But for individuals like you and me, we don't go out to film these animals. Eventhough whales are beautiful animals, but just like any animal, they can become very startled very easily.

I would typically agree with the comments that say leave wild animals alone etc but in this rare instance the whales were clearly following the people and not the other way around. The wales may have been in pre mating behavior - and her touching and massaging one of the whales interrupted their normal behavior. You wouldn't get between mating or playing grizzly bears - perhaps it isn't wise to touch very large wild animals when you don't fully understand their behavior.

I suspect that the whale was in play mode. They have no way of knowing just how fragile a human being is or what our limitations are for holding our breath underwater. Obviously the whale did bring her back to the surface to breath and obviously such a powerful animal could have easily killed her but there is no mention of injuries and no apparent cuts from the whale's teeth. I don't think this was an aggressive attack at all, just scary play activity from a huge powerful marine mammal.

Find it difficult to believe the photographer was unaware of what he was filming. Didn't realize at the time that his friend, Lisa was in the mouth of the pilot whale while he was filming. Oh, that's right, you weren't aware she was being attacked by the whale at the time. Sad fact is, you two shouldn't have even been so close to this pod let alone in the water filming and trying to bond with them.
No offense: why would you hold capture of such an event as private copyrighted material? I only ask because it could be used for educational purposes, which I think (perhaps, as I don't know about the whales at all) would serve everyone much better if (respectfully) used and distributed. I don't know why people get in the water with whales. That is their territory. What if they feel you're a threat to their babies? What if it's mating season? What if they're just not interested in people being all up in their grill? I love whales, but I don't get in the water with them. If they come up to the boat to say hi, go ahead and pet them. But don't force an interaction... especially in their turf.

I think the whale saw she was running out of bubbles, I would have thought the whales wouldn't have needed to breathe that frequently otherwise, it was a short trip.
It probably thought she was asking for a lift showing off her opposeable thumbs at the beginning.

No one jumps in the water and helps her. when animals see groups of resecuers they tend to back away just like in the wild with water baffalos...they wll get together and go fightoff an attacker on one of there pride..no one helps..

The wales may have been in pre mating behavior - and her touching and massaging one of the whales interrupted their normal behavior. You wouldn't get between mating or playing grizzly bears - perhaps it isn't wise to touch very large wild animals when you don't fully understand their behavior.

I suspect that the whale was in play mode. They have no way of knowing just how fragile a human being is or what our limitations are for holding our breath underwater. Obviously the whale did bring her back to the surface to breath and obviously such a powerful animal could have easily killed her but there is no mention of injuries and no apparent cuts from the whale's teeth. I don't think this was an aggressive attack at all, just scary play activity from a huge powerful marine mammal.

Find it difficult to believe the photographer was unaware of what he was filming. Didn't realize at the time that his friend, Lisa was in the mouth of the pilot whale while he was filming. Oh, that's right, you weren't aware she was being attacked by the whale at the time. Sad fact is, you two shouldn't have even been so close to this pod let alone in the water filming and trying to bond with them.

No offense: why would you hold capture of such an event as private copyrighted material? I only ask because it could be used for educational purposes, which I think (perhaps, as I don't know about the whales at all) would serve everyone much better if (respectfully) used and distributed. Granted, you (as I see you are or are in link with Mr. Lee Tepley) should have credit as the videographer. Now to the event: Could the whale have been simply curious and 'wanted a better look'?

I have watched alot of these vids on attacks and it seems that ppl approach these whales / wild animals almost as if they figure the animals are all trained. In this case I dont think the whale was trying to be aggressive or hurt anyone, I think it whale was playing. I am glad she was okay
