A totally different extended version was being played in the big clubs in NYC, I remember it having a LONG instrumental introduction, about 5 minutes before the vocals even begins. Much more experimental like PIL.
Is this a real SatB release or something done in a bedroom?
I remember being on the dancefloor to this long club mix version at club "Stigmata" back during the late nineties(I was thinking,"when is this song gonna end my legs are aching").
somehow snuck in through the side door and saw them live at UofHouston campus in '83? My friend and I both thought 'Puppet Show' was their best song; they did a puppet show... anyway, I never caught the double meaning, er, the historical aspect; I always took the meaning to be... killin' ourselves doin' the dust, you know; they did another interesting song about 92 degrees F
Ludilo!I don't give a damn about other's comment's,maby because I'm new at using internet,I have vinil record's from 80-90,and I adore original, but for me everything is BETTER EXTENDED AND REMIXED!
A chain reaction of creativity starting in the 70's with Kraftwerk and even Tangerine dream. Nothing like the Sisters in concert the few they played at their peak.
In addition, it was the "No Nukes" time period where the Greens were beginning to have more of a political voice - I always equated the lyrics with what was going on with Reagan and the Soviets during the early 80's arms race - turned out Reagan was a semi-good guy getting arms control agreements signed with Gorbachev.......
Mudman1881 is right, in the lyrics it mentions the Lares shrine that was in every Roman's home. Damn, just read the lyrics...if you know ANYTHING of Pompeii or seen the History channel it should be obvious.
You don't think it could be using Pompeii as an allegory for the generally transient nature of human endeavours, the fear of which is particularly given form today in the idea of nuclear destruction? (the lads do wear rather modern looking clothes in the video)
what in the world ever happened to siouxsie? someone please tell me.

Just one of the best songs I've ever heard in my life.. the 80's was perhaps the biggest artistic renaissance that nobody ever acknowledges

As much as I like extended versions of songs such as this, still a lot of people tend to the album versions.
