  • "Unfortunately the people who died can't hear the song."

  • Is the guy to the far right Donal Logue aka Jimmy the taxi cabbie? I didn't think so until I heard him laugh...

  • @milofire Duh, nvm...I just read the vid info above.

  • IT IS DAVID BLAINE!

  • A brand new video from Quicksand. Quicksand! Wow, how time flies. lol :)

  • the intro is the best thing i evah seen

  • No way that douche doing intro is for real???? Jesus!!!

  • just finished reading The Basketball Diaries today.

  • The Jim Carroll Band rocked Boston. Awesome band.

  • I used to play this song over and over in 1980

  • Wattttt

  • Brilliant junkie skit by Logue. For those "insulted", get a fucking life and try to buy a half a brain. This is too cool for people with the smarts of a bag of nails.

  • 90's Jersey shore !

  • Catholic Boy was considered one of the bes album of the 80's. a must have if you are into kick ass in your face Rock n Roll.

  • Is that a Lupo's T-shirt on Carroll?! RI respect.

  • David Blaine, Lady Gaga and Chris Penn introducing Jim Carroll? Awesome!

  • My advice start it on 1:24! Promise you ,You dont want to see the intro!

  • Let's list one name each of all the cool people who died. Here's my contribution:

    Bill Hicks (1961-1994)

  • Awesome is the only thing you can think of ...R.I.P.--will have a Mass said.

  • is it me but jim carroll is old when singing but fucking sings like he's young

  • for Jim Deacon and Ben Madden RIP Rainbow Records Centrakia

  • so many people have covered that song

  • a new video from quicksand. hmmmmm

  • james hetfield on drums?

  • What an incredible insult to Jim Carroll. what;s next waiting for Patti Smith to die so they can spit on her grave.

What assholes they are. This was MTV? If so I'm glad I never got cable until the Government forced me this year.

Who are these low talented jerks thinking this is a witty way to play a jim Carroll song. I hope they make the list of people who died soon, because after that insult to Jim Carroll they certainly do belong being on the list..

  • the guy from grounded for life?

  • on the left [ do u wanna see some magic]

  • Wow MTV used to play music? That's crazy

  • Cool! If it wasn't for Gorillaz I may have never known about the song or movie may be. I would have been missing out!

  • Jim Carroll never made - unnoticed or otherwise - any records in the late 1970s. His first album is Catholic Boy (including People Who Died, the single) in 1981/82, produced by Keith Richards (uncredited). Until then Carroll was known as the writer of the brilliant Basketball Diaries, a modern classic, Living At The Movies, and other books, the youngest great writer in the US. He did readings, with Patti Smith, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, etc.. in the '70s

  • the intro sucked

  • @17rambler Intro is fucking unbearable

  • Always loved this one.

Hey, this is unrelated to the song, but the guy from the fake, spoof band introducing the video; is that Donal Logue? He always did funny bits on MTV in those days. I liked the "Jimmy the Cab Driver" bits he would do. It didn't take long before stuff like that was the only reason to ever even put MTV on.

  • isnt that david blaine? lol

  • no, it's vin diesel

  • @ihatemyusername2008 yeah man i knew someone else would see that also, i was waiting for him to make something appear

  • If tim armstrong copies anyone, its the singer from the clash. also hes missing teeth.

  • hes also got a bit of shane macgowan in there, too...

  • The world is indeed a sadder place now tha Jim Carroll has, to borrow a line from Pink Floyd, "gone to the great gig in the sky"!

    To: vinnynumbnuts

You're not an ignorant fuck up just because you were unaware of Jim Carrol's unfortunate passing. You just didn't know because maybe no one told ypu. Don't beat yourself up over this.

  • dj roc raida dj am jam master j scott la rock mr magic

  • if your gonna pop it, you might as well shoot it.

  • Tim Armstrong copies this guy, i swear...

    r.i.p

  • I don't think Tim does it on purpose, but they sure as hell sound similar :P Although, Tim has some sort of a speech screw-up, sooo... yeah.

  • yeah i know. i was just thinking that he reminds me of him. he even has the same mannerisms when he sings.

  • you weren't the only one thinking that

  • can someone upload "falling down laughing" It was the last song he ever wrote and a very good song!

  • Rest in Peace, Jim!

  • Crying. sorry.

  • NO! Just received this video from a friend. I didn't know Jim died. Loved his poetry. Studied them. Read the book and watched Basketball Diaries so many times. He was the best kind of humaan being. Guess I'm an ignorant fuck up. Yeah, that's me.

"Hey," Herbie said, "Tony, can you fly?"

But Tony couldn't fly, Tony died

He said, "Hey, I know it's dangerous, but it sure beats Riker's"

But the next day he got offed by the very same bikers

  • bitchin' fruit

  • Tiuric77 you are entitled to your opinion, as others are to theirs. I liked his writing in Basketball Diaries and loved this song. You can dissect it however you want, I just like it for what it is...a song.

  • holy shit that dude was wasted in the beginning

  • its "Bitchin Proof"

  • 2:05 whats he say bishinfroo?

  • david blaine is a douchebag

  • who is dat stupid cunt in the right

hearing him talk makes me wanna put a bullet in his fukin head

  • i totally agree wit' ya'

he doesn't deserve to introduce jim caroll

  • So just saying shit that happened with music in the background is supposed to be a song. The reason nobody knows this shit is because it sucks. This junky is lucky they made a movie about his story, considering there is nothing original about it. This type of shit happens to junkies all the time.

  • Yes.

Saying shit with music in the background is a song.

  • So...what's your definition of a song? Just wondering...all of the best art comes from personal experience. Canvas painting, novels, sculpture, film...what's your definition? 'Cause...if you're just some Beige/Bland kid listening to your Disney handouts...your statement makes sense. Long live the Jonas Bros!!

  • Singing over a song maybe. Or using metaphores instead of just plain out talking. Maybe having something that rhymes possibly. Having the rythm and melody have something to do with it. Shit like that. I agree with you there are lots of artists who draw from experience. And there are lots of artists who draw colored squares on a canvas and say it is a statement about the conflict of human beings. When really it's just squares, or maybe just a guy talking over a song.

  • then i have a question for you. im sure we've all heard island music. my question for you is they sometimes never talk in music like that. is it considered "not music"? to me music is when you use instruments to make a sound that's pleasing to the mind. im not a anatomy professor but its supposed to release chemicals in your brain creating pleasure. so yes this is music. weather its just people talking in the back round or no vocals at all music is music. any questions or retorts?

  • Well great we have extablished what music is. So Jim's "Music" consists of an untalented junkie talking ignorantly over shitty punk music, played by untalented musicians.

  • and the beetles were what? how about other bands that were junkies and did the same thing ie.. violent femmes? lets look at hip hop that's talking with a beat in the back round with people talking about how bad ass they are...no vocals what so ever. this song has vocal rhythm he's not just talking. hes not saying "those-are-people-who-died" he's saying "those are people who dīed dīed!"

bands like one day as a lion do the same thing and people love them. your just a minority.

  • You can refference popular bands and say they do the same. ONe difference those are all popular bands who were talented. He has no talent just negativity from a life of drug use. People are drawn to it because it is raw. But he's not a talented writer or musician. It's the drugs that make it what it is. More like looking at a car accident then listening to music.

  • You sound like a very bitter person. Hopefully you can overcome your bitterness and find peace in life bro.

  • Are you a published poet, writer or songwriter of note or just ill informed with an opinion? Just because you haven't heard of Jim Carroll doesn't mean that other people haven't. i'm not surprised that YOU "don't know this shit". You come off ignorant. If you read the novel youde know it was written by a kid. "People Who Died" is not about junkies. There are people who get stabbed, die of Leukemia, take pills, fall in front of trains, hang themselves...

  • Didn't say the song was about junkies.

I said the song consists of a junkie talking over music. It's funny how you write a lot of words yet don't notice relatiy.

If I hadn't heard of Jim Carroll then how could I be commenting on this video? It is a video of Jim Carroll isn't it? How would I know he is a Junkie? I come off ignorant because I am making jokes. And you morons take it seriously. Listen I don't like the track. Nothing anyone tells me about it will change that.

  • Vinny Micetti = David Blaine lol. Awesome song!

  • intro is great :D :D :D

  • hey didnt this album come out in the late 70s or early 80s i used to have it but i dont know i did with it

  • aha

  • This is one of the greatest songs (and groups) ever. I still love it, held up against all the "alternative" movement has to offer. But these guys... LOSE THEM!! They're every reason not to visit the East Coast (and why Americans have a bad reputation). Cut the intro - it's painful. Oh yeah, and it *sucks*.

  • My favorite poet. Fear of Dreaming is awesome.

  • Jim was actually in the movie as well wasn't he. Wasn't he the guy who talked about everything at mass reminding him of junk.

  • That dude needs to stop talking so we can see the video.

  • 1:36-1:38 looks like a young Leonardo DiCaprio; like when he played Romeo in Romeo and Juliet.

  • it is him... are you serious about that comment? i don't know if i should have replied to your comment, it's incredibly silly.

  • yeah its leo, its a scene from 'the bastketball diaries' where he played jim carroll.

  • that's david blaine!

  • holy shit! glad I'm not his friend....

  • lol...yes I agree. I am glad im not his friend. haha

  • Great song

  • good trick

  • oops, herbie sure gave TONY some bitchin proof

  • Sounds like his voice too.

  • I first heard of TJCB from that movie Tuff Turf...ooohh this rocks!!

  • the movie was not much like the book, i love the movie but i love the book more, the book doesn't mach it too much, because Jim Carroll whent through worse shit than the shit they showed in the movie, it wasn't spot on but it mathced sorta

  • at a glance Jim Carroll kinda looks like David Bowie, they both kicks ass!

  • OMG This IS Sooo Cool I Love Jim CArroll And I LOVEeee This Video!!!! I Like How The Video Has Scenes From The BAsketball Diaries Movie Which Is FREAKING AWSOME! ( Love the Leo)

  • great song and video..and jim obviously! did you know that this is the song the kids are listening to while eating pizza in ET?

  • Love the song, but the guys who intoduced the song are a bunch of losers by the looks of them.

  • Who is that adjectively David Blaine-ish guy?

  • Maybe it IS David Blaine!
