the sad story of ebenezer since 1850 has been exaserbated by world wars fueled by greed and selfishness unspeakable evil that is now engulfing the world we yet live in. we may be lucky to celebrate christmas if we are not homeless. there is great reason to fear as the powers of this world intend on carrying out their evil agenda: depopulation, economic collapse, wars, etc until they have thoroughly raped and plunder the planet and then annihilate it.
One of my favorite parts of this movie (and the book of course) is that when Scrooge gives, it doesn't tell how much money he gives. The main focus is that he *gives*, not expecting anything back. Makes me cry every time. lol
Thanks for posting the best scrooge movie, I'm a graduate theologian student and am as poor (tuition, living, BOOKS!) as scrooge is rich...so thanks again. love watching Scott in this.
Scrooge speaks out against squandering his money, yet as Fred says, he doesn't even spend it on himself. I wonder how the tone of the story would have been different had Scrooge been someone who did spend money on himself, lived a lavish lifestyle, yet refused to help others. As it is, he seems like someone afraid to be poor, hanging onto every penny he makes.
@Iluthra ////I wonder how the tone of the story would have been different had Scrooge been someone who did spend money on himself, lived a lavish lifestyle, yet refused to help others.////
Dickens use of the number three strengthens the story. 3 sorrows of Scrooge (father's abandonment, death of his sister, loss of his lover), 3 spirits (past, present, future), 3 acts of atonement (Crachet's turkey, donating money to the poor, reconciliation with his nephew), and 3 wishes/reasons (ask for forgiveness from his nephew, to meet his nephews wife, attend the dinner). It was a beautiful way to structure writing that would not work today. Sadly, it has gone the way of lyrical poetry.
George C. Scott isn't even English, but his comes across as the most realistic portrayal of Scrooge - not really hateful or bitter, but simply worn down by life. We meet people like that every day...some of us in the mirror.
@SCE2AUX I agree completely. This is the greatest version of A Christmas Carol ever. Patrick Stewart did an incredible job but NOBODY beats George C. Scott as Scrooge.
thank you, thank you for this movie. been trying to purchase this dvd. when i find it i cannot afford it. i am kinda poor. i cannot afford it above $5 each. i offset it with buying bread or electric bills. i pray for this poor, spirit barren world. its going to come to a real bad end. I have Jesus. The word of GOD fills me up fuller than bread. Food doesn't matter. I want to be part of the solution not part of the problem. Sorry if I have offended anyone. That was not my intent. GOD Bless all.
