My brother and I sang this together as I drove him to a rehab clinic so that he could beat his meth addiction and get his life back together. 2 years and we never knew, it all makes so uch evil sense in hindsight.
I can't wait to rub my eyes when he returns, I have lost my brother for too long now. He has a fierce determination to beat this.
I've written & recorded about 40 tracks, I listen to this & just think, why am I bothering ? This is so far beyond my comprehension as a 'song writer'........I hate Pearl Jam hah hah
I have been a die hard Pearl Jam fan since back in 1990. I have loved everysong that they have put out. No band reaches me the way they do. The song is awesome! Love the video concept too.
When I used to be a die-hard fan of pearl jam No Code was my least favourite album (back then they only had until binaural) but now, that I really don't listen to them that much, this is by far my favourite one!
So my friend just lent me a few Pearl Jam CD's to upload to iTunes. The other day I was driving to school and I had my iPod on shuffle when this song came on. I hadn't heard it before but as soon as it kicked in something clicked in my mind, so I stopped everything I was doing to see what song it was and just listened to it. It's just an awseome song.
Just want to address some comments here, but the song is not about Jesus, Neil Young, Layne Staley, or the 2011 Japan tsunami. According to Eddie, he wrote it about himself from a third person perspective.
@introspaced I don't see anything particularly American in the song... or any Pearl Jam songs for that matter. Apart from Porch and Ledbetter. Took me a while to work out what you call a Porch, we call an annex, and what we call a porch... you don't really have. Crazy world :)
Poor modern man... always being poked and prodded to run forward, never enough time for himself, no time to reflect or enjoy simplicity when you're a wage slave.
One of the greatest things about Pearl Jam and the lyrics that Eddie sings is that he likes for them to be open to interpretation. People like to mold songs and that's whats great: you can probably listen to this song and picture someone in your own life, or someone who has passed through it.
It is about Eddie being a friend, yes. The friend is Lane Staley and off he goes is referring to Lanes heroin addiction. They reunite and "the strain creep in" is Eddie realizing that he looks good now but he knows Lane is about to shoot up. Sad song but amazing
@TheHilldave64 i always thought it was about himself. how he was changing now because of the new fame. Seeing his c.d. now on the rack. At a 1/4 to TEN is when it all started. Just before the release of their 1st album. Not the person he used to be. but it comes and goes... i don't know
i love pearl jam, vedder is an inspiraton , an each of them too...they all complete the circle made a perfect ...mmm... armony, a perfect...paint...thanks for been in my ears. for cross in my radio stations, for be PEARL JAM. to me the unique---->>>>
@Kapiszczur Yea no problem, i did mean to be a dick bout it either with the all the dots. This album and The Pearl jam album are dedicated to Johnny and the song Come back is for him. Great song if you dont know if check it out.
why do I always sing this song to myself when I hear it? pearl jam (Vedder) is always good at taking you on a mysterious journey through random stories...good shit!
You Nailed it!!!! Like others have said, I've always told people this was the one song I swore was written for me. Agree No Code was very underated....
that song is a real big hit you where it hurts song. sent this to a guy i was seeing who went to america, and consequently never came home again. seems too appropriate now.
This song is just way too beautiful. I am only 16, yet I can relate to this song. Everyone changes. No matter how old you are, you constantly change and I think being able to feel those changes is really priceless. Fantastic job on the video man, I loved your interpretation, I had never thought about it until I saw this. Thank you for making these 5 and a half minutes the best of my day.
Fabulous job on the vid. I do not share your interpretation of this song, but I see it's value.
Being a huge 1) PJ fan 2) The Dark Tower fan, the very first time i heard this song I saw and heard in my minds eye and ear the opening sequence to The Dark Tower if it were to ever be made into film (and it is now). I see it as Jake Chambers (young boy) singing this song about Roland Deschains (main character). And now i want to put Ron Howard and Pearl Jam to work together, please help me! :D
Si vous estimez qu'il faut que ça change, mobilisez-vous et faites en sorte que l'humain retrouve sa vraie dimension ! Ce n'est pas compliqué ... remuez vos méninges et vous trouverez !
I like the interpretation, thanks! I've also thought it's about himself. But like with every Pearl Jam song, there's always more. In the movie in my mind it's also someone else.
Congratulations for this great video that you have made for this fantastic song. I really like your point of view and interpretation of the song. I am studying video and your work give me some inspiration, thanks for sharing this music video. Continue the good work.
hey man great job with the video, loved the camera work and angles. A lot of ambiguity, but the good kind. that unique pearl jam feeling that is very hard to describe, you actually pretty much nailed it by pairing it with this visual story.
Great interpretation of the lyrics, kind of similar to what I think of them when I listen to this song. Best video on youtube about this song until now. Excelente trabajo compadre.
Amazing job with the video. Camera work is fantastic, especially the angle when you are shaving and you see your shadow on the wall also. Very ambiguous, tragic and joyous at different times, but that is to me the essence of Pearl Jam which you captured very well. There are many things in the video that I can relate to, but most of all it was nice to see Pearl Jam's unique mood and feeling put together with someone's visual story in this way.
music is like art, wine, life, everyone sees, feels, tastes, understands it under their owned point of view, and every point of view is valid, as your reality is not the one and only true reality.
just respect other people's opinion, as you want your opinion to be respected.
it's just my opinion with a fair result for either parties.

Not terrible. I just think it's a little amateur. The running could have been done with a little more creativity.(shadows , sihlouettes, close-ups) I dont know, I'm an amateur myself, but I can still see room for improvement.
the thing about bands back then is that the songs werent shallow compared to now, the meaning werent on the surface, it had various interpretations, and rarely did you have people selling their image. songs now need the singers character and image in order for their song to sell. and mostly after five seconds of the song u pretty much know what the whole thing is about and its just one single statement that isnt even worth learning in ur life most likely.
dont you know this song is about jesus ...listen well ...you probally like run lola run and made the video sucks ...sorry men i dont like this video ..i like pearl jam
This song is definitely NOT about Jesus.I don't exactly know what it's about, but I like the creators idea. Eddie Vedder himself even says his songs are open to the listeners interpretation.. That's what is so beautiful about music. I personally as an ex-heroin user think it's about someone drifting in and out of sobriety. Taking too much on. On heroin you'll be there, but you're checked out. He's gone again. But like I said it's open to interpretation.
@pepexx7 its about being friends with an asshole. Actually its written from the perspective of Eddie Vedders frriend. He is actually the one he is singing about.
hey everyone, thank you so much for watching and liking this video - follow me on twitter @freekeir for updates.

Great video Keir!!Where was it shot at?

@ryanlfc87
Ha... You never catch the dragon. In the words of Nikki Sixx, "At first it tastes so sweet, then you wake up next to a monster."
I truly wish I had never touched the stuff. It was the hardest thing I've ever done kicking it & I did two tours in Iraq. Not worth ever starting.

@pepexx7 its about being friends with an asshole. Actually its written from the perspective of Eddie Vedders frriend. He is actually the one he is singing about.
