When you're watching Star Trek on DVD, if you take a shot every time Kirk is hanging off of the edge of something you will be pretty buzzed by the end of the movie.

I finally saw the Star Trek movie. Good for people who do not know the story. It was a joke. Spocks Mom was his age. Uhura was a gorgeous but a love interest Spock?? Having every Dr. McCoy line against Spock was a joke. He looked totally inept. Too bad. Scotty was Kirks age??? How can Spock be Kirks age?? terrible. They had to actually write in a part for the black councilman.Sulu was awesome and the sword bit was great but you needed to know the original part. Too many otherthigns to list.
Course everybody's seen it, but better safe than sorry. :-)
I thought the characters, acting, humor, dialogue, and SFX were fantastic. The plot... sorta cliche.
While the Romulans looked pretty cool, they were a bit two-dimensional. I'd've liked more backstory.
My main bitch: THEY IMPLODED VULCAN! Noo! One of the most important elements of Star Trek and they DESTROY it?! One of the main reasons I looked forward to it was because they were spending more time on Vulcan.
Only bad parts of the movie as I remember it from cca 4 months ago? Shaky cam, destruction of Vulcan, and the fact that Spock actually observed a black hole destroy Vulcan without the ice moon he was on being harmed at all.
It wouldn't have been harmed in the slightest. If our sun just suddenly turned into a black hole, the only thing we would notice is that it would be dark and cold. We wouldn't be sucked in, etc. It's just gravity.
I think you're wrong here. No matter what the "red matter" really is, obviously the planet was not able to suck itself in based on its own mass and gravity alone. It obviously was sucked in by something of far greater mass or gravity than its own; thus, the newly constructed black hole should have enough mass/gravity to draw in more than just the planet itself.
To the alternative.. the black hole formed at the center just caused the planet to collapse in on itself little by little. It didn't have to be massive really. It was just a chain reaction because the planet was losing any supporting structure from the center on out.
For me, this was the end of Star Trek. It was an action flick without a substantive anything. I started watching Star Trek back in the sixties beginning with the night it premiered, and for me this movie had none of the fine story telling that the original series or the next generation had.
It was like watching a video game lots of action and special effects very little in the script department. The actual mythology was torn to shreds.
Not just torn to shreds. Nullified. The future was changed as much as it would've been had Kirk saved Edith Keeler back in the best Star Trek story ever done ("City on the Edge of Forever" by Harlan Ellison).
No one whose life is at all affected by Starfleet or the Federation or Vulcan would be unaffected by the change, and any children they would've conceived afterwards will never exist. The same sperm won't meet the same egg.
Thus no Picard, Riker, Sisko the Emissary, Janeway, etc. etc. etc.
Im not complaining, just curious. Does it make sense that, when old spok said "now I can be in two places at once" and kirk called him a cheater to which spok retorted "I learned from the best". The old spok never accused kirk of cheating in a military tribunal because that only happened after the space-time shift, so only the younger spok would have a personal knowledge of kirk cheating. Did anyone else pick up on that?
Actually it happened in the old mythos. It was brought up in "The Wrath of Kahn" about Kirk cheating as a cadet in that test. So old Spock would've known about it.
if the stereotypical arbitrarily-generated bad guy we all see in sequels (aka the bad guy from the new star trek movie) is smart enough to devise timeshifting but dumb enough to pick a time period to invade when Humans were in space instead of a time period when Humans were building boats, or before Humans had even evolved, then that makes the arbitrarily-generated bad guy from moneyfarm sequels pretty stupid, and that's even more stereotypical.
Also - this movie was specifically made to shift Star Trek away from the serious fans and attempt to place it into the hands of people who don't like the things that made the original Star Trek good.
The new movie is 100% completely and entirely devoid of the essence of Star Trek as this essence has been described through TOS, TNG, DS9, the original trek movies, etc.
Remember how much trek fans HATED Nemesis? This new trek movie is just another Nemesis on steroids and PCP.
I mean no disrespect, but if you're a star trek fan and you also liked the new star trek movie, then that means you liked TOS and TNG and DS9 etc for all the wrong reasons. If you like the new star trek movie which is missing everything that is GOOD about star trek, then you must have been enjoying something else when watching TOS and TNG.

Remember, all you who say Kirk is too much of a jerk or cocky guy, he only is because his dad died in this time so he didn't have a civilized, starfleet officer captain as a father. I mean, if you listen closely in the beginning when Kirk is driving the car, you can here his step-dad on the communicator yelling to make sure Kirk wouldn't break the car. no they don't...Romulans are at thier core warlike and vengeful...Vulcans are not...they are peaceful and logical. Nero's character was exactly right for a person that lost everything he had and blamed it on the federation.
because the Romulans were once Vulcan. when the Vulcans went the path of peace and logic and suppression of emotions, the ones who became the Romulan Empire broke off and followed that warlike path because they didn't want to follow the the same path the Vulcans did. same race...two different paths...became two different people
Romulans are very smart, maybe not logical all the time, but very cunning. A 'trained' Romulan officer would have used the time warp to a) destroy the federation in the past b) save Romulus and make it more powerful, with him later ruling it, if possible. Nero was a MINER...he probably had not much education or military training..that's why he goes bonkers ..without a decent plan!

I really enjoyed the film but there was a strange mix of farcical comedy and high drama that I found a little uncomfortable to watch...........but it was great for a stoned Saturday night with popcorn and beer. The young spock was cool.
You can tell when a reviewer says "kicks ass" over and over again that he doesn't have a clue as to what Trek is all about. This movie was made for 20 somethings who think "kicking ass" is what life is all about. Trek is not Star Wars it was about so much more. Trek is officially dead. This souless zombie may look like Trek, but it is a hollow substitute for what Gene created. Since Trek is cool now, and long time fans are told to shut up, I wonder what will happen to the profitable conventions.
First of all we're not telling you to keep quiet we are saying we disagree with you. Soulless eh, remember the scenes in which the other youths teased a young Spock. Only to finally get a reaction after attacking his mother? that sets up later events rather well. It also is reflective of the subtle racism that still exist in this country. Granted they didn't have time to explore the subject more fully due to the story.
But the movie has heart. I think you just didn't notice.
I am a senior trek authority, as I saw the first and all original episodes as they were happening, I see very little here that is contrary to the original. I'm sure most trekkies would really have to strain to remember Pike in the wheelchair in the very early episodes, and there he is right at the end!
I totally agree, I'm not an easy guy to please and the last couple of movies were, in my opinion, dreadful. But this one I enjoyed greatly. Maybe they could've cut some of the "comedy" parts which I thought fell flat but the cast themselves did a great job and the writing overall was great and definitely put me in mind of the old series.
That's the problem. It's a "classic action movie," not Star Trek. The original Star Trek commentated on the issues of the day- racism, sexism, sexual liberation, war, violence, etc. It depicted the first kiss between a white man and black woman on television. This movie had no intelligent moral content.
Also, I disagree with Cenk saying "It's a smart movie." It made no sense. Black hole that goes back in time? Right. Erasing Picard, Sisko, and Janeway? That's just not forgivable in my book.
Racism was touched upon in the scenes depicting young Spock. Captain Pike talking to Kirk in the bar touches upon whether one does something with themselves or mopes over a personal tragedy. It is smart and it has heart.
It ends up in a parallel universe / alternative time line that does not erase the original time line. the "Prime" timeline goes on, just without Spock and Nero's crew.
A Black hole created by artificial means may defy normal black hole rules.
where did it erase Picard Sisko and Janeway? there is NOTHING in this movie that suggests that. the only character that it could erase is Tuvok from Voyager when they destroyed Vulcan...and they could explain that as his ancestors were off world at the time or he was just beginning in the academy.
This movie was INSANELY good, I've never seen Lost or Cloverfield, but now I think JJ Abrams might be one of best directors I've seen in a very long time. Absolutely genius.
The only major geek complaint I had is that they knew that Romulans and Vulcans were related even though they didn't find that out until 'Balance of Terror'. But other than that it was a good solid movie.
Exactly. There were way too many inconsistencies and betrayals of the Star Trek canon for me to do anything but hate this movie. As Mission Impossible in Space, it's great. As Star Trek, it fails.
I wouldn't go that far. For me, the moment I heard Checkov struggle to say victor instead of wictor I was ready to forgive any fanish complaints I had and just enjoy the movie for what it is. And really, any differences can be explained away in that this is a different timeline so things would have turned out differently.
Well written, well acted, and pretty good directing leads to a pretty kick ass movie in my opinion.
I agree it was very well done. As for the criticisms I've seen out there -- at this point I don't know what else they could have done other than this to maintain an audience of anything other than aging die hard fans. I didn't think Scotty was over the top, by the way. Unlike the original actor, the new actor actually speaks -- well, sort of like that. It'd be like me playing a Texan in a movie. The first Scotty was just straight up American or Canadian, wasn't he? Anyway... Great movie.
Gays live in a hetero world and I was disappointed to not even see a little homoerotic touch. Fuk, gays are 2 to 10 % and I still don't exist like a non-queeny way on the silver screen.
I'm so glad JJ Abrams did a great job on this movie! I was a little worried... I love Star Trek and I heard he was going to direct a movie version of Steven King's Dark Tower series.

I finally saw the Star Trek movie. Good for people who do not know the story. It was a joke. Spocks Mom was his age. Uhura was a gorgeous but a love interest Spock?? Having every Dr. McCoy line against Spock was a joke. He looked totally inept. Too bad. Scotty was Kirks age??? How can Spock be Kirks age?? terrible. They had to actually write in a part for the black councilman.Sulu was awesome and the sword bit was great but you needed to know the original part. Too many otherthigns to list.

I thought the characters, acting, humor, dialogue, and SFX were fantastic. The plot... sorta cliche.
While the Romulans looked pretty cool, they were a bit two-dimensional. I'd've liked more backstory.
My main bitch: THEY IMPLODED VULCAN! Noo! One of the most important elements of Star Trek and they DESTROY it?! One of the main reasons I looked forward to it was because they were spending more time on Vulcan.

It wouldn't have been harmed in the slightest. If our sun just suddenly turned into a black hole, the only thing we would notice is that it would be dark and cold. We wouldn't be sucked in, etc. It's just gravity.

I think you're wrong here. No matter what the "red matter" really is, obviously the planet was not able to suck itself in based on its own mass and gravity alone. It obviously was sucked in by something of far greater mass or gravity than its own; thus, the newly constructed black hole should have enough mass/gravity to draw in more than just the planet itself.

To the alternative.. the black hole formed at the center just caused the planet to collapse in on itself little by little. It didn't have to be massive really. It was just a chain reaction because the planet was losing any supporting structure from the center on out.

For me, this was the end of Star Trek. It was an action flick without a substantive anything. I started watching Star Trek back in the sixties beginning with the night it premiered, and for me this movie had none of the fine story telling that the original series or the next generation had.
It was like watching a video game lots of action and special effects very little in the script department. The actual mythology was torn to shreds.

Not just torn to shreds. Nullified. The future was changed as much as it would've been had Kirk saved Edith Keeler back in the best Star Trek story ever done ("City on the Edge of Forever" by Harlan Ellison).
No one whose life is at all affected by Starfleet or the Federation or Vulcan would be unaffected by the change, and any children they would've conceived afterwards will never exist. The same sperm won't meet the same egg.
Thus no Picard, Riker, Sisko the Emissary, Janeway, etc. etc. etc.

Im not complaining, just curious. Does it make sense that, when old spok said "now I can be in two places at once" and kirk called him a cheater to which spok retorted "I learned from the best". The old spok never accused kirk of cheating in a military tribunal because that only happened after the space-time shift, so only the younger spok would have a personal knowledge of kirk cheating. Did anyone else pick up on that?

Also - this movie was specifically made to shift Star Trek away from the serious fans and attempt to place it into the hands of people who don't like the things that made the original Star Trek good.
The new movie is 100% completely and entirely devoid of the essence of Star Trek as this essence has been described through TOS, TNG, DS9, the original trek movies, etc.

Good Movie! I have the orginal 1960's TV show on DVD. I grew up with it on TV back in the 1960's. This is a faithful prequl in many ways. EXCELLENT.

Remember, all you who say Kirk is too much of a jerk or cocky guy, he only is because his dad died in this time so he didn't have a civilized, starfleet officer captain as a father. I mean, if you listen closely in the beginning when Kirk is driving the car, you can here his step-dad on the communicator yelling to make sure Kirk wouldn't break the car. Romulans are very smart, maybe not logical all the time, but very cunning. A 'trained' Romulan officer would have used the time warp to a) destroy the federation in the past b) save Romulus and make it more powerful, with him later ruling it, if possible. Nero was a MINER...he probably had not much education or military training..that's why he goes bonkers ..without a decent plan!

You can tell when a reviewer says "kicks ass" over and over again that he doesn't have a clue as to what Trek is all about. This movie was made for 20 somethings who think "kicking ass" is what life is all about. Trek is not Star Wars it was about so much more. Trek is officially dead. First of all we're not telling you to keep quiet we are saying we disagree with you. Soulless eh, remember the scenes in which the other youths teased a young Spock. Only to finally get a reaction after attacking his mother? that sets up later events rather well. It also is reflective of the subtle racism that still exist in this country. Granted they didn't have time to explore the subject more fully due to the story.
But the movie has heart. I think you just didn't notice.

I am a senior trek authority, as I saw the first and all original episodes as they were happening, I see very little here that is contrary to the original. I'm sure most trekkies would really have to strain to remember Pike in the wheelchair in the very early episodes, and there he is right at the end!

I totally agree, I'm not an easy guy to please and the last couple of movies were, in my opinion, dreadful. But this one I enjoyed greatly. Maybe they could've cut some of the "comedy" parts which I thought fell flat but the cast themselves did a great job and the writing overall was great and definitely put me in mind of the old series.

That's the problem. It's a "classic action movie," not Star Trek. The original Star Trek commentated on the issues of the day- racism, sexism, sexual liberation, war, violence, etc. It depicted the first kiss between a white man and black woman on television. This movie had no intelligent moral content.
Also, I disagree with Cenk saying "It's a smart movie." It made no sense. Black hole that goes back in time? Right. Erasing Picard, Sisko, and Janeway? That's just not forgivable in my book.

Racism was touched upon in the scenes depicting young Spock. Captain Pike talking to Kirk in the bar touches upon whether one does something with themselves or mopes over a personal tragedy. It is smart and it has heart.
It ends up in a parallel universe / alternative time line that does not erase the original time line. the "Prime" timeline goes on, just without Spock and Nero's crew.
A Black hole created by artificial means may defy normal black hole rules.

where did it erase Picard Sisko and Janeway? there is NOTHING in this movie that suggests that. the only character that it could erase is Tuvok from Voyager when they destroyed Vulcan...and they could explain that as his ancestors were off world at the time or he was just beginning in the academy.

The only major geek complaint I had is that they knew that Romulans and Vulcans were related even though they didn't find that out until 'Balance of Terror'. But other than that it was a good solid movie.

Exactly. There were way too many inconsistencies and betrayals of the Star Trek canon for me to do anything but hate this movie. As Mission Impossible in Space, it's great. As Star Trek, it fails.

I wouldn't go that far. For me, the moment I heard Checkov struggle to say victor instead of wictor I was ready to forgive any fanish complaints I had and just enjoy the movie for what it is. And really, any differences can be explained away in that this is a different timeline so things would have turned out differently.
Well written, well acted, and pretty good directing leads to a pretty kick ass movie in my opinion.

I agree it was very well done. As for the criticisms I've seen out there -- at this point I don't know what else they could have done other than this to maintain an audience of anything other than aging die hard fans. I didn't think Scotty was over the top, by the way. Unlike the original actor, the new actor actually speaks -- well, sort of like that. It'd be like me playing a Texan in a movie. The first Scotty was just straight up American or Canadian, wasn't he? Anyway... Great movie.

I'm so glad JJ Abrams did a great job on this movie! I was a little worried... I love Star Trek and I heard he was going to direct a movie version of Steven King's Dark Tower series.
