I am a fan of both, but much specially from simon and garfunkel...and from all the meeting i imagined simon and garfunkel having AND van halen having,THIS ONE i would NEVER imagine, hahhaahahah
Not being funny, but of all the songs in the world that don't suit the playing style of EVH, Sound of Silence has to be near the top of the list...what the hell was Simon thinking asking him to play on it? I love EVH, he's incredible....but this was a very odd decision to make
Cause it's Ed you expect to be blown away, but it's not bad. The way that Sammy Hagar described this in his book I expected this to be a major disaster. The piezo sound is not good, but he's not playing bad. Sounds like he's expecting the chords to go somewhere else. It's not a typical progression, that's the case with most of Simon's compositions, and it simply sounds like Ed can't find grounding to travel and make phrases, so he's just unfamiliar. But he's still playing well .
This is Ed, Sammy Hagar mentioned this in his book "Red". Paul Simon tried to learn him the song before they went onstage. Ed was trashed doing blow and told Paul he never had heard of the song "Sound Of Silence", lol. He just couldn't pick up the song and this is the result. Ed's my all time favourite but he never should have done this tune with Simon & Garfunkel... But hey, it's only Rock & Roll but I like it!
@Lempersbram LOL I searched this video after reading about it in Sammy's book, too. Now I"m going to watch the video for "Right Now" so I can see the part Sammy wrote about actually being pissed off during the video shoot.
If that is Ed...and I think it is...He is using the piezo-electric "acoustic" sound from the Parker Nitefly guitar he is playing. This is strange and Ed isn't exactly on top of this one, but if it is him, this is a very interesting document:)
I liked it. the only part that's strange to me is Eddie being on stage with these two. that was a surprise I never would've guessed would happen. but it was awesome. his solos were fine, it just would've sounded better with Ed's distortion. it sounds like they mic'd his guitar the way they do acoustic guitars: right up close to the strings.

I cannot blv that is actually what EVH played........for a lot of reasons.....
even if he'd never heard the song before (sure.....) Eddie can improv over a Dm, C pentatonic blues...come on

Not impressed with EVH(I don't believe it's him)-Paul Simon would be better without that piezo messing everything up.
