Does anyone know why it took so long for cd players to become standard equipment in vehicles? Cds were introduced in the early 80s but most cars didn't have cd players until the mid to late 90s.

@JJ9715 There are many answers to this. Back in the 80s most cars only had a single slot for the audio (or single DIN as the standard later became), which meant there was no space for both a cassette and CD slot. It was one or the other. Also, back in the 80s CD players were still relatively expensive to make (especially such a small size such as a car stereo). Later, in the 90s, some car makers may have held off making the player standard, so that they could charge extra for the option.
