I love the Alan Zweig films; Vinyl, I Curmudgeon, Loveable. Great cinema doesnt have to have a budget of millions, many big Hollywood projects are compromised. Alan Z. proves content and narrative are what is essential...
For myself it is the music first and on the original format second,I would'nt collect vinyl if there was'nt any music on them or I could'nt play them.
Im not too fussy about condition, as long as it's not thrashed. As long as no crakle, im down, espacially the undisputed truth joint i got this arvo.. ughh
I am a music collector,it's all about music, though i believe with the right gear vinyl still sounds a lot richer than CD - no compression just pure sound! I'm not a completist - though it is nice to have ex+ original pressings if possible of course, but if i don't like a particular album i won't include it , so most of my fave artists' collections have holes. All my records gets played, i' not a mint investment freak whos stuff sits in a bank vault.
Good point. I'd add that 8 track tapes can have better sound than any other format since they are closest to the original professional recording tape stock used back then. CD's never get me as jazzed as LPs.
I am curious. Most of you reading this...do you collect vinly for the music or for the collector item that is the LP? I have always said I don't buy an album that I don't actually like the music on it? That I would "WANT" to listen to at some point because of something I likedon it AT THE TIME I bought it. Is the true for others or not? Just curious
music is a big part but i do also think its about the artwork and owning something. well artwork is a factor in me choosing to buy a record, but i've never really bought records just for the artwork or thinking i will like it later.
I collect for the music and the album cover. Sometimes I buy weird stuff just for the cover, especially those goony religious records with the big hair people and great old tour buses on the covers.

Hey, I dig Joni Mitchell, but any woman that would want me to throw away The Meters, but keep Joni Mitchell, would not be worth marrying.

I don't think your 100% right, mystic4fred. Yes as a rule vinyl is the best way to hear music but there are exceptions such as:
David Bowie "Young Americans", the 2007 EMI CD sounds much better than the 1975 RCA LP.
Kate Bush "Hounds of Love", the original cassette sounds better than either the LP or CD.
The Goons "Ying-Tong Song" (best novelty single ever). The mono 78 sounds 100x better than the endlessly re-issued 1960's false-stereo version.
So swings and roundabouts etc...

yes of course you are right there are exceptions though i was speaking generally - but cassette?

I love this film. I didn't think there were people who were even more freakier than I was as a record collector!
