Always remember Bruce Dern exploding when he finds out what's been going on between Voight and Fonda. It was the rudest thing i'd ever heard upto that point.
I love/loved this film! Loved the music, too. The sad thing is that Voight somehow went off the rails.....changed his worldview,is Extreme Conservative now--and let his daughter slip away from him, forever.Nothing should sever the parental bond, except murder or
some unspeakabe offense. But Fonda &Voight, in this beautiful film
continue to amaze and instruct. Ron Kovic was pleased-he was the template for the Voight character. Ms.Centrum 04
Good god, you Jane Fonda "haters" are the biggest imbeciles on the internet. She went to Vietnam to protest the Americans who were fighting a useless war. Why can't you idiots figure that out?
You retard. So it was a useless war, I grant that. Having your goddess go and smile and say "click click bang bang, hope I just hit an american plane" while having her greasy thighs athrust a vietcong phallic locomuter symbol was crass and treasonous. She's a whore, she spread for ho chi minh.
Good god, you Jane Fonda "haters" are the biggest imbeciles on the internet. She went to Vietnam to protest the Americans who were fighting a useless war. Why can't you idiots figure that out?
I just watched this movie last night on HBO after not having seen it for over 30 years. It's painfully dated. The story is limp and the dialogue is, mostly, flat. Fonda's performance is a dull as her character in the movie. Her Oscar in 1971 for "Klute" was richly deserved. Fonda's award for "Coming Home" should have been given to Jill Clayburgh ("An Unmarried Woman") or Ingrid Bergman ("Autumn Sonata").
I watched this movie for the first time in a long time last night. I think this movie is as provocative as it was the day it was released. I agree that's it's neither pro-war nor anti-war. It just tells the absolute truth. I wish that there were some people who could open their minds, and see this movie for what it is - and just put their negative opinions about Jane Fonda out of their minds.
Jane Fonda is a traitor and a whore. A traitor first, a whore second. This film was, I guess, supposed to be some sort of conciliatory gesture after she parked her snatch on an artillery weapon and said publicly that she hoped it shot down american troops. I hope the gooks cleaned it good after that, otherwise it probably would have rusted clean through. Whore.
The message is still a good one. Stop the war, praise our veterans, try and topple bad governments by peaceful means. Still I get what you mean. Jane fonda is still despised for what she did to those POWs
@swastikausa I agree--ten years after said it all in "I'd love to change the world." Jane Fonda had cuntmaggots inserted into her feurdj by Roger Vadim after he dumped his "Aisha" for Fonda. She is a whore, and she should be prosecuted for war crimes. She probably caused countless numbers of our troops to die through her vile propaganda. She has never apologized--she tried once, but it was simply flatulence emitting from her "ego." Whore. We call those things "ego farts" where I come from.
swastikausa:You poor ignorant, hate-filled fool. This is past. There's no evidence for your ridiculous rantings.....I feel sorry for you.Voight is a super conservative now.Fonda is a Christian, elegant, elequent, and has asked for forgiveness for her
unwise comments in those Viet Nam clips--and has received it,from all thinking folk. I don't know where you come "from," but if NO ONE is ever forgiven there, for things said in haste or error? You come from HELL. Just want to vent.ok.

I approved of "Coming Home"--particularly of the characters portrayed by John Voight and Jane Fonda. You Vietnam veteran types are still unable to accept reality after 40 years. The USA lost the Vietnam War. You did not protect freedom there. You and Lyndon Johnson murdered millions of Southeast Asians in what was essentially a civil war. Your nation LOST that war and left with her tail between her legs. Your nation is not invincible and your nation is not always right.
It also has probably THE greatest 60s soundtrack of all time, just a phenomenal use of the era's best songs used in an unforgettable way. "Coming Home" is an absolute masterpiece.
I have heard Vietnam veterans say that there are very few movies made that showed any realty of what it was like for them; they listed Coming Home as one of the few.
mrmethos1, that's true, but i think 'born on the 4th of july' is the best, and especially does a great job at showing what the va was like back then (and still is in some parts of the country). i think it's the best because it's actually based off a true story (audobiography by ron kovic) and was made by oliver stone, who knew what he was doing. the girlfriend wasn't a real character but she was put in it for a reason - probably helped contrast this movie's message, although i've never seen it.
I also love this movie and watch it at least once a year. Taped it on VHS then transferred the tape to DVD. Excellent movie, excellent cast, excellent soundtrack. This movie has the power to move me to tears each time I watch it..This movie captured a piece of time perfectly. Ty for sharing it.
And what do you suggest be done when terrorists and communists want to rule the world? Their willingness to fight is the reason you can sit on your candy-ass and spout your opinions in the "free" world. How proud YOU must be. Freedom isn't free and if you can't stand behind our troops, feel free to stand in front of them. Wife and daughter of servicemen.
I dont think the film is just about the wrongness of our part in that war or even of wars in general, I think it was about the emotional and physical effects that it has on the people who were (at the time) forced to fight in it. That it came out at a time when American youth no longer had that threat hanging over them (and thus preferred Star Wars and videogames) is another irony. I dont think the film is strictly pro or anti war, its just the simple tragic truth, in all it's complexity.
@donjsnyder Just so you know, the latest wikileaks on confidential information reveal that nuclear chemical labs and burrows housing warheads were found in Iraq during the stages of the war. So you were wrong, the Iraq war was not a lie.
Coming Home is one of my favorite films. I have it on DVD and I watch it once a year. I LOVE this film! Jane Fonda is at her best. She is a wonderful actress. Jon Voight, (& Bruce Dern) were both amazing. This is one of the best films ever made.

Excelente film y mejores interpretaciones. La muestra de que en Hollywood a veces hacen producciones buenas, más allá de los grandes efectos especiales. Gracias.
OK. Where the movie wins it its HONESTY. All of the actors deserved their Oscar nominations. Penelope Milford who was also nominated doesn't get much credit. I believe she brought so much powerful feeling in her performance, that her performance touched me the most. I don't want to give too much of the movie away, but when her brother passed away, you could feel Milford's pain. At that moment, her performance became sublime! Voight was great! Fonda good. Dern good also.
One of my favorite movies ever. Their is not one frame of combat in this film, but it told the story of a vet so well. Fonda and Voight both were outstanding.

This film suffers from a flawed screenplay. The writing is bad and gets worse as the movie progresses. Still, Jon Voight is magnificent. I could never understand why Fonda won best actress for this. Overall, this movie doesn't stand the test of time, but Voight's work seems genuine and heartfelt. Thank you, Jon. And as for you, Jane: Get a life. You're old and boring now. We're over you.
I watch this movie with mixed emotions. My husband was a Marine in Chu Lai and Da Nang during the Tet Offensive that finally swayed opinion on that war. I can only watch when my husband isn't home. The most moving antiwar song ever is Tim Buckley's Once I Was. Peace
I like the Simon and Garfunkel and Rolling Stones song(s) they use. I have never seen this movie. I was looking at pictures of old movie theaters and saw this title mentioned. I am glad I did b/c this is a good preview. Thanks for posting. I'll see if they have it for rent.
