there is no more perfect singing than this...the french is impeccable..there is not one single french singer who could claim to sing in english with such style, yet they never stop critizing others who succeed in french...strange ungenerous reaction
This is my second time listening to this recording. So inspiring. She has such a connected, energized, legato line in her breath. Each note leads perfectly balanced into the next with such dynamic intensity. Her crec. and decres. are equisite. Absolutely outstanding!
Your words: "we are here to share knowledge and music" were so right ! You do the most beautiful thing on earth, you sing ! All my hopes and wishes for your success !
I have the dream to listen to you singing "Absence"!!!
Come back, come back my beloved ! Like a flower, far from the sun, The flower of my life is closed Far from your vermilion smile! From here to there, so many campaigns So many cities and hamlets So many small valleys and mountains Will weary the foot of the horses ! Come back, come back my beloved! Like a flower, far from the sun, The flower of my life is closed Far from your vermilion smile.
sorry. but i think u misunderstood me. i want to know the translation not the english VERSION. Coz i want know the meaning of every word in english. and pls calm down with our reply coz we r here to share knowledge and music. thanks
I met Ms Baker at the 1968 or 1969 Aldeburgh festival in England. As I remember, she was singing at a county church, as the festival hall in Snape had burnt down. It was sweltering in the church, so many people retreated to the church grounds during intermission. Ms Baker circulated amongst the throng, and stopped to chat with the (English) people I was with. They introduced me to her; she was very gracious-a lovely lady and a consummate artist. Thank you for providing this wonderful video.
Why should this be faster and more detatched? The whole song is a pleading for the return of the beloved. I doubt we'll hear many comparable or superior readings for some decades if ever.
Stunning.....She is at her best with the quieter moments ......the last "reviens ma bien aimee" is so touching. I have an old vinyl disk (that I would need to dig for) of her singing (maybe with Barbirolli) with the twitches and secondary noises of the orchestra giving less distraction to the beautiful voice.
her a voice is so beautiful, Janet Baker, Denyce Graves, Horne, Shirley Verret, Cossoto, and Troyanos, are the only dramatic mezzos that can truly integrate into their music while singing with a beutiful lyric line.
Her interpretation is amazing, I wish she didn't retire so early.
I too feel it to be on the slow side. Compare, for example, Veronique Gens who is outstanding in this song cycle. J.Baker is a consumate artist but I prefer her in, say, Ein Deutsches Requiem. hanks Jean - Claude.
Oh My God! She just reduced me to tears. I've been working through the whole cycle. It's all wonderful, but this was the most beautiful and moving so far
What makes Janet Baker so mesmerizing a performer is that she has no desire to show herself off but rather makes herself a perfect instrument for expressing the music.
What a song! What a composer!

Come back, come back my beloved !
Like a flower, far from the sun,
The flower of my life is closed
Far from your vermilion smile!
Between our hearts, what a distance!
such an amount of space between our kisses!
Oh bitter fate ! Oh hard absence !
Oh great unappeased desires !

hello does anyone have english translatin of this song.. coz im goign to sing this on my jury exam.. Thanks
lanz2284 3 years ago
Please, do not sing that song using english words instead of french !!! Dame Janet Baker is english, she sings in french !
The french word for your intention is "sacrilège" !
Any jury should refuse such a mistake !

Beautiful. Perhaps, could be a little faster and more detached, but who can argue with such singing.
