Also, comparing Iraq and WW2 is hypocritical, in WW2, it was another country invading France, in Iraq, it was an internal conflict in which other countries decided to/to not get involved. @LordSulkine, The Normans were not French in 911, when they arrived and settled in Normandy, but by 1066, after 165 years of intermixing and assimilation into French society, it dramtically changed them, not only by culture, but also by heritage and their bloodline. Only the elite of Norman society were Scandinavian. They wern't Vikings by the time William invaded England, they even said they were French in the Bayeux tapestry "Hic Franci Pugnant" (Here the French are fighting)

Had William not been delayed, he would have run into the full force of Harolds army. But as events unfolded, he ended up landing unopposed as Harold had to fight a viking invasion in Northumbria.
By the time William faced Harolds army, it had marched almost 500 miles, and defeated the vikings at Stamford Bridge, but at the cost of 3000 men. Harolds Fyrd was further depleted when farmers who had already done their alotted service left the army to harvest crops before they spoiled in the fields

@velapulsar, on the Bayeux tapestry, the army which invaded Britain in 1066 was called "French" (Francos, Francorum...), not Norman. And the new rulers of England spoke medieval French ("Dieu et mon droit"), no longer the Norman language.

They destroyed the army of the Frankish kings again and again. king Louis IV d'Outremer was taken prisoner by the Normans and forced to give his son to them as a hostage and a huge ransom for his liberty. @velapulsar What the Normans were and what we are still is Normans. Not Scandinavians and not French but Normans. Our Scandinavian founding fathers were one of the many people that we come from,. My family name for example Anquetil is of Scandinavian origins from Asketill. Before them there were many Saxon colonies settled amongst Gallo-Romans and Franks. Out of this all came a new culture into existence, Norman culture. And we are proud of it and to be Normans.
