Reminds me of when the local tavern decided to put a breathalizer in the bar area...the patrons (while drunk one night) thought it would be hilarious to have a 'tavern BAC record' and every person to get the breathalizer would write their name and the BAC number next to it on a dry erase board put up right next to the breathalizer. LOL. To this day I'm not sure anyone ever won anything though...
Cenk is so immature for his age. He acts like an 18 y/o sometimes. Getting a girl drunk so you can possibly have sex with her is a terrible thing to do. Girls need to be a lot more cautious about the situations they get into. Yes, it lowers your inhibitions, but does it mean you really want to have sex? A guy forced me to drink for the first time in my life, then he shoved me against a wall and raped me. He also choked me. If I weren't drunk perhaps I would have fought back harder.
@CyborgNinja7 Well that was just rape. It has nothing to do with the idea of losing inhibitions with alcohol. The point and the fact is that many women do like to sleep around sometimes, but they don't want to think of themselves as emotionless sluts so they need an outlet to blame loss of control, and alcohol works.
A lotta people say having sex on ecstasy will ruin sex, because it's so great that when you have regular sex again, it doesn't feel the same and is more boring. I, however, got head while I was rolling, and well.. Still love it, drugs or no.
Addiction's not a weakness, it's a disease (it's in the DSM-IV under "chemical dependency") that literally changes the way your brain works. I would know, because I am a recovering addict, and I could go on all day about opiod receptors, dopamine & serotonin, the genetic basis for addiction, social and environmental factors, and so on. My ex studied neuroscience, as well, she could go on for even longer. It's tremendously complicated and does not deserve to be reduced to "weakness".
Oh, I agree -- criminalizing drugs essentially criminalizes the disease of addiction, and *that* is simply terrible -- Hell, it's a human rights violation. You can't lock people in prison for exhibiting symptoms (ie having) a disease.

You can break college students into two groups. Those that were serious, didn't fail a class. Then those who went their to party, fail, and sometimes drop out. College shouldn't be pushed on an entire nation. Only those professions that really need it.

I understand making fun of the researchers because it's fairly obvious stuff, but one still needs to do the research so that there is a legitimate scientific study to look at rather than just a "he said she said" type situation. Some things that may seem obvious may not be that way, and vice versa.

To everyone advocating a lower drinking, you should probably look into the medical research that has been done as to WHY the legal age to drink alcohol is 21.
At age 21, as opposed to 18, the human body (most importantly the brain) is basically done growing (it differs from person to person, but as a general baseline the age is 21). Since alcohol has been 100% proven to damage the body, doesn't it make perfect sense for one to wait until the body is done growing to start destroying it?
@Andy180084 The legal drinking age in France is 18, actually. Iceland's minimum age is 20. I have no idea where you read that 14 was a legal age for alcohol consumption in England.
@ShrougerNite I am an English/United States dual citizen living in the US. The drinking age is 18 in the UK, 16 if you purchase food with it (to absorb the booze I guess). It was 14 last I visited if you buy food (4 years ago) but apparently they changed that.
@TerminalRhinoVirus Fun fact... mental development peaks at 26, not 21. Obviously, the brain is still developing at 21; the arguement that 21 is a better age really makes litle sense. Individuals who drink in smaller quantities as a result of a lower drinking age will suffer less brain-damage than their 21 year old counterparts, who are themselves still developing.
I don't drink or smoke pot, but I feel safer with a group of high potheads anytime over drunks. At least high people can maintain their coordination and drive or function in class. I don't understand why alcohol is legal, but pot isn't. Is there something I don't know about pot? Alcohol seems to make people far more troubled.
I have a friend from another country and she told me "You're an adult when you are 18 here, right? But cannot drink until you are 21..it makes no sense" and she is SO RIGHT

"College administrators want to curb college drinking"
Here's an idea: MAKE CLASSES HARDER
I think that everyone who want to go to school and seriously study should be able to. At the same time, if people are just going to drink, what are they doing there?
Also in the news, republicans have succeeded in making Obama look bad, market volatility is improving by increments of shitloads, and new research indicates that things get wet when it rains. Good night.
The Hawthorne effect is a form of reactivity whereby subjects improve or modify an aspect of their behavior being experimentally measured simply in response to the fact that they are being studied, not in response to any particular experimental manipulation.
I like Cenk's drawn out enunciation of the phrase, "of course" and have adopted it into my own speech patterns. They say imitation is the most sincere form of flattery and it may very well be true. I can't relate to this story because drinking is a genetic predisposition that I don't have, now pass the joint.
tell them this...excessive drinking makes you gain ALOTTT of weight, makes your skin look dry and like leather, thins your lips, makes sex less pleasurable, ect.
I'm not in college I'm 18 and I'm in the army, I have to say college bimbos are the easiest out there my friends who are in college invite me to parties all the time and I have to say it's a guarantee you will get laid hell even the so called "un-cool" kids get some all the time.
I'm in college, and I have to say it's somewhat difficult. Everyone at my college drinks all the time, has random hook ups, and tattoos. I can't stand it. All girls are sluts are college, though I don't blame their body. I blame the stress put on them to be rebellious in college and act like a slut. I fucking hate college girls, they all look, and act the same. If I break up with my girlfriend while in college, then I'm gonna wait till after college to find another girl.
My theory is that kids here in the US drink and party like they do because they are trained to at early ages. They have early on been subconsciously prepared to accept this as their role and therefore know what to do when they reach this situation as an adult. Alcohol is known so far as the best tool to feed to the masses (slaves). It really is the poison of the serpent.
You have to show pictures of corroded livers, mangled bodies and then back that up with all the oozy effects of STDs that college students get. Why don't they ever show that but we get clubbed seals instead!
Also, take a cue from Catholic U to have single sex dorms.
Breathalizers are like a carrot on the end of a stick that you will never reach. Well I guess if you die, then that is your biggest number and try not to go that high again.
Want to lower college drinking statistics? Lower the drinking age. Seems counter-intuitive? Well 1) doing something illegal makes it more fun 2) once your legal, you go to a bar that is more expensive and monitored by staff 3) When you have drink illegally you go to go to parties where you aren't moving as much and drinking a lot more.
The U.S. needs to get with the times....and focus on the good research that's already been done!
My daughter just returned from a semester studying in England. She was pleasantly surprised that the freshman were not over the top drunken idiots like US college students. College here is the first chance for US students to drink and answer to no one. In Europe they are not completely new to drinking when they enter University. There is your answer, stop wasting money on such obvious things.
thank god i never gave a fuck about being cool and popular. now i have my degree and i did not waste no time in dumb parties. i do have a life, i dont need to do crazy shit.
@saprissa9 Cool has nothing to do with it. College is your last chance to be responsible for only yourself most people get. Twenty five years and a raised family later my wife and I are even more certain that our crazy college days were awesome. Too bad you wasted your chance.
Maybe the US should pull its head out of its ass and look around at the rest of the civilized world. Making it a crime to drink (3 years AFTER you can vote btw) and putting such strict rules forces kids to break the law and also binge drink on weekends. Look at Canada and Europe where the drinking age is 18-19 and not strictly enforced. Much lower drinking and driving stats, and abuse of alcohol by minors.
@Fenixx117 Umm...speaking as a Canadian the drinking age IS enforced. The only place that has a reputation for the legal drinking age "being only a suggestion" is the province of Quebec and that's not really true. Europe is a diffrent case though.
@kuziamimi So am I. It's just not as fucked up as the US but still not as progressive as Europe. And when I graduated at 17 along with most others safe grad was allowed by the cops and you can drink at the same age you vote, so it's not so fucked up like 21 or in the retard parts of the country where it is 19 just to piss people off.
In ancient Greece, drinking was part of a debate, in other words wine would make you emphasize your point and vocalize more efficiently. Nowadays it's who is more moronic. Not good.
Reminds me of the periodic stories about "binge drinking." Seems like it becomes "news" every couple of years that students actually drink to get drunk---who knew? Well, obviously the media didn't know.
I wonder if any of them ever went to college. if they did they didn't have fun.
College kids drink to not think about their college debt.

I think that everyone who want to go to school and seriously study should be able to. At the same time, if people are just going to drink, what are they doing there?
coopclauson 6 months ago
The only way you can stop students from drinking is by letting them do drugs.

If I break up with my girlfriend while in college, then I'm gonna wait till after college to find another girl.
phisylus 6 months ago
My theory is that kids here in the US drink and party like they do because they are trained to at early ages. They have early on been subconsciously prepared to accept this as their role and therefore know what to do when they reach this situation as an adult. Alcohol is known so far as the best tool to feed to the masses (slaves). It really is the poison of the serpent.
activistapress 6 months ago
You have to show pictures of corroded livers, mangled bodies and then back that up with all the oozy effects of STDs that college students get. Why don't they ever show that but we get clubbed seals instead!
Also, take a cue from Catholic U to have single sex dorms.

Breathalizers are like a carrot on the end of a stick that you will never reach. Well I guess if you die, then that is your biggest number and try not to go that high again.
cowhunter101 6 months ago
And we need warning pictures on packs of smokes? *rolls eyes*
It's more socially acceptable to be a drunk in this country than a smoker.

There is your answer, stop wasting money on such obvious things.

saprissa9 6 months ago
@saprissa9 Cool has nothing to do with it. College is your last chance to be responsible for only yourself most people get. Twenty five years and a raised family later my wife and I are even more certain that our crazy college days were awesome. Too bad you wasted your chance.
finerbiner 6 months ago
Maybe the US should pull its head out of its ass and look around at the rest of the civilized world. Making it a crime to drink (3 years AFTER you can vote btw) and putting such strict rules forces kids to break the law and also binge drink on weekends. Look at Canada and Europe where the drinking age is 18-19 and not strictly enforced. Much lower drinking and driving stats, and abuse of alcohol by minors.
Fenixx117 6 months ago
@Fenixx117 Umm...speaking as a Canadian the drinking age IS enforced. The only place that has a reputation for the legal drinking age "being only a suggestion" is the province of Quebec and that's not really true. Europe is a diffrent case though.
kuziamimi 6 months ago
@kuziamimi So am I. It's just not as fucked up as the US but still not as progressive as Europe. And when I graduated at 17 along with most others safe grad was allowed by the cops and you can drink at the same age you vote, so it's not so fucked up like 21 or in the retard parts of the country where it is 19 just to piss people off.

It's a product of being overprotected in high school. I got most of it out of my system in high school and took is somewhat easy in college.
