The mix of air and fuel going into the cylinders do have to do with the sound of the engine, it's called induction noise. However, the noise the burned mix do while exiting the car is also an important part of a car's engine note. It's the exhaust noise.
The fact an engine sounds so linear and controlled, nowadays, has more to do with electronics, as the combustion timing is controlled by the car's electronic brain, the ECU - Engine Control Unit. ;)
I can only believe the experts who tested all of this cars since I am not in a position to do that myself... Yes, Fox is a hopeless car, that is true, but it was made for the Brazilian market, as a cheap model(but it's not even cheap)...
Check out the mileage on the Polo you were testing... I think it is around 13300 KM, right? Whit that low mileage the engine doesn't give it's full performances, since it is still new and not in shape... Try the same thing at 100000 KM, it would be much faster.
Yes, this Polo was around 1 year old and 13.3k km when I drove it. So yes, with more use it would be a bit faster and more economical. And that's the thing: a bit.
It's so slow that, for any difference to be felt, performance would have to rise 30%, at least. And not even with 100k km you would get that, well, as long as it would not break down before (a friend's Polo 1.2 has 75k km and the engine is dying...).
Also, as a rental car, I'm sure it would have been properly run! XD
@cfmatias the Polo 1.2 55hp in slower. And the Fabia with these engines is even heavier,so slower. And there are even slower cars so do not worry man ;)
@ObrenNBG wouldnt it rather be the other way around? a new engine usually has a better performance than an old one... an engine in fact loses power over time because the components inside the engine start to wear causing more friction etc etc etc
@patrickkroell No friend... The engine forms its self during exploitation, because all vital mechanical parts "go into their place". That means the pistons polish their way through the cylinders, all the bearings on the camshaft and the crankshaft become smooth and easy to rotate. That is why there is a period(about 1500 km, depending on the engine) when you must not force it, so it could elaborate it self...
Eventually, the engine starts to loose its power, but that happens after a long time.
i appreciate the bluntness. Well my budget is £1500. Engine can be an absolute maximum of 1.4, i want a hatchback that is as safe as possible - crash test videos of most old cars don't fill me with confidence :-/ Image isn't important.
I can't see the point of buying a car only with crash test results in mind. Unless you are 100% sure you're gonna have a crash, there are other much more important aspects, varying with what you expect from it. I suppose you want a work horse; so, economy and reliability are priorities. I can tell you, from VERY close experience (2 cases), reliability is poor on this Polo.
Look at the latest Suzuki Swift, Fiat Panda, Honda Jazz, Citroen C1. All are better cars all-round.
i don't just want good crash test results, but i've been in 2 near crashes (not my fault) and want the peace of mind. plus i'm a new driver so i'm more likely than most to crash.
yup economy (including car insurance quotes), reliability and safety are what i'm looking for.
i'll look at the cars you suggest, cheers for the advice
I have a VW Polo 1.2 '09 51KW, from my company... This is my third polo, before I hade the same one like this, and the first one was a 1.4 '08... And I can say that I am very satisfied with it... Nice engine, quality interior, good fuel economy, nice performances for its power/weigt ratio... A car that I could reccommend for any one...
On the other hand, there are a lot of other good models that are in his class... Tastes are different...
But, a PANDA is not even a car, compared to Polo...
@ObrenNBG Please mate, don't make me laugh! That’s prejudice talking for you. The Panda’s product image is way worse than the Polo’s, and that’s about the only good thing on the German side. OK, the Polo is bigger as well.
The Diesel Panda is way faster and more economical, materials and built construction are at the same level and it’s more reliable.
On the other hand, both the Suzuki Swift and Honda Jazz (direct competitors of the Polo, unlike the Panda) are way better allrounders.
I am not a car specialist, I am just a big fan... I never saw a test where Polo did not achieve a GREAT result in a his class... It maybe boring, unattractive, but being balanced is the Polo's biggest plus! He was always a criteria of quality in his class, face it... Polo offers everything in balance, it is a car for every one... Like every Volkswagen, like every German car... If Germans stop making cars, the world would not have anything to drive...
One more thing... The diesel Panda has a 1.3 litre DOHC with 75 HP, and it goes 13,0 to 100 km/h and the top speed is 164 km/h...
The only slower Polo is the 1.4 TDI SOHC with 70 HP, and it goes 14.6 to 100, and it has the same top speed 164 km/h...
All other diesel versions of the turbo diesel polo are way faster than the top Panda diesel...
I am just trying to be objective here, i would drive a Polo, or a Jazz, or a Swift, or a Fiesta, even a Panda, but Polo stays in the top of the class...
as I said, the Panda is not even a competitor of this Polo, VW's rival is the hopeless Fox, search for a comparison between that and the Panda. There goes away your theory that everything but German is hopeless.
Some time ago I rented a Lancia Ypsilon 1.2 60PS, and even that felt faster than this Polo, despite what the official figures might suggest. It's a far better car, with real quality, the downside being its looks.
This is even slower than the Matiz

I may try this with my own Polo 1.2-...maybe the 55 will beat the 20 sek mark :D

Hey fuckers :D
ok I just bought a car, and I really don't have too much knowledge yet..

I have one of these as a courtesy car. I dropped off a 320bhp Impreza and got this :(
TBH it's a 10-plate and it's comfortable - and it's really good for what it was designed for. Plus it sounds quite nice :)

lol i'm 20 in the UK and this is the best car i can afford :-/
gotta hate boy racers for pushing the insurance premiums up!

I am sorry, but it is NOT the best car you can afford.
It is the best car you can afford with a "premium" badge. However, this car is everything but premium.
My '05 Fiat Panda Multijet is miles more impressive, and was about the same price as this crap...
Greetings! ;)
