Which Papal Mass was this? I thought it was the one at Yankie Stadium, but I've been told different. This is the same Mass that the street preachers were arguing with the police over the use of their bullhorns, and in Preacher717's video, "Pope Friendly Police Battle With Street Preachers," you can hear Placido Domingo singing this beautiful piece of music. The preachers were overpowered by Domingo!
How touching it is when the Pope comes to greet Placido and he falls to his knees and kisses the pope's hand. I am happy for Placido in this moment. Mr. Domingo is a throughly likeable fellow, hope I get to meet him.
Dipende tutto dai gusti.

HOW is the band a disgrace? Intonation is perfect. Playing outside for brass instruments is incredibly difficult. The tuba does an excellent job in keeping the ensemble. The flutes have excellent timber, and they act as a perfect accompaniment to Placido Domingo's voice.
Very lovely. Is it my ears, or is he singing this with a Italian accent? It lends a certain thickness to Latin that is strong and bold. I had no idea he was still around. I know the Holy Father loved it.
I said "Italian accent", not "Italian pronunciation". I'm already aware that some people pronounce Esslesiastical Latin in an Italian fashion. That's easily possible but an accent can still be detected. It takes time to learn to drop the accent when speaking a different language and its a skill, not pronunciation.
If you watch EWTN's mass, if you get the usual monkpriests, you hear it done with an American accent. If their bishop does any Latin parts, you hear his Southern accent.
I assumed (wrongly and too fast) that you were referring to the way he was pronouncing because, being a Spaniard myself, I find no trace of Italian accent but only some phonetic groups sung (and not all of them) as an Italian would do. With regard to the accent, it sounds wholly Spanish (of Spain, not Spanish-America) to me.
I am no language specialist at all. I may well be wrong.

Estoy mal?

Yes Domingo is a wonderful tenor. Now here is the bad news. I heard a couple of months ago that Domingo will switch ranges from tenor to baritone. This will probably be his final career move. I don't see him singing too much longer. The same goes for Jose Carreras.
That's not a bad news. He was a baritone when he started. He was only asked to sing for tenor parts. His sings the baritone part when he's on a duet with villazon or pavarotti.
Actually, he's not permanently switching to baritone, he said he would perform the lead baritone role in one of Verdi's works but would then continue on with tenor roles and such. He's got the talent to do both! :-)
He IS still great. Listen to some of his more recent concerts. You'll still hear him singing the high C from La Boheme in Che Gelida Manina. And he has the tone of a Baritone, even throughout his whole range. Domingo can still do it, Domingo WILL do it.
- did anybody else notice The Holy Father broke all rules and stood up and greeted Placido? He must have been so relieved to finally hear something like Placido
Yes, it was such a wonderful gesture! The Holy Father is a great music lover, he plays piano himself , and he definately appreciated this beautiful recital.
Panis angelicus fit panis hominum; Dat panis coelicus figuris terminum: O res mirabilis! Manducat Dominum Pauper, servus et humilis. Te trina Deitas unaque poscimus: Sic nos tu visita, sicut te colimus; Per tuas semitas duc nos quo tendimus, Ad lucem quam inhabitas.
I love to hear Domingo sing for the Pope, first John Paul then Benedict in my lifetime. May God bless and keep Domingo so that he can sing for the next Pope also.
... I have heard him the first time in 1973... been following him ever since and he is just the most amazing ARTIST and human being I ever met and have the honor and pleasure to know personally and be fortunate to spend time with him as friends every once in possibly ten years or so... :-)
Glod bless the Pope!.Pax.
Thanks for posting this very beautiful segment of the Pope's Mass. I, too, was among the 46,000 who came to see and hear the Pope's message of hope. Denyce Graves, Maestro Domingo, and the 4 choirs truly made this an event to remember.
Definately better than most of the selections at Mass that day. America has embarassed herself before the Pope. Seriously... Salsa music during the offertory? I felt like getting up and dancing. However, this piece was beautiful.

WOW!
Not bad for a tenor of his age!
Years and decades of constantly singing technically RIGHT obviously pay of now!

Nice to see that at least some users here on youtube have an ear for that.....

Yes, it was such a wonderful gesture! The Holy Father is a great music lover, he plays piano himself , and he definately appreciated this beautiful recital.

I love to hear Domingo sing for the Pope, first John Paul then Benedict in my lifetime. May God bless and keep Domingo so that he can sing for the next Pope also.

i hope the pope forgot for a while the bad choice of music for the communion.

Awesome
- did you notice that His Holiness broke all rules and after 'suffering' thru all the other 'music' he actually stood up to greet Placido !!
I thought that was wonderful !!!!

Glod bless the Pope!.Pax.

juanjitoD 3 years ago
UrsaMenor51 3 years ago

Thanks for posting this very beautiful segment of the Pope's Mass. I, too, was among the 46,000 who came to see and hear the Pope's message of hope. Denyce Graves, Maestro Domingo, and the 4 choirs truly made this an event to remember.

Definately better than most of the selections at Mass that day. America has embarassed herself before the Pope. Seriously... Salsa music during the offertory? I felt like getting up and dancing. However, this piece was beautiful.

Really wonderful! And I like so much the way Benedict XVI behaved when Maestro Domingo ended a song!!!
