  • I have many reasons to be thankful for the time frame my life has been spent in. John Denver is one of those reasons.

  • John Denver was the most down to earth guy, his songs will last forever!

It´s very sad that he´s gone too soon! His voice goes straight to heart & he really had something to say! RIP!

  • Wow where can I find some singing plants? :D

  • i remember my great grandma and grandma sang this song to me when i was little.

  • Lovely!

  • great pic cheers, hunter

  • What a wonderful music video. I adore the Garden song. John Denver is so beautiful and lovely. He sings it very nicely. It is a good fit, because John has a bunch of songs about nature and the country. The stongest reminder is when he sang about the crow, and that he is as free as it. It is a lot like his songs about eagles. The plants puppets are adorable!

  • I d have considered myself luckier if i met this man than any other person.. what a peaceful and beautiful song... my only regret is that people who cannot sing and modify voices and sing crappy music have made more of a name than him...but then who really cares for "love and peace"...

  • I LOVE this song!! Thanks for posting it!!!

  • Somehow the term "wholesome" has achieved a negative connotation. Unless you're performing music about sex or making a lot of noise then your music is perceived as lame or soft. Statler and Waldorf's take at the end is how most people today would react to this song which is a disgrace.

  • @GBev2K Totally concur. And don't you DARE get me started on the Stooges.

  • I LOVE this song!!! Haven't heard it since I was about 4.

  • *Snore* What did i miss.. *Snore* Zzzzzzzzzzz...

  • This song is so sweet. I sing it to my nieces and nephews when we're out in the garden every year.

Now they sing it back. lol

  • I am Thai .Now i live in Thailand and i have still missed John Denver.

  • Why is he growing canadian thistles in his garden?

  • from an episode of minecraft made me thick of this lol

  • This song always touches my heart! John Denver and Jim Henson were both wonderful souls!

  • John Denver. Putting disturbing lyrics to catchy tunes since 1973.

Of course you can't forget the talking plants.

  • @MrJackal22 "Disturbing"? You find gardening and taking care of the earth "disturbing"? Well, I'd have to say that I find THAT disturbing. If all you're going to do is criticize John Denver and Jim Henson, two of the most wonderful people to walk on this earth which you don't seem to care about too much, then what the heck are you doing watching this video? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me... Oh, and the song was written by David Mallett. Get your facts straight.

  • @jessiemcmessy Whoa, easy there tiger. Never said that gardening was disturbing... I also never said that John Denver wrote this song. I was watching this video because my friend had never heard this song, and I find it utterly amusing. Get YOUR facts straight.

  • @MrJackal22 I apologize for jumping on your case like that. That was rude of me. I have a tendency to lash out and ask questions later. Sorry.

  • @jessiemcmessy Hey, all's well that ends well. Shalom! =)

  • <33333333333333333333333333333

  • I will forever miss your sweet voice, you gave me many happy hours and inspiration back in the day ***<3*** I love you John

  • Jd was the best

  • Diappointed this was listed as Grandma's Feather Bed but wasn't

  • Thanks, JD....

  • I raised my kids in the 70s and the muppet show was a big deal in our house - any time john was on was a treat. what a great time to be alive and raising kids. thanks, john and muppets. make sure you listen to "poems, prayers, and promises". amen

  • lol

  • We are doing that song for our Graduation!! OMG

  • I always loved John Denver music. So much that I have taught myself not only to sing many of them but to play them on a Native American flute.

    The Muppet's are bad either.

On the issue of the values we as a society shows. The arts show them will. the empire with its death and destruction is sadly in command while the values of love and caring for both Mother ear and each other are not cherished. May the music of John Denver live forever.

  • Niccce socks in sandals man! :) Love this video

  • He has such a wonderfull soft steady voice! Just a guitar, a choir and some muppets is all it take to make me smile from my toes up!

  • oh my gosh...I had to sing this song in Grade One and 11 years later I still know all the words :D Thank you for posting this! This honestly just made my day!!!!

  • i love this song it reminds me of my garden and to always shower with love

  • I miss you so much, John. Every note you sing and every chord you strum speaks the very mood of my soul. I don't even have to open my mouth to say how I feel, I just put one of your songs on and there it is. The exact emotion deep in my soul. I love you, you incredibly amazing man with the voice of an angel.

    Rest In Peace

    I love you!

  • what a wonderful man.

    nuff said.

  • Just miss John Denver sooo much. He gave us all a better life with his songs and singing! LS

  • Oops, my apologies!

  • Wow, I miss him, his music, and the peaceful feeling I got when I heard his music. What a loss.

  • A true minstrel, what talent he had!

  • The singing plants went on to appear in the background in the off-Broadway production of "Little Shop of Horrors".

  • Very nice bit of entertainment. Something the whole family can watch and enjoy. Always loved John's singing. Thanks for posting.

  • Classic much-covered song by the great singer-songwriter David Mallett. And who better to cover it than John Denver and the Muppets? Seriously, there were so many wonderful musical performances on this show (as well as on "Sesame Street")!

  • I miss this man...

  • my kids grew up in the 70s, we watched the muppets religeously - what a great time it was. i miss it.

  • @maryspinker I was one of those 70s kids, Im so greatful to have been a child in those times, it was a great time to be a kid:)

  • @maryspinker born in 77 I came in at the end of th era. Man I would give anything to go back in time and live through the whole thing.

  • I had long forgotten this from my childhood. I adore JD and I'm so pleased you posted this thank you so much.

  • This song brings back so many amazing memories of my childhood. My mom would always play his CD and everytime this song came on i would get so excited and me and my mom would sing it together. best years of my life (so far).

  • I love this song!!! And the video is dead cute!! Thanks so much for posting!!! He´s missed so dearly!!!

  • John Denver has got to be the nicest person of all time.

  • @cchasler mr rodgers ftw

  • @cchasler Indeed, He left us too soon..... May he rest in peace

  • John Denver and the Muppets, a perfect combination. What a fun and nice person he was. I never met him but some of my students did when our school choir sang back up for him several years ago. They commented later that it was a real pleasure to work with him. I told them that I was not surprised. What a kind soul. I miss him. Thanks so much for sharing.

  • I love John Denver I'm going to name one of my nephews after him you are very much loved John Denver and your voice will never be forgotten

  • His joyous songs of life and nature will live on as a rainbow lives in the rain.Take care ADonovan43

  • Nobody comes along to replace these great guys, and their work is, like many have said, absent from the radio and tv.

John Denver and Jim Henson...what a team. They are missed

  • Such a wonderful man, humanitarian, and environmentalist. He died way too early :( This generation hardly knows his name. Shame Shame. We Miss You John :(

  • I loved this episode - Haha I think I still have it on timelife video!

  • Dear Disney, release Season 4 on DVD already!

  • @b4ifly2paradise Years ago I lucked into a dvd that had both the Harry Belefonte episode and the John Denver episode...my 2 favorites on on DVD...dont know if its in print anymore but you might get lucky on Amazon....

  • John Denver music is awesome. i long for the more wholesomeness of the past.

  • I miss him.

Just so great. Just so beautiful and soulful.

My heart is so much bigger and gentler because of Mr Denver.

    Tears of joy brother John.

    Thank you.

  • @elrip1 I miss him so much....great song writer and singer....sang from the heart and soul....

  • RIP, dear John. Gone too soon, taken home. When God made you, he threw away the mold.

  • Gone too soon - John & Jim

  • Is it just me, or did John Denver look like a Muppet?! He could have been one of them. He is missed a lot. Heaven has some pretty sweet music being sung since he got there.

  • @jstats13 well, he does look a little like scooter.

  • Now Inch by Inch!!! Love this fella - sing this wee song every time I do me gardens!!!

  • Beautiful song. John was and is the most purest singer who really loved music

  • The Allotment ong, by the Muppet, good song for all allotment owners

  • I will be naming my first son Denver (and incidentally, if I have another- he will be James...so that I can call him Jim. John Denver and Jim Henson are the two single most respectable/admirable/inspirational men I could ever wish for my sons to be like).

I can't wait to grow a garden with my little Denver, or to go camping. Or to sing "Every one of us" every candlelit Christmas.

  • This just brings up soo many memories!!! Every Sunday was "Dukes of Hazard" and "The Muppet Show"!!! Is this version on cd anywhere? I looked for it on itunes, couldn't find it....would love to put it on my ipod!!!!

  • vote by vote speech by speech gotta get obama impeeched

  • How sweet! You can tell John really had fun singing with the plants. I sing this song every spring when I'm planting my flowers. RIP John Denver and thanks for the beautiful music.

  • @4theluvofpete JD,s was the Muppets favotie guest, he act so naturally around the puppets ans singin fruits, almost anyone else was selfaware,JD however was not. haha, gotta love the guy ;-)

  • Every time I hear this song, I just touches my heart so much. It is so wholesome and peaceful, i just start balling lol. I'm not an emotional guy either.

  • I remember this song way back in Kindergarten and John Denver singing it is just so right. You have to amid that despite the silliness of the plants, its a sweet segment.

Now lets all get out there and do some planting.

  • @thesagebrushkid haha!

    ;0)

  • Lovely :)))

  • There is such a warmth and sweetness to John Denver . . . so sad that he was taken from us so early.

  • thank you so mucg fir this song. my grandpa used to sing this to me befire he passed. every time i was sad and home sick he played this song and it cheered ne up! thank you sooooo much because im sure if my grandpa were here today hed be playing this song for years to come!

  • @brynne348 how sweet thanks for sharing the memory!!

  • Aww! I sung this as a little kid in kindergarden! Im 13 and I started humming it and i can't get it out of my head

  • Yeah, but did HE have singing plants?

  • I sing this wonderful song w/a school program "Singing BOOKS!" which tours the NYC area. It never fails to connect w/young children & teachers alike. :-) More info. can be found in "RISE UP SINGING" incl a parody "Anti-Garden Song": "Slug by slug, weed by weed - my garden's got me really teed. All the insects love to feed upon my tomato plants. Sunburned face, scratched up knees, my kitchens choked w/zucchinis. I'm shoppin @ the A&P next time I get a chance."

  • Nigga this gay

  • No fair. My garden never sings with me. What am I doing wrong?

  • close yer eyes and imagine John sittin there too! that shud help ( and dream he nae left us)

  • trying sing to them first

  • Oh God, I'm dying!!! He is sooo adorable!!! I wanna meet his clone, a few decades younger!!!!

    A+++++

  • Love this song today as well as when I saw it on the Muppet Show. RIP John. Hard to believe that Monday the 12th makes 12 years since the world lost you and your amazing voice and talent. You live on through your music and fans.. We love and muss you....

  • People look at me weird when they hear me playing John Denver's music. It's sad that the beautiful, wholesome things this man devoted his life to seem to be largely absent from today's society. There seems to be an endless supply of money for weapons and war, yet our National Park Service is severely underfunded year after year.

  • @bsteinagel rest asure sthere still a lot of JD fand around the world. DO you know there is a ned 5 disc dvd out? JD live around the world, with some specials. For some video,s go to JohnDenverArchives

  • @bsteinagel I guess it's because parks don't really make for a great source of petroleum. :(

  • @bsteinagel Please keep playing John Denver. Do it for yourself and for all the magnificent things that he sang for. Besides my father there is little people who I know that can enjoy John Denver's inspirational work. But for me, I just feel blessed for being able to admire his music.

  • @bsteinagel There's nothing whatsoever weird about you Bsteiinagel.. It's the world that's vile .. not you ..Go on loving John , I will

  • @bsteinagel well im sorry for my lazy eye lol. But serisouly im just a kid and i think denver was a great artist, his music if fun for the most part, but has an almost relaxing feel to it

  • @bsteinagel you just hit the nail on the head! I stick by John Denver, because he had such a pure, innocent heart. I have been uplifted SO MANY TIMES, by his music. I have so many memories of listening to his music, while driving up to Alaska, and listening to country roads....watching this little video with the little girl I took care of...-the national forests are in great danger from the current administration--they plan to take away protection of forests.Defenders of Wildlife have a petition

  • @WildAlaskanBlossom

Amen brother! I am a conservative/libertarian, and I appreciate John Denver's open and honest embrace of life and nature.

He was an awesome musician and a wonderful human being

  • @KSilverfiddle I thank you *ahem--I'm a sister, not brother** :) I am a strange mix--I don't really fit in a sterotype--I am conservative, as well as want to protect the wild lands and animals. I am a human rights activist, and was saddended when the current administration didn't sign the ban on anti-personall landmines that Princess Di so championed as a part of HALO trust. It has hurt so many! Bush didn't sign this important document etither.

  • @bsteinagel ---well said....John'd be proud of you......

  • @bsteinagel so true. things of beauty, nature, anything gentle or peaceful, is laughed at and labeled as 'gay', and ridiculed. hopefully the tide will change with the next generation...

  • @bsteinagel I love John Denver too! Love his songs, his love of nature and aeroplane.... So sad when he died (or shall we say, when he "fly away"?). Thanks for posting this song with the Muppets.... Will be my gardening song now...

  • this brings back memories from kindergarten. i can even remember the hand motions we did with this song

  • Props to Dave Mallett for writing this wonderful song....

  • Hear Hear.

  • John isn unfairly ostracized by many of the masses, but he has some of the most timeless songs of all time. Many of us still miss you, John

  • what so awesome about it all is that we go back years to childhood, and the fact you can watch and enjoy anytime you'd like. Thanks for sharing.

  • I have been searching for this online for a long time. We have all of the Muppet Shows on DVD, and my daughter and I watch weekly. I have always wanted to share this with my friends..now I can! I love the Muppets and John Denver!

  • This episode of The Muppet Show is what introduced me to John Denver. For years, I never listened to any of his other songs until about five years after he died in his plane crash. I think that John Denver has some great songs, which have ended up being some of my favorite country music songs. For any country singer who has sung about the rocky mountains or any countrysides of the U.S.A., John Denver was, and still is, a unique country singer.

  • I remember watching this as a kid. Loved it then, STILL love it! What a treasure to have this to call up anytime I want to!

  • This show is WAY before my time, but I love it. And I love this episode, and this song. He's an inspirational man. Rest In Peace, John Denver.

  • Thank you for posting this song. I hadn't heard it in years and it was a sweet memory for me.

  • I love John Denver. RIP we miss you.

  • I can hardly wait to share this song with my grandchild.

  • I love this song, and John Denver has been my favorite since the early 1970s!! This is just the BEST version of the Garden Song!! Love it!!!

  • /A favorite that is corny, I know, but if this is how we lived would we be worried about Global Warming??

  • I don't think it's corny at all... well, except for how corn grows inch by inch, row by row! I like the way you think.

  • Totally awesome!

  • I love the singing watermelon - i want one.

  • OMG. We sung this song at Outdoor School! LOL, I just got back from ODS. Now this song makes me all emotional, because we all sung this at campfire.

  • Lovely song John sings here!

  • Perfect Combination °_° John and the Muppets. Greetings from Germany.

    Mario

  • i cannot believe you just said that! john denver is absolutely AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!

  • Such a sweet, gentle song about nature!

  • This song "The Garden Song," and the other song by John Denver, which is also sung on The Muppet Show; "Grandma's Feather Bed," are both on the John Denver: Country Roads Collection 4-Disc CD set. I'm glad that I purchased that CD set a couple years ago for a good sale price. For any John Denver fans, that CD collection is worth owning. Other John Denver albums I own are Windsong, Rocky Mountain High, Poems Prayers and Promises, Autograph, It's About Time, and Songs for America.

  • Yes, John is so tender here. Love his Muppets stuff!

  • He was so sweet in this clip. Just love him

  • I loved singing this song to my children when they were babies.

  • "Someone" keep them safe below? Sheesh...I'm not religious, but I somehow don't get insulted if the word "god" is sung in a folk song.

  • ya it is on jd's cd called a voice for america and one season 4 dvd or the muppets show I own neither unfortunally

  • Man is made of dreams and bones

  • but also very realistic about the problems of pellusion etc

  • "Feel the need to grow my own cause the time is close at hand" reef

  • Gotta love the muppets!

  • miss him too!!

  • The song was original written by Dave Mallett.

  • Oh my god. I totally remember this. I used to love this song. Never knew it was called "The Garden Song". I thought it was called inch by inch. Did Pete Seeger write this or did John. By the way if I was singing in a garden and my plants started singing with me I would get the hell out of there quick.

  • as flameguy55 mentioned, this was originally done by a folk artist from Maine by the name of Dave Mallet, he is a great artist, it just happens this song became extremely popular and has been covered by many people hundreds of times

  • Thanks for the information. I thought it was either Pete Seeger or John Denver but then I saw a video of Pete Seeger performing this and he said it was taught to him by some guy from Maine.

  • wat is the name of this song

  • inch by inch

  • I LOVE THIS SONG

  • I love this song. I miss JD.

  • I will never look at a vegetable the same! I have loved this song for years. I didn't know he did this tune with the muppets until I saw it here on You Tube. Thanks for posting it!

  • He was such a special person. I don't think his music will ever 'go out of style'. It came from the heart..his heart. I remember singing this song with my grandaughter when she was five. Thanks for the memories.

  • those tinted glasses shouldn't be working indoors why r John?

  • Because he's made of awesome

  • Hannah, these are a kind of glasses called Transition lenses.

They're clear, regular eyeglasses indoors but in bright sunlight, the lenses go dark and turn into sunglasses . My mum had some. It can be very hard to get sunglasses to fit over prescription specs,so these can be an easier option.

They were new & trendy in 1978.

the bright studio lights would have made John's glasses go dark.

But I agree, while such specs are practical in RL,they're not a good choice for tv & hid his lovely eyes.

  • John Denver was the only artist on the Muppets who related to them as if they were living beings. If John believes they're real, that's good enoh for me!:-)

  • what is that blue thing around John's neck?

  • I think it's a shell necklace.He wore it alot about 77-80.

  • Rest in Peace John Denver.

  • i wasn't even alive during the time his music was out, but he was a great singer, with really calming music. too bad he's dead...

  • I loved this show back then and still do. Especially pieces like this that are so SWEET. You don't see anything SWEET on TV nowadays (except maybe SuperPets).

  • Thank U

  • Thanks for posting!

  • The plants are kinda comical. :)

J.D. really knows how to sing. Lovely song.

  • So awesome. Great song by a great musician and singer.

  • YThis is the greastest song can u postt more of my idol John with the muppets plz?

  • this is my favorite jd song and thanks 4 posting this of my idol

  • Very great!
