  • actually, the reason your chisels don't last is because they are cold chisels and wood chisels. Those won't last very long. You need hot chisels. You can check out Blacksmith Depot or Centaur Forge. They're pretty inexpensive about $10 for a chisel.

  • @Ginyru I have a couple of those and they do work well altough the ones I got were from a local supplier and about $20.

  • please dress your tools. that mushroom on your chisel heads and hammer faces are a breeding ground for sharp ballistic chips to shoot off in your face. and they are razor sharp. i got laid open by a mushroom head on a spike by barely touching it once. so be safe! and enjoy your grinder!

  • just a word here nearly all the tools in this video were bought a couple days before i shot this video so yes they are rusted. this video was to show ppl a good start for collecting the tools and as i always say you make due with what you have on hand.

  • I think I would have cleaned up the rust on my tools before starting this video, makes me ask are you a craftsman, as far as your chisels try dipping them in some water as you use them Oh wait they where in water the rust told me that well anyway good video

  • ok in your vids i keep seeing the hammer type thing that has a point on one end and a flat like chisle on the other what is that?

  • @jokemaster383 thats a chipping hammer for welding

  • As a smith I hate seeing people useing ball peen hammers for forging...ball peens are hardened steel hammers made for forming cold steel, where as cross peens or sledges are softer steels. You strike a ball peen hammer and that hardened steel face on the hardened steel plate of an anvil and its gonna bounce back and clock you in the face not to mention mare you anvil...please use soft head hammers

  • @millerj3066 otherwise good video dude

  • @millerj3066 dont miss then

  • this video has helped me out alot thanx i didnt know about the hammer bit because i am still learning to be a blacksmith

  • He looks like my doctor ....

  • Nice video. Thank you for giving me some ideas on how to start doing this.

  • ive had my gradfathers tools since he passed away and i always thought that the horseshoe rasp was for wood thanks for the vid now i know what it was used for and its proper name. You learn something new everyday!

  • if you forge weld a peice of high carbon into a peice of low carbon the low carbon will act as a heat sink and will help keep the edge from over heating and softening, thats how i do my chisels and they last very long that way

  • have you tried making or reforming your chisels? you are a Smith

  • yes i have a set of specialty chiseles I have made that work very well. The focus of this video was tool for someone begining who doesnt know how to make those tools yet.

  • did u temper the chisels? that would make them last alot longer

  • Actually I usually but the cheeper ones I have found unless I make them myself they dont last long enough to matter or bother with. Just reshape them on the grinder latter

  • Nice vid !

Just a note to those getting started- Don't think anything of the bright orangy colored rust you see on items throughout this video, it will be your constant companion if you have an outdoor shop. You can take a wire brush and clean a chisel, for example, so it is shiny and clean, bare metal and overnight it will have this "flashrust" appear on it. No problem, it is nothing and for the most part you can wipe it off with your hand.

  • Video looks great!!!

  • Horse Hoof rasp also a coarse wood rasp would do the job I only use this 1 for hot rasping. I will cover this skill in latter videos

  • How do you spell the name of the file at 4:18
