@joseth1098 Treble = +10, Middle = 0, Bass = +4, only by using EMG pickups and Ernie Ball strings.. (on guitar : switch to bridge pickup n maximum tone knob).. hope this helps..
@joseth1098 I did a cover of orion so I researched this tone a bit. You'll find around this time James played up to 8 seperate guitar tracks (4 Mesa Boogie and 4 Marshall on the mics) layered on top of each other on each song to create this thick tone (James did all the rhythm guitars on the early albums, Kirk only played lead parts as far as I remember). The combo of Marshalls and Mesas on MOP makes it the best tone of all of their albums in my opinion, wish they hadn't changed it.
its hard to look at these little kids and imagine that james, with his girly looking face with still no facial hair, sang those lyrics so brutally and that little kirk played all those crazy solo's. hell even lars looks like a drummer, but james and kirk look way too young to have accomplished all that lmao. cliff jus looks like he's got his shit down. nuff said
I always think similar things, lol. I'm 24, almost 25, born in '87, and these guys were around my age when they made this record. It's just really cool how they made awesome music like this. They're lucky to be so successful and to have made great metal music. It's just not the same anymore, even for heavy metal. I find this shit to be heavier than most metal music today.
i've got the drum track, the guitar track and the vocal track on each seperate tab, and they are a perfect synchronize, try that if you got nothing to do :)
You are a fucking dipshit. Of course I fucking know that. Why didn't I say Kirk and Lars look like girls then? Burton looks fucking cool. Hammett in this picture looks like a girl on fucking smokes.
@Jo3man96 are you F-ing kidding me..? He didn't break his wrist, he burned both of his arms during a show, but that arm got more damage than the other. watch this video and you shall see what happened /watch?v=cyBPsFLbCXc
@dominyks Dude... James got burned in 1992. In 1992, Jason was in the band. In 1992, Cliff had already passed away. This picture shows Cliff. You do the math.
@darkjediguy123 The rig they used was a Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+ into 2 Marshall 4x12 cabs. With an additional parametric EQ. Used 3 different mics on the cabs to catch different sounds. Rhythm guitars were all James: Gibson Explorer, Flying V, and select tracks a white Jackson King V was also used. For lead (Kirk): Gibson Flying V and Jackson RR V. Thats about it.
@IcedEarth13 Yup, you have it right. I have to add in though that the Explorer he was using at the time was diiferent than the reissues Gibson has now. The Gibson Explorers of the era had Alder bodies instead of Mahogany, also his Explorers had Tom Anderson H3+ pickups in them at the time of recording of Master. A word on the King V, it is not truly known that he actually used it in the studio, but he did use it live for downtuned songs like "The Thing That Should Not Be". Some info for ya.
Has little to do with the rig. James Hetfield has stated multiple times that the most difficult part of recording the classic Metallica albums was dialing in the guitar tone. According to Bob Rock, their is a secret to it that James refuses to share. It has something to do with him attenuating one specific frequency.
Youtube won't let me post links, so search youtube for "The Thing That Should Not Be Live in 1987", then search google for "METALLICA - Encyclopedia Metallica - Equipment History of James" and "Metallica Files: Master of Puppets Era : James Hetfield's Equipments". Hetfield didn't use the Explorer/EMG combo until And Justice. On Ride and Kill 'em All he used explorer, but with the stock pickups.
@locker199601 wrong! On Kill 'em all and Ride the lightning James used his white Flying V copy with Invader pickups. After Ride the lightning was out, James broke the neck of his V and he bought a Gibson Explorer as a back up guitar, but he found the Explorer to suit him better and he made it his main guitar. All the live gigs from the Master era are done with his Exp, only Thing is done with his KV 'coz it's a downtuned song.
I agree with you that James did use an explorer live. I only pointed to Thing because that is supposedly the guitar used to record MoP. All of the sites which I've looked at say he used the Jackson. Can you provide me with a source which says otherwise?
@locker199601 sure man. youtube won't allow me to post link, but you go on google and type " montyjay " without the quotation marks. and there's a link to a metallica site where you can find info on each band member's equipment throughout the years.
@darkjediguy123 well its kinda impossible lol... james did a lot of weird shit to get this tone, i've read that they had modded mesa boogie mark II C+ with a jcm 800 preamp or something like that.. and marshall cabinets.. plus they used special rooms and mics and all kinds of shit... and for the clean tones his classic roland amp.. search google.. it's all there in interviews and stuff
does anyone know how they made the sound so "cristal clear" at the intial fill at 0:50, and during Hetfields solo at 4:10? Could it be a mixture of mic'd cab with sound straight from the line out of the amp into the mixing desk?
I'm not really a producing expert. But I think you have to achieve it with panning. one track goes to the right one to the left. Just experiment with that.
@darkjediguy123 Amp: Mesa Boogie, I think Triple Rectifier. Guitars: James:Gibson Explorer, I think Kirk Used A Jackson RR1T (Custom made), EMG 81(Bridge), EMG 60 (Neck). Metallica didnt have their ESP Endorsement deal yet. And as far as amp settings go, Gain cranked, bass at around 6 or 7, mids 0-2 1/2, and Treble at around 7-9 1/2. Hope it helps
@darkjediguy123 For this tone they used the now rare Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+ with Marshall 1960BV(Marshall 1960 straight with 75 watt Vintage 30 speakers) cabs. That there plus an EMG 81 in a Mahogany guitar will get you as close as you will ever get to that tone. The Mesa Mark IV/Mark V can get you kinda close but it can't get you as close as the Mark IIC+. They did a few other tricks on the album as well, but the key bits are the IIC+ into a 1960BV and a Mahogany guitar with an EMG 81.
@forestofrencho Actually they most likely used G12-65 celestions. Flemming himself says he has no clue what speakers were in the cabs but they had many different ones. They were all being rented. So they just used whatever sounded good. Also James was using the 500T pickup at this point, he didn't start using EMG 81 until the MOP tour. A cab with V30s will sound close, to me this just sounds more like G12-65's. AJFA sounds more like V30s, Black Album sounds like a mix of V30's and greenbacks.
Don't take the montyjay site like it's the bible. Most of that info was collected many years ago long before Flemming came along to dispel many myths. It's good for the pics and to get a basic knowledge of what was used but there are many things that are incorrect. Someone should make a new MetallicA gear site that's actually updated, I might someday. It has some good info but don't read it as facts.
@mesiebooga You don't think I know that already. I have found the errors in the gear they are using. Btw, I looked at the specs of 1960BV cabs, they are 70 watt, not 75. But I have the basic rig laid down here. I know for a fact that this is what they used since I have some rare photos of James in front of his rig during the Master Of Puppets sessions. They might have slaved their IIC+ heads into Marshalls, but a IIC+, a guitar with mahogany and EMG 81's, and a Marshall 1960 BV will do it.
@forestofrencho Not arguing with you, just adding some helpful facts. I'm not saying they didn't use V30's, just that I didn't think so. For all we know they could of had 1 V30 and 1 G12-65 cab. They didn't even know what were in the cabs. You're right that a IIC+, EMG's, and V30s will get you close enough. I was just saying what they in fact used. They did not use EMG's yet but of course they will work. Also when looking at things like spkrs you need to look at specs from pre 85, things change.
@forestofrencho BTW I have some pretty rare photos of Hetfield as well, there probably not as rare as we both think. Is yours of him leaning back with his King V and mr bubbles shirt in a darker room with carpet? If it's the same photo then from what Flemming says I don't think that was in the studio for MOP, he said the whole room was wood, even the floors.
@mesiebooga Ok that is true. It is the same photo, I was kinda over blowing its rarity. Since we both seem to have a vast amount of knowledge on this subject, i think we should hit each other up in Google+ or something, see what we can figure. And about the speakers and cab thing, I too am not sure. The different sound things though can be equated to different studios and different mic combinations. And about the 500T pickup, James has stated that he switched to EMG on the lightning tour.
@forestofrencho Yeah he has said that a few times but most people who study this would agree that he was probably either mistaken or trying to throw people off, he is known for being very secretive with his studio setups. Not one single known photo of James does he have EMG's around RTL, and the first time he was seen with them was around 87. Flemming said he was using the explorer with stock pickups for MOP.
@mesiebooga Very true, I have seen many live photos of him with his Gibson "More beer" Explorer and it had stock pickups. And I agree with you, many artists give out false info about gear.
@forestofrencho My favorite is his "so what" 84. Same as the "more beer", I just like the "so what" better. I'm actually buying an original 1984 Gibson explorer from a friend. Not the crappy reissue from a few years ago, the real thing. I need to refret it, repaint it, and get all new parts. I'll make an accurate "so what" copy. Complete with the back of the neck unfinished.
@mesiebooga Aww nice, I love his "So What" better as well. I am saving up my money for three things, an Axe Fx II, a Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+, and a hand built replica of James's legendary "EET FUK" ESP, complete with fake headstock damage. And I might just get an 84 Explorer reissue, beef it up with good parts, and slap a Gibson 500T in there, just so I can have a "So What" guitar too.
@forestofrencho I'd get a Mark III instead, just me. IIC+ for $2500 or III for $1000. Go for a real 84 instead of the RI, a used RI still goes for more than a real 84 and the quality is equal to epiphone for the RI. And to put my foot in my mouth I may have been wrong about the 500T. Turns out it came out in 1992 so he possibly had dirty fingers (stock in 84), or swapped it for something else. Dirty Fingers are very similar to the duncan invader so it would make sense.
@mesiebooga Well, when I buy a Mark IIC+ I will have a job, a well paying job hopefully. So I will actually be able to afford it. I will take your advice on the Explorer though. And yes, it could have been a dirty fingers, it couldn't have been an Invader as it would have the pole pieces on it in photos of the puppets era. I do have to admit that this does actually sound like it was not recorded with EMGs. Please note that for this sound they did heavy multi tracking.
@mesiebooga I have read that they did around 4 guitar tracks left, 4 right doing a slightly different riff, and like 4 down the middle doing palm muted notes only. Crazy shit, I have to admit that I want time travel without time paradoxes. That way i would go back and steal James's rig xD
@mesiebooga Dude! I just figured out what guitar he was using, it all matches up, and strangely the body is made of Alder not Mahgany! Blew my mind man!
In 1983 gibson introduced a gibson explorer that had an alder body and was referred to as the gibson explorer 83 . The Guitar had 2 humbuckers , maple neck , ebony fingerboard , 22 fret dot inlays , triangular knob patterns and chrome plated hardware . Discontinued in 1989 .
@MrNathanR14 They used a Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+ on this album, Kill Em All and Ride The Lightning are Marshalls, they switched to Mesa for Puppets and used their IIC+ up till Load. So to get the Black Album, Justice or Puppets tone, you need a Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+. Unfortunately they were made for a limited run in the Mid 80's. A good IIC+ with the required EQ and Simulclass will run you upward of $2000. These amps are also what Petrucci used on a few albums.
Huh...Kirk's distortion seems to be more Bass - And - Mid Packed, while James' has more Gain and Treble. Don't you agree?

It has some good info but don't read it as facts.
mesiebooga 7 months ago
@mesiebooga You don't think I know that already. I have found the errors in the gear they are using. Btw, I looked at the specs of 1960BV cabs, they are 70 watt, not 75. But I have the basic rig laid down here. I know for a fact that this is what they used since I have some rare photos of James in front of his rig during the Master Of Puppets sessions. They might have slaved their IIC+ heads into Marshalls, but a IIC+, a guitar with mahogany and EMG 81's, and a Marshall 1960 BV will do it.
forestofrencho 7 months ago

If it's the same photo then from what Flemming says I don't think that was in the studio for MOP, he said the whole room was wood, even the floors.
mesiebooga 7 months ago
@mesiebooga Ok that is true. It is the same photo, I was kinda over blowing its rarity. Since we both seem to have a vast amount of knowledge on this subject, i think we should hit each other up in Google+ or something, see what we can figure. And about the speakers and cab thing, I too am not sure. The different sound things though can be equated to different studios and different mic combinations. And about the 500T pickup, James has stated that he switched to EMG on the lightning tour.
forestofrencho 7 months ago
@forestofrencho Yeah he has said that a few times but most people who study this would agree that he was probably either mistaken or trying to throw people off, he is known for being very secretive with his studio setups. Not one single known photo of James does he have EMG's around RTL, and the first time he was seen with them was around 87. Flemming said he was using the explorer with stock pickups for MOP.
mesiebooga 7 months ago
@mesiebooga Very true, I have seen many live photos of him with his Gibson "More beer" Explorer and it had stock pickups. And I agree with you, many artists give out false info about gear.
forestofrencho 7 months ago
@forestofrencho My favorite is his "so what" 84. Same as the "more beer", I just like the "so what" better. I'm actually buying an original 1984 Gibson explorer from a friend. Not the crappy reissue from a few years ago, the real thing. I need to refret it, repaint it, and get all new parts. I'll make an accurate "so what" copy. Complete with the back of the neck unfinished.
mesiebooga 7 months ago
@mesiebooga Aww nice, I love his "So What" better as well. I am saving up my money for three things, an Axe Fx II, a Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+, and a hand built replica of James's legendary "EET FUK" ESP, complete with fake headstock damage. And I might just get an 84 Explorer reissue, beef it up with good parts, and slap a Gibson 500T in there, just so I can have a "So What" guitar too.
forestofrencho 7 months ago
@forestofrencho I'd get a Mark III instead, just me. IIC+ for $2500 or III for $1000. Go for a real 84 instead of the RI, a used RI still goes for more than a real 84 and the quality is equal to epiphone for the RI. And to put my foot in my mouth I may have been wrong about the 500T. Turns out it came out in 1992 so he possibly had dirty fingers (stock in 84), or swapped it for something else. Dirty Fingers are very similar to the duncan invader so it would make sense.
mesiebooga 7 months ago
@mesiebooga Well, when I buy a Mark IIC+ I will have a job, a well paying job hopefully. So I will actually be able to afford it. I will take your advice on the Explorer though. And yes, it could have been a dirty fingers, it couldn't have been an Invader as it would have the pole pieces on it in photos of the puppets era. I do have to admit that this does actually sound like it was not recorded with EMGs. Please note that for this sound they did heavy multi tracking.
forestofrencho 7 months ago
@mesiebooga I have read that they did around 4 guitar tracks left, 4 right doing a slightly different riff, and like 4 down the middle doing palm muted notes only. Crazy shit, I have to admit that I want time travel without time paradoxes. That way i would go back and steal James's rig xD
forestofrencho 7 months ago
@mesiebooga Dude! I just figured out what guitar he was using, it all matches up, and strangely the body is made of Alder not Mahgany! Blew my mind man!
In 1983 gibson introduced a gibson explorer that had an alder body and was referred to as the gibson explorer 83 . The Guitar had 2 humbuckers , maple neck , ebony fingerboard , 22 fret dot inlays , triangular knob patterns and chrome plated hardware . Discontinued in 1989 .

@mesiebooga And by the way, stock pickups for the time = Dirty Fingers pickups.

@darkjediguy123
I think James uses a Marshall JCM 900, with a multi effects loop running through it, but i'm not sure. :)
MrNathanR14 1 year ago
@MrNathanR14 They used a Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+ on this album, Kill Em All and Ride The Lightning are Marshalls, they switched to Mesa for Puppets and used their IIC+ up till Load. So to get the Black Album, Justice or Puppets tone, you need a Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+. Unfortunately they were made for a limited run in the Mid 80's. A good IIC+ with the required EQ and Simulclass will run you upward of $2000. These amps are also what Petrucci used on a few albums.
