The labels for that record got mixed up at Al Levine's pressing plant. I know this because I was working there at the time."I" was supposed to be the A-side, but when jocks played "I," they heard "Nite Owl" instead, and liked it. By the time [Specialty owner] Art Rupe caught the error, "Nite Owl" was already a hit around town. I was pressing my own record at Levine's when Art called me up to say that it was a hit.
Found this on Tony's site!! Might answer some questions!!
"Nite owl was a name my 'mother" Nila had for me because I was always staying out late at night. I turned that phrase into a little song and recorded it on July 4, 1955, at Master Recorders in Hollywood, with The Chimes singing behind me, even though they were billed on the record as The Champs. The Chimes backed everybody on Specialty. They were Charles Jackson, David Cobb, Pookie Whooten and John Talbert.
i found this on volume one of East side story and immeadiately bought the Cd it also includes the song my Big Jay Mcneely "theres something on your mind" which featured on southland the series check em out, -from the blue eyed soul brother, (but my eyes are brown but you know what i mean lol)
I like goin to the mall n the first place i go is the music store. I go straight to the keyboards n start playin this song n singin it in front of everybody lol! its amazing how many ppl come by just to listen ;)

@TheZoner87 Played this rola to death in my old neighborhood in Boyle Heights back when I was 14 yrs old, wearing my starched Khakis, spitshines and a ironed white T-shirt with a ton of three flowers hair dressing on my hair. At least i had hair back then. LOL Bought tha rola on 4th and Broadway in Downtoiwn LA back then. Great old days.
@LosAngeleno1959 When I was on probation here in Phx, my parents sent me to stay with my uncle Kiko. On 130 N. Hicks, cross street Michigan. I had the best time there, Picked up alot of 45's, Thee Midniters, Jonny Chingas, Brenton Wood, Sly, Slick & Wicked and also Stacey Adams and Zoot. Hanged out at the mercado. It was paradise for me. But I had to return to Phx. Hey thanks.
@TheZoner87 Hey man! My house was just seven blocks west of you on First and Soto. I know Hicks and Michigan well. Had a lot of friends from Lomita Primera there. I use to shine shoes at the Mercado when I was a kid in the late sixties. Still go there today as my doctor is right on Hicks and First St.
