  • Does anyone know why he was called the 'Unready'? What was it that happened in his time to give him that name?

  • What is the cake made of, paste!?

  • Man... that little hamster at the end is EVIL

  • @Nadesiko85 It's a rat.

  • Fair enough, I did nick that horse!

Are there any ordeals that are less... impossible?

    Awesome!

  • I'd choke on a cake because it's so ridiculous XD

  • Ted the evillllll

  • How did they manage to choke on the cake? Was it loaded with cinnamon or something?

  • Hmm, seems legit. Haha! I Love Horrible Histories! <3

  • @writingsinthesky um... Smashing is used to describe the saxons, it's British slang like America's "cool" it doesn't mean that they're hating and putting them down.

  • @writingsinthesky, what on earth are you blabbering on about?

  • I am just about tired of people "smashing saxons" - when that means Scandinavians. What are these folks afraid of? That they have an underbite -- and Saxons do not?

  • I ate cake today and I didn't choke. I'm innocent!

  • What exactly made saxons think ducking, hot rod or cake was a way of proving innocence?

  • @cartoonlover2326 The thought was that God would spare someone who was innocent. They weren't the only ones either. The water ordeal was also used by the ancient Babylonians.

  • @gangurobitch And for women accused of being witches.

  • The cake is a lie!

  • Woah! What did the Saxons put in those cakes?

  • Fair enough, I really did take that horse.

  • sessoion

  • Love The Rat! Legend!

  • ok but icould have doen better]

  • "Aethelred, the Unready. Lawmaker, and largely useless English King."

    "UM--!"

    xD

  • Lol!

  • Mmmmmmm, cake--and stealing.

  • Comment removed

  • lul i saw this at school

  • I don't get it. How did he choke by cake?! I thoght that it is pretty easy ordeal...

Can someone explain that to me???

  • @Sexybitchinuniforme

He choked on the cake quite easily, I imagine.

Their "cake" was this super dry thing. And you had no water to wash it down with.

As you can imagine, it's less pleasant than it first sounds. :P

  • The cake is a lie.

    ...

    ...

    ...

    Had to be done!

  • anyone got the link to the aethelred clip from series 3? :) x

  • Looks like this was filmed in the London Dungeons?

  • He probably choked just because he believed in the whole ordeal thing as much as everyone else did.

  • It's funny to think what they did so many years ago; but alas, no more ordeal by cake...

  • this was the first thing i ever seen when i first found this show, and i'm happy to know of this awesome show's exsitence. ^-^

  • OK, then. . . , Ted.

  • 8 people were unready.

  • Ordeal by cake was only available for the clergy. Laypeople only got either ordeal by iron or ordeal by water.

  • i think it is terrific that the writing does not dumb down the language or humor for children. it seems as though written for anyone, including adults, though with a flair of childrens' history show instead of a nuclear explosion of it.

  • 7 people have had ordeal by cake happened to them

  • love the rat's evil laugh haha

  • lol :P dumb video

  • My mom and I looked up Earl Harold Godwin, we found him in our family tree, and apparently he chose "ordeal by cake" after he was accused of murdering Alfred son of Ethelred the Unready. (You know, it's really disturbing when you find out about your ancestors like this)

  • @redbayly that is actually pretty awesome

  • Lawrence Rickard ( I think that's his name) looks a little like Guy Martin, I don't know how I didn't notice it before.

  • piece of cake! that easy

  • "The accused....TED! "

    xD

  • It was king cake and he choked on the plastic babay!

  • my mom discovered just today that she's descended from Ethelred the Unready, as well as King Harold the Saxon.

  • MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

  • there's always someone on the comments of HH videos that says it's wrong and blah blah blah! ok... you are telling us what you think on a youtube video...they are telling us what they know through comedy, entertainment, books and TV. I know who i'm gonna listen to.

  • " Ye , made it myself " :B

  • I choke on anything that touches the back of my throat :L I would choke the cake up on his head , HA!

  • @TheTigersWhiskers

    *coughs awkwardly at this comment*

  • ha ha soo funny Horible histories is soo funny so are the boocks

  • the cake is a lie!

  • Knowing me i'd choke on the cake :/

  • pancake power

  • So many problems with this sketch! Funny! But so many problems. Aethelraed Unraed! Not unready! It means ill counselled! And as for Earl Harold Godwin dying by this ordeal, the makers were aware that there was only one Harold Godwin and he died in 1066 at HASTINGS? Perhaps they were referring to his father Earl Godwin who most likely died of a stroke, and even the reports stating that he died by bread never say it was an "ordeal". I like HH but they need to fact check better.

  • @ariaelwen no it was harold godwinson was the one who died in 1066 so hahahahaahahahhahaaaaaaaa

  • I was reading the Wise Woman by Philippa Gregory earlier today, and it told of the ordeal by cake in Chapter 9 to see whether the protagonist was a witch or not. Then I watch this!

  • If that chocking was not legend then the cake was very special one...

  • Ordeal by Chocolate cake happens to each of us every year

  • yah.. really not. (the ordeal by cake thing)... the other ordeals where available..but they skipped compurgation which was the primary method of a saxon court. the other term would be 'oath helpers'... you swore you were innoncent, and as a free man of a certain standing if a certain number of other free men were willing to swear you were innocent.. you were. to make the accusation ALSO required oath helpers so if you didnt have friends you were pretty much screwed in either diretion.

  • he said "yeah, made it myself "

  • What was the King saying at 3:10 ? "Yeah, made of ___"

  • @icanseethefuture I think he said "Ye, made it myself".

  • Rebel sword: everything you said was false aside from that they were invited to britania by the natives.

  • go saxons go!!!!

  • The cake was poisoned

  • I'll take the cake, and this rat dude, he's cool xD

  • Are the any ordeals that are less...impossible?

  • Who were the anglo-saxons again?

  • @greenq618 the saxons were a tribe of norse who broke away from the danish vikings and migrated to germania, they became the best warriors in the north and were hired by romans as mercenaries....they were invited to briton by the celts who were left defenceless by the romans that went home, the saxons had a prophecy about having their own country that will spout out to the four corners of the world...the saxons mixed with celts and vikings/normans and created us the english.

  • cake realt

  • hehe. While this joke is pretty funny, the thing people always forget about dunking is that they would tie a rope around your waist. If you didn't come up within ten seconds they'd pull you out.

Just, to keep from floating you'd have to exhale and resist the urge to push off the bottom for ten seconds.

  • i'd choose cake... at least I'd be eating cake whilst dying. 8D

  • INTENTIONAL NAUGHTINESS.

  • And the accused........Ted Haha funny

  • the cake is a spy!!!!!

  • cool

  • what was the cake made of ? why would you choke on it ?!!

  • @welshysheep They put horrible stuff in it, so you choke on it because it taste's so bad, it's the whole point

  • @Prettysureitsdead

haha oh ye thats pretty obviouse thinking about it!duh ! there wouldnt be much point in it tasting really nice haha

  • @welshysheep yeahhh lol its coool man (:

  • This was filmed at the london dungeon, right? I sorta remember it...

  • @SilentMissLoud Indeed it is! :)

  • with meanly and intentional naughtyness! lol

  • As Izzard once said "Cake or death"?

  • Intential naughtieness... lol

  • CAKE OF DOOM!

  • RATTY!!!!

  • so then Ted

  • *Chokes*

    Guilty! Guilty!

Fair enough. I did steal the horse. xDDD

  • Ethelred the Unready!

    ...

    Sorry, sorry, wasn't ready.

Ethelred the Unready, lawmaker and largely useless English king

    UM!-

  • That cake is soo fixed!

  • Cake and Matthew Baynton? In a Joey Tribiani "Put your hands together" kind of thing ;)

  • @sminchin Matthew <3 ^^ i love this show =D makes you wanna learn history (and that's really not my favorite thing xD)

  • would you rather have cake or go out with Matthew Baynton

  • @glamorpuss300 if matthew Bayton is the one that plays ethelred, thne I'll go with him. If not... I'll stick with the cake... lol.

  • IS this were "The cake is a lie" quote came from?

  • The cake is a lie.

"Fair enough, i did steal that horse!"

    *CHOKE*

    *dead* XD

  • i wish we had ordeal by cake. oh great now i want cake

  • funyy

  • This is a quick question.

Up this coment if you would choose the cake, down if you would choose the ducking.

  • I love the eyebrow lift at 0:51 when the king says Ted. "I put it to you that on the night of the 3rd of July, you did meanly and with intesinal naughtiness steal (breath) a (breath) horse." LOL so funny. My spelling= crap

  • Thats wasn't filmed in the London Dungeons was it?

  • Help,Ratty's chocking!

  • wooooooooooooohooooooooooooooooo

    plz watch my vids

  • fuckink funny

  • This is in London Dungeon again I think

  • That's one sadistic puppet

  • @ 1:11 he's Deano off Gavin and Stacey :)

  • must have been dry cake

  • @mermaidstars123123

Dry mouth actually. That ordeal had some validity, as a guilty man lying usually is beset by a lack of saliva.

Of course, stress from being interrogated can do that too, but less likely.

Pacific Islander and South-East Asian tribes, for instance, have ordeals where a man chew on some grains of rice and then spits them out. If dry - guilty. If moist, then the target is innocent. Same principle.

  • so love it when he says naughtiness <3

  • Unready is a mistranslation! Argh!

  • @sarahjude Yes yes we know. Take it easy history nerd!

    Your counsel is poorly.

  • @sarahjude Yes. Should be "Æthelred the ill-advised."

  • I plead absolute amazement to this show!

  • But how did he choke he was jsut eating a slice of bloody cake!

  • He was guilty, of course!

  • @h3lblad3

    lol!

  • horrible histories always reminds me of monty python, which is amazing because nothing else recent has come close to it.....

  • And now for something completely different :D

  • how old was the cake? that could have done it.

  • There are over 10 harolds godwins the one we all know who fought William at the Battle of Hasting ( which atuly took place at senlac hill near the town of battle ) So as i said there were many many Harold Godwins

  • Who is Harold Godwin mentioned at 3.30? Typical incompetent BBC trying to re-write history and getting it wrong as usual. The cakes were literally rock hard sometimes years old and were used as an alternative to a pebble or a stone. Godwin earl of Wessex actually died of a stroke in 1053.

  • CAKE OR DEATH

  • ill have the chicken, please :P

  • @xsqueefluffx sorry i meant a thumbs up

  • @xsqueefluffx OMG I THOUGH THAT TOO! <3

  • @xsqueefluffx THE CAKE IS A LIE

  • Matthew Baynton RULEZ !! :D

  • GUILTY!!!!!

  • You got her too huh..

    lol

  • At least this is more funny and easier to understand than your textbook or her BORING lessons.

    Cheerz from Singapore :)

  • couldn't agree with you more

    Xs from sg!

  • screw the saxons up with the picts >:D

  • in saxon times they have many silly ways to find out you are guilty of a crime... if you are Guilty of a crime they would mark you on your forhead to worm people to avoid you and cut you ears and hands off (find the story of the three bears the saxon version).

  • I Thought theyd give him a metal cake to eat :))) XD

  • CAKE OR DEATH???

Lols I thought they would wheel in a huge cake for him to eat.

  • lol he says session se ss ion :)

  • they must have put something in the cake otherwise it would be like impossible

  • Hahahha the rat! best bit in the flick

  • It Looks Just Like A bit in The York Dungions

  • ahahah xD

it could be more like a monty phyton show xD

  • "Ducking, burning or cake...your choice..."

this is hilarious but not nearly as funny as the POW WWII one....mwahahahahah...

    gnomeys rule!

    and have you seen

harry potter 6 spoof: a gnomey production...you have to!

  • i think i might watch that now :)

  • the draconian law for eating the cake is faithful then, DEATH Guard take him away and make him dead

  • Why do they choke? What's in the cake?

  • worms dirt other gross stuff

  • nothing its just cake, its more likely that you would choke on cake than anything else in those days and thats why they chose it

  • Another theory is that the person would be so desperate to prove their innocence that they'd eat the cake way too fast and end up choking on it :)

  • X|

    They should have mentioned that.

    *bleaugh*

  • Makes me think of "cake or death"

  • Oh right ok...Lol thanks for that :D

  • Did they make the cake easy to choke on becuse I'm sure loads of people could eat cake without choking lol

  • he choked because the king said; "Mad it myself" - guesss Ethelred wasn't much of a cook.

  • He he

  • thats the courthouse from the london dungeon
