to suit us, not the other way around.

Also, you missed an important part of how mass extinctions work: the food chain. Sun gets blocked out? Water is darker and receives less UV, wiping out entire ecosystems. Grass doesn't grow, livestock dies. Trees don't produce oxygen, we all die. Etc., etc.

It's not as easy as 'just find a different way'. Your disposition is nice, but sorely inaccurate.

  • @AstronautJ Humans are the most adaptive species on the planet, dude. We have adapted to the enviornment: 1) sickle cell anemia in africa to circumvent malaria 2) wet vs. dry earwax depending on moisture level of enviornment 3) lactose catabolism evolved independently twice during agricultural revolution as nutrition source

The greatest mass extinction ever wiped out 95% of land dwelling animals. I'm pretty sureour mental capacities would enable us to be in that 5%.

  • @pacifiedfools Agree to disagree, I guess. Don't think either of us will budge and having a proper debate over the net is pretty hard, lol.

  • @Squeglee The entire album is about the Great Leap Forward, so the landscape is transforming from rural villages to urbanization and industrialization. Now, they are the world's sweatshop just like America was in the 1900's, and so America will become again if the free market continues its pillaging of laborers.

  • @Turtleproof

This album is about the sixth extinction. Their second album is about The Great Leap Forward campaign in China that brought genocide to the sparrow population, ultimately causing The Great Chinese Famine.

  • That was okay, the bird noises were a bit of a cheap gimmick and didn't really add anything to the music. If you like this, I suggest you check out Russian Circles, I think they do something that's very similar, but more proficiently :D

  • @Olivarus I definitely disagree. Birds make amazing music, and Red Sparowes is amazing. I love Russian Circles, too, but I give a slight edge to Red Sparowes (though they are different musical styles, really).

  • they were amazing live

  • i'm sad and in the other hand i'm happy that more ppl don't listen to post rock cause it's still pure music with out the BS!!!

  • Red Sparowes in England in October .Can`t wait . Iv`e seen them three times ,once at The Roadburn festival in Holland . Just amazing .

  • Post rock can be boring sometimes, but Red Sparowes have a very special and beautiful sound.Good for them:)

  • this is the soundtrack of my life :)

  • Amazing song! This is one of my favorites from them.

  • wwwooooooooooo

  • I fucking love this band!!!!

  • I just stumbled across them tonight looking for music for a project and I have to say they are.. I don't know the words because awesome is just the gist of it

  • @dvilified People can't understand the music without it? Either they need to make the lyrics less obscure, or you people are just stupid. How is it that I can understand songs by any other band but with these guys? Oh, I need a paragraph long title to fully interpret the true message of it!

  • no ensemble, band, artist, or otherwise will ever make pedal guitar sound as awesome as that.

  • So, without them, you would still be able to tell what stage of the sixth extinction each song is describing?

And it is referred to as 'Alone and Unaware' in casual conversation.

  • They tell the albums story; without them, most people would have difficulty deciphering the music.

  • @parrish72 To me song names and band names dont mean anything. It's the music what matters the most.

  • @Pete134245

That's a pretty ignorant blanket statement. You've got every right to not give a shit about the song and band names... but since the bands go through the trouble of giving a title to their work it means they intend for the music to be speculated under the circumstances built around the names given.

To ignore it means that you're ignoring part of the work. If they didn't want to name a track they could have easily left it unnamed and given it just a number.

  • Great song, amazing guitar in 0:50 - 1:40

  • @speedrw calming :)
