And i always though aikijujitsu was old school this art looks to be the most comprehensive and well developed art of true jujitsu. But i don't know because whatching the kodekan hawaiian jiu jitsu vid looks really good but is this stuff the same????
This video was fantastic I hope other martial artists who have vintage videos display them for all of us to enjoy forgot about the critics their opinion is like a bellybutton everyone has one for the real martial artist who enjoyed watching these videos I'm sure eyes before them thank with all sincerity.
Comment: With regard to the comparisons of different schools and / or styles (IMO) it is all the same (all one) with many different names and sets of rules.
this is awesome , I wish I could see the people training hard nowadays. I see several technics that are missing now. We should go back to those old days and ways of training JUjitsu.
@gendaiyawara I don't have to build up Professor Okazaki, His system speaks for itself. as does Judo. And it was the Tenjin Shin'Yo Ryu that Professor Kano was Menkyo Kaiden in NOT Kito Ryu (Get your Facts Straight before coming on here making false statements).
Most of the basic judo boards are a part of Danzan Ryu. The same throws, grappling techniques etc. Judo is a big part of Danzan Ryu training. The main difference is that where judo stops as a sport, the more combative aspects are extended. Weapons such as knives, guns, swords, tessen are a part of Danzan Ryu. It's a great art when transmitted through the proper teacher. There are a lot of lamers out there.
@pcjudosambo Yes! The founder of DZR (Prof. Okazaki) was ranked Sandan in Kodokan By Prof. Kano Himself But this was probably due to Randori victories over Judoka while visiting the Kodokan . Yoshin Ryu is the Base art of DZR, but The founder studied several other Jujutsu ryu as well while on a trip in Japan. He apparently stopped by the Kodokan and was awarded what is called Batsugun (instant promotion) in Judo. At this time this was the highest Rank the Kodokan would give as instant rank.
@jujutsu987 Kano awarded a belt in Judo to the founder of Danzan Jujutsu??? Wow, isn't that a slap in the face? Judo was founded from several Jujutsu schools... it would be like a Army corporal awarding a Marine sergeant an achievement in shooting a rifle straight.
@pcjudosambo But you must understand that Kano was a politician and a very influential figure in Japan..But he'd only studied Jujutsu 5 years before founding the Kodokan. Okazaki on the other hand had studied Jujutsu for at least 12-13 years before founding DZR. Kano Hired many Well established Jujutsu Professors and inheritors of certain Ryu to formulate the Judo Syllabus whereas Okazaki did his own legwork to formulate his Ryu..So Okazaki desrved all the respect he got from Kano & Likewise.
@pcjudosambo I would like to add a further point to this: Batsugun. The term means "exceptional achievement" It was used at the Kodokan for a series of contest wins meaning No technical exam , no waza, no kata, no terminology required. At the Kodokan it used to be given at Kohaku shiai where Contestants lined up from lightest to heaviest. The Winner of each match stays on mat against next challenger in moving from lightest to heaviest. Whoever tossed the most men was awarded the most rank.
I study Koryu and have Aiki and nei jia for my unarmed technique base, although I never practiced Kodenkan/Danzan Ryu,I was always impressed by them.Great video, truly a great art and complete system.
@jukido987 interesting, does Danzan Ryu acknowledge the techniques that are from the different arts that Okazaki learned in Hawaii, such as Lua and Chinese arts?
There was an article in the Spring 1996 edition of Kiai Echo (Which is the newsletter of the American Judo & Jujitsu Federation) called "Getting out of the house" by Bob Reish and in it he details the exact origins of the implementation of Lua techniques in DZR. It could be looked up online as well by simply putting in the title above. Good reading.
this is a great video!!! i own it myself and had it put to dvd to preserve it. jujitsu has been around for hundreds of years. anyone saying they invented anything is a lie. helio himself said "they created a sport out of my art" which is what you see a lot of today. it's all the same and i love all of it. after all if two jujitsu fighters were to face off they would end up on the ground looking to submit each other. the problem with jujitsu is that life is not long enough to learn all of it.
You're right he's alive and kicking, My mistake. but not on the islands of hawaii, but in Seattle Washington. Where he teaches his brand of Aiki JuJutsu called Icho-Ryu, among other things. Bernie Lau is A true pioneer, and well respected Martial Artist all over the world.
hey jukido987, thanks for the info, I know of Lau and few others, I wanted to thank teddywinroth for sharing the footage, I also appreciate that the online "masters" have not muddled this board with negative comments. Good day to ya.
A Famous martial artist by the name of Bernie Lau (now deceased) used to sell the footage you see here in VHS format by mail. he obtained it from original students of Okazaki, namely Professor Juan Gomez who shot the film in 8 milimeter. hard to find now if at all. i have all of them. Bernie Lau narrated the video as well.

And how have we re payed Okazaki...? By turning his system into LARPing.
shenzino 2 months ago
@shenzino Not all DZR schools teach 'LARPing'..but most DZR organizations have strayed far from what Okazaki intended DZR to be.

amazing resemblance with modern jiu jitsu techniques, even the "brazilian" one... who becomes to fade in importance to a more "sport-like" one...
great video, another one to prove that what many may claim to have invented is just a continuation of ancient work...
