Paris Roubaix earnt the name "Hell of the North" when the race was run in 1919. The route was through the shattered landscape that was left after four years of brutal trench warfare. The trees were skeletons, most of the hedgerows were gone and there were no birds to singoing. One rider said "It wasn't a race, it was a pilgrimmage"
Quite possibly the greatest cycling film ever made. I love the cinematography, direction narration, soundtrack . . . and of course the legendary racers and their classic, lightweight steel (no carbon fiber) racing bicycles.
Legendary film/documentary, thank you becomearobot !
The 4 people that disliked this film: out with the names if you've got the guts ! or probably, as someone already suggested, you must have spilled them on the cobbles (the guts that is) and didn't enjoyed it !
@acul7919 I agree! Why go to the effort of finding this classic film - for free - on Youtube only to dislike it. Those that dislike are a bunch of tossers!
Paris Roubaix is by far the hardest, most demanding one day cycling event. And also my favorite to watch each year. thanks for posting this as I have never seen it before!
it's pretty dificult to say which race is the hardest but it's up there with the the tour of flanders, LBL and milan - san remo, they all have somethjing special that defines them
@sjl62 couldn't agree more. I remember watching the SeaLink Tou of the UK way back in the late 70's -early 80's, and even then being gobsmacked at their absolute confidence and arrogance, which actually spells winner!
I would hate to be Merckx's mechanic. He seems like if you had his bike set up to perfection he would still ask you to adjust something just to be awkward...
Talk about the understatement of the century! At least as far as cycling movies go, this is quite possibly the best ever made. With a top six of Demeyer, Moser, Devlaeminck, Kuiper, Godefroot, Mercx this race film is an incredible document of an earlier age in cycling.
The section beginning at 16:31 has to be one of the most beautiful depictions of cycling on film: the music, the team, the countryside, the sun. Glorious!
On the other hand though, I look at these guys and just go "WOW"! These were my heroes growing up; they really were bulkier and rougher than the stars of today, who look so damn... emaciated! I'll take a musette from the 70's in a second compared to the gel, goo, dirt bar musette bag they hand out now a days!
@peaksy888 Actually, the carbon fiber frames designed for PR are engineered to be stiff, but dampen the shock a tad bit more than a standard road frame would. That's the beauty of today's technology.
A Cro-Moly steel frame, though... it's got the ride, and much more personality than what's being made today!
I gloriosi tempi quando i ciclisti erano realmente ciclisti e non ridicoli clowns come negli ultimi 15 anni ( escluso quel fantastico grande campione che è stato Paolo Bettini ) ...... !!
How did we all become such "pussies" look at these real MEN no stupid looking useless brain buckets, STEEL frames, no PLASTIC so what if today they're a "little" faster, who gives a shit? This WAS the golden era, long gone, long gone...
There were riders knocked out on the ground and the people were just taking pictures not even helping, thats brutal! I am forever changed by watching this movie. If I dont go out and ride my bike untill I throw up I dont deserve to own it. Thank you for posting this valuable film.
A great tribute to men who rode all season long - not a planned peak for a certain race or tour. No index shifting and no carbon fiber frames could ever compete with the men that were once racers.
@SatansSpatula - Yep - just slam that Nuovo Record brake caliper into the downtube. IIRC rubber protectors on the back of NR calipers didn't arrive until 1978.
I've been looking for this video for the longest time. Classic European bike racing and clever film-making. Brings back good memories. Thank you for posting this video.
A classic study of professional cycling racing. It puts contemporary films and broadcasts on the subject to shame. Thank you so much for making it available to us.

in those days they used 53/46 or 48 now some professional use 50/38 or 52/39
and the frames are carbon, and if you look at the averaged speed it´s almost the same.
