That door they went through into the bomb bay didn't actually exist on the working B-29. The crew's only way to the rear of the plane was through that tunnel - which was very long as it stretched all the way across the bomb bay.
I work on the B-29 at Castle Air Museum, it's pretty small when your working inside of it for a long period of time, but compared to the B-25, it's a giant!
I got to go in Fifi, too. Ditto the size comment. You expect this huge plane. It isn't. It makes sense when you think of it. It was compact & efficient. They didn't let us go back to the rear gunnery stations. I got to fly in Colling's B17G. I'd love to fly in Fifi someday.
I had a chance to climb aboard an airworthy B-29 ("FIFI"); and I'll tell y'all what: as big as it is, it's a crampy ship to roam through; for the guys in the copit/bombardier compartment to bail out during a fallen ship, they would have to crawl back to the rear through that long tunnel to get to a better exit!...
Bailing out through a glass window from the nose could get you chopped up into a human hamburger!!!
They did have access through pressurized doors from the cabins to the bomb bays. Of course they aren't like the tour doors, but there are doors there.
@ftucyk my grandpa and great uncle landed on Omaha beach and by gods grace survived and i took a trip to France this summer and saw Ohmaha beach i balled my eyes out to think what those men went through. God bless you too man.
Its funny cuse I get to see the lancaster Bomber fly (1 of only 2 still flying) and i wish i could be inside it Just to see what it is like Here you get the chance,,, still look better flying though
I don't know if it will be flying in 2009 (think they are doing engine repairs) but if you wait to check the 2009 schedule, you might time your visit for B-29 "FiFi", the only flying B-29 left in the world.
That is good to know Metallica. Would be great if they could get a few more touring the country. It has been 8 years since "FiFi" toured near my town.
Awesome plane.
My dad loved the B-29.

I just saw the only one that still flies last weekend! It took off, and took some people up for tours. That made a great video, which I have posted.

If that was a real 29 its been modified horribly there isn't supposed to be an opening to the bomb bay it had a pressurized cabin!
Pyromaster365 2 years ago
If you look above the opening to the bomb-bay, you can see a tunnel with a sign above it stating that it's a 'Crew Tunnel'.
The opening to the bomb-bay is just there because it's a tour.

B-29 was a air monster to Japanese and B-17 was air monster to Nazi.
Where is this location, I really want to visit if I have a chance to US.

Some B-29's are flightworthy but are not classed as such because they're on static display and don't fly.
