  • I love this guy. Just the way he moves and does everything is cool.

  • really enjoyed it.

one little detail, Ringo always put a handkerchief on his snare to dampen it a bit

  • Why Ringo is great. 1. He had perfect time. No click track needed which made it very easy for the engineer, as playing was always perfect. 2. He always came up with right groove to complement the song. 3. He could play the odd time measures with ease. 4. Though he was a lefty, he had a great right hand and could play a fast ride (16th notes) and never tire or change time. 5. People think that Beatles songs are easy because the sound easy. Try and play a McCartney bass line.

  • are you actually fucking kidding me? the playing is good, but the written drums are actually pathetic. how does this show he's underrated? all you guys and this video are proof that he is overrated.

  • @ScenesFromThisMemory Just curious, how would you have improved upon this written part to make it not pathetic?

  • @ZachJonesTunes well, i would not make the main beat the exact same thing all the way through. i'd add ghost notes, whack some independent bass in there, instead of just boom, pah, boom boom pah for the entire damn rock beat. i wouldn't even use a 8 beat for most, maybe some 16th paradiddle grooves/beats on the ride and hihat, which would still compliment this song

and i wouldn't use the simple, uncreative RLRLRL etc, fills that Mr Starr couldn't seem to get enough of.

    rudiments mate, rudiments.

  • @ScenesFromThisMemory Ghost notes to me are a taste thing. Generally, I'm not a fan. Especially in groove based music, feel is king. Ghosts sound sloppy to me, even when played crisply. I like them occasionally as a momentum builder, but in this case, the half open hat does the trick without compromising the groove. As for the kick pattern, I love the tight lock with the bass guitar on the verse and the variation on the chorus gives it the perfect lift.

  • @ScenesFromThisMemory The snare fills seem like more of a written part, which help to define the song itself. The tom fills are just signature Ringo. I could tell you exactly what song this is by just hearing the drum track alone. That goes for most Beatles songs. You can't say that for most drummers.

  • @ZachJonesTunes well, i suppose ghost notes are a matter of taste

the kick pattern is tight, but it's so boring, i fail to see how it shows ringo's ability, anyone can do that, and timekeeping is actually far simpler than people make out

i see your point about the fills, but the thing is, signature ringo is unoriginal and boring, he is not the first to do it, and clearly not the last... it's almost cliched

  • @ScenesFromThisMemory I'm not a drummer, but to me drumming is about feel first. That's what I look for in a drummer. Even the drummer in this video is nailing the parts, but his feel is nowhere near as good as Ringo's. I hear people SAY that Ringo's signature fills are unoriginal all the time, but almost never hear anyone PLAY them accurately. As for time keeping, jazz players will tell you that's everyone's job. In rock bands, players always rush, the drummer and bassist HAVE to be solid.

  • @ScenesFromThisMemory i personallt think ringo's approach was much more interesting, considering so many drummers from the 80s overdid everything lol. to a non drummer like me, this sounds freakin awesome, and i wanna jump in on it, but maybe to a drummer like you it sounds chilidsh and boring.

  • Like all good musicians, Ringo's choices of embellishment define his artistic economy.

Another drummer would be too busy, or attempt to over-drive the rhythm -Ringo chooses what precisely underscores the movement of the song, thus enhancing the song as a whole-he is not driven by Ego, but by what supports the Music.

  • @GalaxyHorse You said it! In fact, that's a big part of why so many guitarists HATE drummers. They play too loud and too busy instead of just keeping the beat. It's fine to have little fills here and there and uniqueness, but the main job of a drummer is to keep everyone tight and in step with each other while providing sweet beats for people to move to. Ringo's playing does just this and is instantly recognizable and unique to boot!

  • Ringo Starr uncreative? unspectacular? this is real nonsense. Suggestion: Anyone take a headphone and "listen carefully" to all his playing with The Beatles (especially albums like Rubber Soul, Abbey Road and Sgt. Pepper's) and to his solo albums

  • In the words of Paul McCartney in the movie A Hard Day's Night, hair dryer in hand, "SHAZAM!"

  • Freakin' Sweet!!! =)

  • Freakin' Sweet!!! =)

  • Nice job. Love that "Mersey Beat" on the bass drum.

  • You want hard Beatles songs to play on drums? Tell Me Why, I Feel Fine, A Day in the Life are a good start!

  • @lptomtom there is no hard beatles songs to play on the drums i think

  • Awesome job man!

  • Your snare sounds a little dirty in some parts.

  • I love your hi hat technique. You keep a steady tempo. If your not in a band you should be.

  • Nice. Now how about that two handed build up fill on "Tell Me Why." : ) That's something a lot of guys can't do.

  • Your vids are the best on showing how the Beatles played. I can't remember what the program was called but Ringo performed for an intimate audience and talked in between songs with the audience. One thing I remember he said was that he was lefthanded yet played a kit set up for a rightie, so that affected his approach somewhat. As a lefty myself that plays a righty guitar and the same on the drums , I always remembered that comment.

  • @urmominbedissexy Being a good ANYTHING is hard.

  • @urmominbedissexy No, you´re wrong ´cos to be a good drummer doesn´t mean that that it´s impossible do a cover of it

  • Good job!

  • Ringo should be knighted

  • @TheMeanMrMustard909 probably joking because they fired the 1st drummer the only reason why was because Ringo was a better drummer. John was a bit of a ass hole at times anyway

  • @LedZepMan97 George Martin recorded the Beatles on two tracks, making the drums inseparable from the other sounds. If the tracks were overdubbed, the original drums would still be audible. And in mid '63, when Purdie says he did the overdubs, those songs had already been released in the UK. The Capitol releases are identical. Purdie's resume is fabulous. He had no need to pad it, but maybe thought he could get away with it if he didn't know how thoroughly the Beatles' music had been analyzed.

  • fantastic reproduction of starrs top qualities...timing.

  • I hope he shows up Sunday with Paul at the Grammy Awards. I am lucky enough to be going as guest of Dave Grohl.

  • Ringo is the worlds greatist drummer. Just ask him. The funny thing is that he ALMOST is/was except for maybe Bonham and Moon. both of whom are hopefully RIP.

  • Spot on and spectacular drumming! Definitely agree that Ringo is underrated. It's all about the subtleties, and he did it well and so did you.

  • I agree with you 100%, Brilliant reproduction, thanx

  • right on, dude. what did you use to record? sounds great!

  • I remember reading a birthday tribute to Ringo written by a flashier drummer who admitted that when he worked as a session drummer, or sat in with another band, he could never get away with showing off. He was always being told, "Play it like that fella Ringo -- he's just right." Amen.

  • wow. thats fun!

  • I recently saw Ringo's appearance on Conan. On this, he revealed that he is, in fact, left handed. His grandmother tried turning him right handed. The problem is, in drumming, you will naturally lead with your dominant hand. On a backwards set (for his natural hand dominance) you tend to come in under your fills. He may sound like he isnt doing much, but in all reality, he is doing alot but it is simple stuff. Therefore, I do think he should be on the Mount Rushmore of Great Rock Drummers

  • I don't believe Ringo's drumming is often criticized. His excellent taste is obvious in every song he played in. Beatles music wouldn't have been the same without his drumming. If Ringo and George are underrated, it's because they didn't like showing off. They both could have done more technical stuff if they had wanted to. For the Beatles, what counted most was the song as a whole and that's why they were so good as a band.

  • GREAT MAN !

& ITS EVEN GOT THAT CRASH SYMBAL ENDING.

I NEVER FOUND FAULT WITH RINGO ALWAYS

    LIKED HIS DRUMMING.

  • The ones who think that Ringo sucks aren't listening...

  • Guess John, Paul and George knew a bit about music and were never going to play with no slouch.

    Of course you are right.

Love to see you do "Sgt Pepper's reprise" one of the greatest and most recognisable drum riffs ever.

  • WHO DISLIKED IT!?!?!?!

  • this song is fairly underrated...

  • Of course he is an awesome drummer. He was the drummer for the fucking Beatles!!

  • I like the right hand technique on the hat. Reminds me of someone.

  • @mysteryshrimp ringo perhaps?

  • i think ringo did even better on A day in the life on the sgt. pepper album. the drum fills are amzing, and ringo should definately be recognized for that.

  • YES YES YES! Ringo is THE GREATEST!

  • You missed a note...

  • John Lennon can't even be put into words, Paul McCartney is the coolest, George Harrison is the best, and Ringo...

RINGO IS THE GREATEST! Now everyone thumbs up zeromant80's comment, we need that to be at the top of this page for all eternity.

  • @PogalWalgon SHANSHA M

    æ NE

  • Some people just don't understand how playing in the pocket works. ringo is a fine drummer. Sometimes restraint works, obviously it worked for the beatles. imagine if another great drummer played for the beatles, say maybe a keith moon or a bonham of sorts. the feel of the beatles would be completely different.

  • I could play this well. I practiced but I couldnt copy Ringo's fills on the toms. How do I master copying fills? Advise please? I think its my weak point, copying fills. I've been studying Ringo fills and John Bonham fills too.

  • My best example is "The End", but you really made me see (or hear) how great drumming he performed in other songs as well, such as this one

  • Keith > Ringo > Everyone else.

It's also interesting that he's arguably had the most successful post-Beatles career of any of them.

  • @mysteryshrimp Bonzo > Keith > Ringo > Everyone else. FIXED.

  • Ringo was the king of the drum fill....awesome drummer in my opinion

  • Ringo. ♥ Best from The Beatles.

  • he still the worst singer out of the beatles

  • lol. Ringo is the "Ugly one", but I have to admit this is WAY better than most drummers today. (exeption of neil peart)

  • thriftables says it perfectly.

also-Ringo isnt in the rock and roll hall of fame??

  • Also, great job. I think he doing the same kick pattern during the closed hats as he is in the open hats though :)

  • Are you doing an up and down swipe on the hats?

  • some of the stuff that Ringo played was revolutionary to rock music. some of his stuff was never heard before at the time.

  • people who say that Ringo was uncreative need to realize that the Beatles played at a time when rock music was still being developed. drumming was still breaking away from jazz at the time so there wasn't as much fancy stuff as there is today. these ignorant critics need to think from a 1960s perspective and not a 2012 perspective

  • @pwnage51 well put....my fav drum parts by him are "She Said She Said" and the fills on "A Day in the Life"...simply superb...oh the drum part on "You won't see me" is great too

  • @matco24 my favorite song by the beatles to play on drums is definitely "she loves you". it's so simple yet so damn fun :D

  • @pwnage51 Ringo played for the song...not to show off, but whtever he did..it sounded right!

  • @pwnage51 People also need to take in consideration feel and dynamics of the playing in regards to the song rather then how many fills did he play at super speeds. Its the same reason Hendrix is considered the best guitarist of all time becuase he moves people with playing and was truly unique as opposed to being a tech wizard with no soul in his playing.

  • the drum on abbey road says all.

  • Anyone who thinks Ringo isn't a great drummer try playing "Come Together" without missing a beat. For a guy who says he never practices until actually playing the songs... he's friggin awesome. By the way mjsokes... you're pretty damn awesome yourself.

  • Absolutely great. Nice work man!

  • Hi, I'm a rock musisian but no percussionist - I just don't do it. Your drumming is ace as far as I'm concerned and it never ceases to amaze me just how drummers perform. I'm off to listen to some Quo now!

  • I'm a drummer and Ringo's fan and I can say that you are an excellent drummer, you've caught Ringo's groove and fillings, awesome!!!!

  • Ringo played exactly what the music called for. When you hear people talking about playing to the song and not just squeezing in your licks that you know, Ringo comes to mind as a fine example. He rarely repeated anything he played because each of The Beatles songs called for something uniquely different from the last. Ringo was a very creative drummer. I can't think of a soul on the planed who would have fit The Beatles any better.

  • DAMN good drumming on this video, BTW...

  • Thanks for this post. I totally agree. Specific, complimentary, driving.

  • Outstanding submitter!

I've been telling anyone who would listen for years that Ringo = awesome. Love that hi-hat work.

  • RINGO MUST BE INDUCTED TO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME !!!

  • @zeromant80 Well the band is....so I'm pretty sure he is.

  • @MrNevillebamshoot Yes, but not as a solo artist (Lennon, McCartney and Harrison got inducted individually) the same case goes for Eric Claptop, his two bands were inducted and himself as a solo artist. If Ringo gets inducted, then The Beatles would be the first band to get all of his members to be also inducted as solo artists...

  • @zeromant80 FYI He already is! ;)

  • @zeromant80 he was, in 1988.

  • why do you play the high hat like that?

  • @gerbile3

Ringo played the hi hat like that

  • @STOBMNT Even though I am a musician, my ear is not quite in tuned as a more experienced musician. with that comment taken into account, is there any different in sound from the traditional playing style?

  • @gerbile3

I cant answer you that question , Im not a drummer I just saw lots of beatles videos

  • listen to "the end" on abbey road. Thats ringo at his best in my opinion

  • that fill at 1:19 is sexy as fuck

  • i love the sound of your snare

  • I think Ringo was great.. he gave what the songs what they needed and nothing more.. and considering how different the songs were that wasn't easy..the Beatles were more concerned, I believe, in making great songs not showing off to other musicians. The great ones make it look easy and Ringo is certainly in that category

  • YOU HAVE AN ANNOYING SNARE.

  • Anyone who knows anything about what a good drummer rally entails, would most certainly agree, as I most certainly do. Charlie Watts, could anyone else come up with the exact right groove for these pieces of work, and that is what a great drummer is. If you want to listen to Flash speed and technical drummers thats all fine andy good, but is it right for the music that goes with it. Nothing worse than a drummer whose a show off. Great Post!!

  • The Beatles were four extraordinaries musicians, composers and singers. Any person that thinks differently is wrong. I am amateur musician too, so I can say: The Beatles were great. Ok, Led Zeppelin maybe could be better as individual talents, but as a band The Beatles were still better. Just listen to them, don't need any more proofs. I reccomend Abbey Road as the best Beatles' album.

  • @Muzikmaniak40 Look, would Ringo be where he is today if he wasn't a member of the Beatles? Of course not! No one is refuting that. I seriously doubt he would have made it in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Rory Storm and The Hurricanes, but people don't love Ringo because of his drumming. It's his likeable personality and wit and his relationship with the other Beatles that made him so special. Ringo was clearly the favorite Beatle.

  • But Back then the Drums were small, a bass a couple symbles, and a few drums, so back then we didnt have much options for drumming notes, but now, we can do what he did but much more with these advanced drumsets, what he did was considered GREAT/AWESOME drumming back then

  • Ringo was perfect for the Beatles. Imagine Charlie Watts or Keith Moon with the Beatles.. just doesnt work.

Another underrated drummer of the British Invasion was Bobby Elliot of the Hollies. He was flashier than Ringo but still tight and tasteful.

  • This is probably one of the simplest beatles songs on the drums. Ringo was not the greatest drummer, but what he had was "the shuffle". That man could shuffle fills like nobody i've ever seen. It happened to be one of those "right places, right times" sort of deals which made them iconic. Don't get me wrong, the Beatles are fantastic, but not the greatest band in the universe.

  • @MatthewAvello They were technically not the best musicians we've heard what the best "technicians"produce, stuff that makes you go "wow" and then no one wants to hear after 5 minutes. The breadth and width of their work and growth both in pushing musical and lyrical boundaries can not be matched by anyone, anyone since. Who can match up to them ?If they are not the greatest then who is?I'm dying to hear this. Who will have the same critical acclaim and impact after 41 years?

  • @okltsply George Martin was the beatles. I fear they wouldn't have been what they were otherwise. I can tell you my favorite bands but I cannot pretend to proclaim the greatest band of all time.

  • @MatthewAvello The Beatles would have been the Beatles with or without George Martin. The Beatles were writing their own songs and playing live before they met the so called, "Fifth Beatle." He was a great match for them as a producer, but to say he was the reason for their success is ridiculous. George Martin would suggest the Beatles record music written by other Artists. It was them that said, no thanks we'd like to record our own songs, and they did. Enough said.

  • @MatthewAvello Then who's the greatest band?

  • @rockinrodney5000 There's no such thing.

  • I totally agree. Perfect restraint, minimalism but what the ear delights in. I learned only the other day Ringo was also left-handed? Two righties, two lefties. Interesting.

  • Yes; he gave space to the other Beatles. You couldn't have all the same variety and subtlety that was the Beatles with Moonie popping all over.

As Ringo says (paraphrase), he is there to give the beat.

  • You forgot to redo the kit left handed as Ringo played, also now towels on the drums?

  • @morninggloryseed Ringo is a lefty but plays as a righty

  • @K3ithM0on Ringo played like a lefty but in the years since, right handed drummers adopted the style , so ringo was one of the few to popularise that playing style :)

  • It seems the prime agenda for many musicians is to further themselves rather than the song.

Ringo's understated but brilliant playing furthered the SONG.

Difference between a hack (even a well-known one) and a musician.

I very much enjoyed this video!

  • @loZoneranger560: Your statement "It seems the prime agenda for many musicians is to further themselves rather than the song" describes the situation perfectly. I have worked as a musician with pros and wannabes. A pro supports the song and the singer. The others only entertain delusions of self-aptitude. The Ringo bashers are of similar substance.

Ringo is perhaps the only individual on the planet who knows what it means to be better than Best.

  • Just goes to show, sometimes, less is truly more. Ringo was a walking metronome. Always in a groove and had that elusive built in clock. It's easy to see why Sir George Martin wanted Ringo in the studio over Pete Best. I'm pretty sure this was recorded before there was a such thing as click tracks in the studio, and he was definitely in a groove like he was drumming on rails. As a bassist, I've worked with some drummers that had that roller coaster timing, and they were hard to work with.

  • @RushFanatic87 By the way... I'm also a huge fan of small 3-4 piece kits. Makes a true percussionist really reach deep for his inner creativeness. And finally... through headphones your kick drum sounds super.

  • @RushFanatic87 I totally agree with your argument about small kits.

  • And of course, he used to do this with extreme ease

  • And why I will never be a decent drummer...

  • Ringo was the rock behind the mass of music. The anchor. Once Paul said they aways had the perfect tempo with Ringo, who also was able to "punish the drums during days" without loosing the base for the rest. And was also a drummer without ego, the exact piece of rithm for the song.

  • this is about the closest view that i can ever get to watching Mr. RiNgO (BeaTLe) StArR performing from above on video! thank u "mjstokes" for demonstrating his legendary techniques, cheers! x0]

  • I'll take Ringo over John Bonaham any day. Why? Because he plays for the song. He has near perfect dynamics. Sometimes all u need is to open up the Hi hat for the chorus. I can't stand drummers who dumb ass loud fills. As a singer song writer "show off" drummers are fucking lame. Restraint and self control is a rare quality in a drummer. take a song like "Tomorrow never Knows", it takes a lot of guts to play a drum pattern like that through out the entire song. No drummer has guts like that.

  • @PopExpo as a singer songwriter i totally quote

  • Great job man!

  • why did ringo do that highhat stroke

  • I've played drums for a long time... I don't think you could get better for this song than what we have just heard...If you think you can do better Do it and post it I would be pleased to hear the result!

  • Ringo is the FIRST rock drummer! Nice job dude that sounded awesome :)

  • @JTRdrum No sane person here thinks Ringo is the best drummer in the world, but the reason I think he was a great drummer is because he could make any drum beat fit any song. Drummers like that are hard to come by

  • @JTRdrum I guess your the final word on drumming so i wont argue, i mean all your videos on here show your talent is so ridiculously high compared to someone who helped change music forever so well done to you mate

  • Ringo was the perfect drummer for the Beatles.

  • saw "Rain" it was excellent, I was completely blown away with the band, who did a great job and the audience who were very diverse. (look it up)

  • I agree, Ringo is VERY underrated. He brought it. Always what was needed for the song, tasty and right. He didn't feel the need to walk on the song, he got BEHIND it.

Listen up, kiddies, that's the drummer's job. To be the MOTOR, not the hood ornament. Leave that to the singer, if he ever shows up for rehearsal, that is...;-)

Having said that, you have a NASTY groove yourself! Made my foot tap instantly and the fills get just chaotic enough. Kit sounds cool too, well done, keep smackin'em!!

  • As an aside, McCartney state the what got Ringo 'The Beatles' gig was that he could play the Latin rock type of pattern featured on 'What'd I Say' by Ray Charles fluidly, with style.

  • Excellent drumming. That's the drummer you want to gig with.

  • Ringo is very creative. Listen to how he approached Ticket To Ride or Rain. He knew how to perfectly compliment a song.

  • they kept ringo for alot of good reasons...

  • i lovvvveeeeee him.

  • I don't know if anyone has suggested it ...but let's see you have a go at 'RAIN' !

  • Loved the Video, Nice Job!

  • Ringo had a feel that was perfect for The Beatles. He had an uncanny knack for when to use the hi hats closed and when they should be played openly or when a ride cymbal with lots of wash should be used instead. His drums were always tuned impeccably and if I am not wrong, he played a lot of that early stuff with that rim shot which just rang out with such musicality. No, Ringo was the greatest of rock drummer (but don't forget his swing feel on stuff like Honey Pie). Very versatile! Love him!

  • Excellent job. Ringo being left handed and playing right handed had a unique approach to his tom fills. So does McCartney.

  • Ringo rules and as Harrison himself said ( no stranger himself to being unappreciated on his instrument ) that Ringo was 'the best backbeat in the business '.

Thanks for championing Ringo on one of their best .

    Great job.

  • Thanx for this kick in the balls, you really did a fine job, what a simplicity still so matching with of course a well crafted song, Makes me think years back I worked with C.W. and tried for many months to immitate he's rythm machine (T.R.808) and always failed till I finaly recorded with him and noticed the simplicity Chris had in the programming...(ps; Chris Whitley in his belgium-years)
