I am very very sorry for your loss Professor, she sounds like she was a wonderful woman and she obviously influenced you so much. I think many people will now be thankful to her, now that you have told us about her, because you've in turn influenced people youself. Thanks. xxx
im 14 and im sorry to say she died on my birthday so sorry for your loss i cried for 2 weeks when my grandmother died.
i have one of those tube like cynalders and its used to determin the heat of exothermic liquid reactions like NAoh+water and Al well atleast thats what it said when my pop gave it to me
The cylinder with built in thermometer is for taking hydrometer readings, where a correction has to be applied for temperature in order to make an accurate density measurement. This design is still sold today.
I'm fairly sure the glass cylinder with a built in thermometer is meant for a hydrometer - in fact I think I saw a modern version on sale somewhere recently. Since the density reading given by a hydrometer is very temperature sensitive, it is necessary to apply a correction based on the temperature reading.
HERE HERE Martin!!, well done such a lovely video. Iv'e come to know-of you during the years on Youtube and you seam like the nicest and most genuine of people iv'e had the fortune of watching on the internet.
I'm a 48 year old child and professor Poliokoff you have my thanks for making a difference to my life.
You and the team bring science to life in a way my teachers many years ago never did - Seeing you all in action makes me wish I'd have chosen chemistry as an option.
My conolences on your loss, my best wishes for your futue.
That thing: something that measures warming. If you don't understand, if I would put hot water in the containing part, the thermometer would show, how much it heats the thing.
2nd device looks like a type of hydrometer, I use one when making beer. Thank you for your terrific vids, wish I'd seen them when I was younger, might have chosen a different field. I'm sorry for your loss.
You have an important message in which people are not always grateful to those whom have helped them throughout out their life and I am glad that you were able to share your story and remind us that there have been many different people who have had influences on all our lives.
RIP; Perhaps the beaker is for measuring minor Exothermic reactions. Or perhaps a phase change Beaker for measuring the temperature of the melting point of ice in experiments.
Maybe the second piece of glassware was a calorimeter. Used to find the specific heat of a substance among other things. The only thing is that calorimeters should be made out of something that insulates better than glass does.
And so, Professor, because we love you and because we are so grateful for the wonderful way you teach, we then are also most especially grateful for Linda and the strength she shared with you so that you could be who we love. Thank you Professor, for sharing this treasure. You have made us all, infinitely rich.
A hygrometer works like a float. If anything it is not a hygrometer, but an apparatus that one would place the hygrometer in to measure specific gravity of the liquid.
I think the glass is a Hydrometer vessel. Temperaure is important when trying to make accurate readings. Prof. Dr. Y. Y James Wu taught me to always pay attention to details. For the record, I've never seen anything like it before.
My mother passed way 6 yrs ago today. I appreciate all you and your faculty do. I'm lighting a candle also. Please continue with the Youtube videos. R.I.P Carline and R.I.P. Linda. You are missed....
That strange piece of glassware....could it be a rudimentary tool to measure the density of a material?.
You would put some water in the cylinder, mark the level, introduce the material and measure the increase in volume. The thermometer on the side would give a way to calibrate for variation in ambient temperature.
Yes, I know about death and loss, just within this last year I have lost 3 very dear friends. Please accept my very sincere condolences to you and your family and remember that there are many who hold you close to their hearts we grieve with you. From what you said about Linda she must have been a very wonderful and special human being.
Is the vessel perhaps simply a thermometer using a liquid as a means to stabilize the temperature of the measuring device in it? Sort of a temperature buffer. I've seen similar in refrigerators (only smaller).
We are always products of our heritage. If our heritage has been supportive we can draw strength from what was bestowed on us; if it was less then ideally supportive, we can draw strength from the idea that we can BEGIN a supportive tradition for our children and beyond.
What passes between the generations is very important, and it's a bit sad that western society gives less emphasis to it than to eastern societies traditionally have.
Very touching. I did tear up. I know exactly what you mean. Whilst growing up, while my parents worked, I was taken care of by my next door neighbor. She also passed away recently at the age of 95. Sweetest lady in the world. I just wish I could have seen her one more time before she passed.
Awe. Although we are composed of elements, we are shaped by the people that cared for us.

I don't remember the technical term, but the tall glass tube looks like a device for measuring the specific gravity of a liquid.
Fill it with the test liquid and float a ruler of known uniform density, the amount submerged tells you displacement -> density of the liquid.
My family used such a device when we needed to find the sugar content of fermenting wine.
