With the benefit of hindsight one is compelled to ask if the principle reason for Britain and France declaring war on Germany had been a result of Hitler annexing Poland, what had the Allies really achieved if - at the end of the war - all they had done is supplant one tyrant/tyranny with another... Seems to me that with the exception of administering a conquered Germany, the Allies should have insisted on the complete autonomy of Poland and other East Eorpean countires that had been liberated

Korea was divided along the 38th parallel as part of what was to be a temporary arrangement between forces of the United States and the Soviet Union following the collapse of the Japanese army there. With the benefit of hindsight one is compelled to ask if the principle reason for Britain and France declaring war on Germany had been a result of Hitler annexing Poland, what had the Allies really achieved if - at the end of the war - all they had done is supplant one tyrant/tyranny with another... Seems to me that with the exception of administering a conquered Germany, the Allies should have insisted on the complete autonomy of Poland and other East Eorpean countires that had been liberated

Yeah, and if you really want to put the suffering of Eastern Europe under Soviet domination into perspective, think about when World War II REALLY ended for them. For Western Europe and the rest of the world it was 1945, but it would be another 50+ years before countries in Eastern Europe would be liberated from the consequences of WWII; Soviet tyranny and occupation.

I think Britain and France after WW1 knew Germany would not stop at Poland so they declared war.
I do agree that countries Conqured by the Axis should of been returned to their rightful governments. As for Poland the Russians would never of returned it as they invaded Poland with the Germans under the Nonaggression Pact. Question then gathers as to why Britain and France didnt declare war on Russia at the time of invasion of Poland?

Eh, their strategic position wasn't totally screwed until after the summer of 1943 (kursk.) December of 1941 was a mental jolt, but their strategic position was still potentially totally recoverable assuming a 1942 summer offensive was well-planned and executed.
This, however, failed, and as such people began being very worried.

You're right. I'm always surprised by people who try to portray Hitler as some kind of master strategist. He just took credit for what his Generals did. He definitely was inept considering the fact that he preferred his soldiers to fight to the last man instead of making a strategic retreat. But i should be thankful he was inept otherwise everyone like me would have ended up in the gas chambers.

@macnos Most people do not understand that Hitler's conception about war was totally out of date. His experience was that of I World War where during an enemy assault you could defend some posts or "fortresses" as he called them to pin the enemy attack down. But modern artillery and armored units could easily continue their march leaving just an umbrella of artillery behind to watch over the encircled units. No matter how many times his generals explained this to him, he did not accept it.
