  • What's the hardest time signature? "4/4." <---Jens Kidman

  • You would get an A if I was teaching, just for playing meshuggah, also for the power point.

  • FUCKING LOVE THIS

  • Hello. Is it possible to get .ppt or just better video quality? like, re-record it in HD. It's marvellous presentation, i just want to have it in better quality. Thank you

  • It seemed Like a good explanation, but i still didnt get it! could you do one like for dummies? that would be awesome!

  • Possibly the best 4 min Powerpoint presentation ever!

  • How long does it take to finish analysing this song??

  • Polymeter? Why is this about air-temperature?^^

You were going for Polymetric, right?

    ;)

  • @jermakki nope, a polymeter is correct

  • Who else saw the thumbnail of this video and immediately thought "Pacman"?

  • Kudos for bringing this into academia - I love that these guys are appreciated by regular head bangers and scholars alike! LOL, we're all just regular head bangers on the inside LOL!!

  • This. Fucking. Owns.

  • Excellent work, man. I assume you are at a Master's level, or greater? Would enjoy hearing how you did this? With a computer, or first by ear???

  • Mind = WTF Happened ?

Nice writeup, this should be the official music video ! :D

  • mind=blown

  • Congratulations! Man, i am stucked. Very interesting. You did great job. :)

  • The 29 seconds used for lyrics could have been spread out amongst the slides to make them longer and easier to read without having to pause every five seconds.

But, I do realize you had a time limit, and you did a good job in keeping with in it. Nice video, too. Though all of this is Greek to my fifteen year old mind. XD I would love to be able to understand beats and time signatures in music. </3

  • This is intrinsically worked out, and I abolutely love it.

Congrats on all that hard work! I wish I coulda been there when you showed it.

  • Plus even if it was only two notes like you've interpreted it (2-1--2-1--...) your graph is still wrong.

  • @Shmlegshmlin

"The four beat truncation matches the cymbal - thus we see two of the same pronunciations in a row"

I'm sorry to tell you the riff is not just two notes and thus the two first bars are not the same. Here's the whole thing (4 bars)

    201-0201-0201020

    1-0201-0201-0201

    0201-0201-0201-0

    2010201-0201-020

  • I didn't like having to pause so much. Slow it down, bro.

  • How awesome could be if math classes in school were this way

  • Wow finally someone who understands Meshuggah properly!

  • i believe you got an a on this one. YOU DID, RIGHT!?

  • that must have been some class project. awesome stuff man!

  • THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!

  • Bravo.

  • @crazyboyxx Using a colon (to the best of my knowledge) is actually eluding to a polyrhythm. I believe if you are explaining polymeter, you need to distinguish the meters that are overlapping, as in 4/4 and 11/16 polymeter, or a 5:4 polyrhythm, wherein two different parts are playing. One plays 5 beats, one 4, both in the same amount of time simultaneously.

  • this video made this song better :D

  • Great video. Very educative! Since im a drummer myself, this is very useful. Thanks!

  • i think im having a seizure...and yes....my cock just exploded

  • huzzah! outstanding effort.

  • Mathematics turned AWESOME

  • @Guitarscreech06 Finally, math is FUN!!

  • Wow, this is unbelievable. I bet you probably got an A+. For those who still think metal fans are stupid, this 'll prove you wrong. :p

  • I'll pretend I understoond anything of this analysis lol...

I was ok until 0:10 lol!!!!!

yet; I guess, great job lol?

  • jesus tittie fucking christ dude

thats insane to even think about

    damn good job

  • Great analysis. I was trying to make a point to a friend why Bleed was such a rediculous song, without having a good base of knowledge. Now that I sort of know what polyrhythm is, I won't make myself sound like an ass next time. By the way, what kind of grade did you get?

  • I can't red it easily, but I'm agree with you, this is one of the best songs ever.

  • great job

  • Gook work, this is the best Mesh song. Especially the bit like 2 mins in.

  • that just like wrecks your brain trying to read all the details while listening to it at the same time.

I love it, +5* for you xD.

  • This is the best academic analysis ever. You win at life.

  • i love you

  • what songs did your classmates present?

    awesome stuff!!

  • I hate to break it to you, because I respect you for the amount of work you put in this project (and it looks very nice), but Meshuggah take it far less seriously as you might think. They have stated that they don't write any of their work out. It's much more based on feel than math. For example, Marten comes up with a few riffs, Tomas comes up with a matching drumbeat (which coincidentally may be polyrhythmic), and they add extra notes if their groove doesn't match within a 8/16/32/64 schedule.

  • Don't get me wrong, I completely agree with you. I've seen as many interviews as you have. I didn't mean to imply that they did all this shit consciously. I doubt that they're even aware of some of the really obscure things I pointed out here. It's true that they just feel this shit out, which makes it all the more amazing. They have incredible intuition! MESHUGGAHHH

  • In the words of Jens Kidman: REEE-AAAA-LAAAA-TYYYYY!

Seriously. Ants don't understand the science of the hill they're building, but it's there for the describing.

Meshuggah understands this stuff, but they don't set out with a calculator when they write. This is reality, this is what is happening in the music. Irrespective of their initial approach.

  • which is why haake is so modest about it...

  • @theSyringe

The drummer likes his polyrythm. The guitarist and bass feed off of it. The singing puts you in the center of it all, sometimes the lyrics make you feel like the character they portray. These guys are incredibly intelligent. "They didn't try"; no surprise here. Meshuggah is obviously passionate about redifining the disposition in metal music. They are the most important 21st century music because of their musical breakthroughs and amazing lyrics.

  • @burgermikestir Exactly. We agree, right?

  • @theSyringe We do agree! I enjoy expanding a conversation!

  • O_o WOW...

  • hehe :D

  • this shts sick mang

  • Very good job, although it was a lot information to cram into 4 minutes. This would make a great half hour project or something.

  • My mind has officially melted....

  • lol same

  • Merci beaucoup !

  • I just don't see how you can ask for a student to select "the best rock song ever" but make it be 4 minutes or less. You totally slapped them across the face with Mouth Licking.

  • wow.

  • You probably destroyed everyone else in the class on this project. \m/

  • holy balls im so high

    what did i even watch

what is this i dont even

    wat

  • yes! these should exist for every meshuggah song!

  • yes

  • This is awsome. This makes my science powerpoints seem really lame.

  • Shmlegshmlin said to me about 3 years ago, "If you threw all the songs in the world into a free for all deathmatch, this song would emerge as the last one standing" (paraphrased). After having witnessed this live at the House Of Blues in Hollywood two days ago, I can say that I agree with him. The lyrics are as great as the music - outstanding.

  • To anyone watching this I suggest adding: &fmt=18

to the end of the URL to watch it with better quality. Also this video is great, It would have taken me like a year to understand the drums.

  • WOW! thank for the tip, man. that does make this 50 times more intelligible.

  • i love how it's way too fast to read.. emphasizes the ownage of this music.

    ...EYES!!!! lol

  • shit that was damn cool!

  • that was pretty cool.

  • man how did oyu figure al lthis out?

  • That's such an awesome fucking project man. Good job!

  • I bet the class was like WTF? haha FTW!
