Yesterday myself and my crew were traveling eastbound from Field to Calgary with a 8,000 feet potash train, we were about 500 feet away from entering the lower tunnel and we noticed a family of mountain goats hanging around the entrance. Assuming the goats were looking for shelter or a little curious we blew our whistle and the goats decided to run up the Mountain side. I'm sure glad they decided to go up the mountain instead of going in to it.
Some day I hope to ride through the tunnels on the Rocky Mountaineer passenger train from Calgary to Vancouver. Great videos Stu. Hope you had a wonderful time here.
A couple of years ago, my dad and I went cross country skiing right up to the tunnel. We were fortunate enough to be able to catch two trains going through. One going down and another one coming up. It was just amazing!
@Rocketboy1950 Thanks Rod. This is the Lower Spiral, there is another one on the mountain behind me, but the access road to the vantage point was still blocked from the winter. Next time I go back I will try and get this shot. Stu
This sight can only be appreciated with long freight trains. Passenger trains are too short to have both ends visible at opposite ends of the tunnel simultaneously.
i was there a month after you, 17th of july exactly LOL what a coincidence! but i could be wrong it might have bean the 16th lol. never the less, its a crazy-awsom place those spiral tunnels eh! all that area of B.C. and Alberta are nice, from Okanagan to Smithers, and Jasper to Banff. makes me hate living in
Edmonton, so far away from those places but the up side is theres more railway in the area lol
What an amazing sight Stu, if I tried this on my attic layout the wagons would just fall over, the laws of Physics baffles me!...Thanks for sharing these wonderful videos...Bob
@robmasterman It amazed me. I read on another vid of the tunnels a comment from a driver, he said it was good when his loco was in the upper spiral (behind me), but he could see the back of his train in the lower spiral below him. It does boggle the mind if you think too hard. Stu
@RailfreightWales Thanks Justin. The Upper Spiral was behind me, further uphill, but the road to the viewing point was closed. If I go back to Canada this is one place worth visiting again - spend a bit more time there. Stu

@ajpcat Thanks. Going thru this on the Rocky Mountaineer would be great, maybe one for me to do when I come back to Canada in the future.

@theGUYwho1 Thanks for the comment. I live in the UK, so living in Edmonton would be a dream for me - with all this within a (long) drive. Thanks Stu
