yes you do have to be popular to get the girl you want. For instance if lots of other girls find you attractive and talk about you then the chances of a girl you like will also like you. This is all to do with social attraction.If she knows other girls like you then she will obvously know theres some attraction towards you so she will also be attracted in some way and start to like you.

That social proof thing works, I did it on accident freshman year of college lol. I started trying to talk to a lot of girls.
