I learnt the bass to this about a week ago, using guitar pro, and only now I've decided to listen to the "Master" at work - I can actually play this better than Newsted O.o I'd feel ashamed, If his lines weren't still genius!
This is one of the meatiest bass sounds i've heard. It's a crime it didn't make it to the recording & those responsible(you know who you are) should stand in trial in Nuremberg!
jason is my fav bassist out of the 3. first of all cliff is awsome but he plays too much like a guitarist. in other words he is to awsome. and rob is really cool but he doesnt fit in with metallica but he sounds awsome on death magnet. the thing with him he is too goofy. the reason why i luve jason is because he has the best groove. i say he is sooo talented. he doesnt have to use blues scales to sound good. he is just talented that way. look at my friend o0f misery, king nothing.
I think part of the reason people were so irritated by Justice's lack of bass was because everybody was HYPER-AWARE that Cliff Burton had just died. They wanted to hear the guy who was replacing one of the most respected bass players in the world at the time, but they couldn't, because they utterly buried his signal.
Ultimately, it's more proof upon the great big pile of proof that Metallica understood thrash intimately, but not the fans.
@LuchoMazzeo the main reason jason's bass sounds like this is that he has it set up so that the strings rattle against the frets when he's playing. on the bridge of the bass there are hex-screws that adjust the height of the strings at the bridge.
In regard to the whole 'Picks vs. Fingers' debate: Fingers are cool, but in a recording situation, you really have to have a lot of control in order to make it sound good. Picks really clean up the sound and make difficult passages much easier to execute. Trust me, I just finished making an album. Btw, does anyone know which bass Jason used on this?

That may be correct, but when I listen to Cliffs bass lines I can clearly hear all the guitar riffs in his playing. @MikeVxable because both are different instruments. The electric guitar traces its origins from classical guitar, whereas the electric bass guitar comes from the upright bass, which is played with fingers only. Neither of them used picks originally. Picks are conventional for most of guitar, but in bass should be used when a different sound, tone and attack is sought, NOT when the player is just lazy or incapable of playing fast with fingers only.
@MikeVxable it's generally acceptable to use a pick on the recordings, but i'd be shamed to use it on lives..after all almost all metallica songs can be played easily with fingers..anyway, taste is taste so... \m/
@MikeVxable uuuhhhh because bass is different than guitar...... anyway to me bass sounds heavier when played with fingers. And it would be too easy with a pick :P
@MikeVxable the tune (for metal) can be really heavy with fingers, pick sounds nice too. It comes up to the bassist's choice. I don't like using the pick, but if a bassist plays well with i don't see why don't use it.
im gonna settle this right now. A REAL bass player knows when to use a pick and when to use his/her fingers. it all depends on the music style. this statement has only a slight gray area, if you're playing smoke on the water with a pick then you need some more practice.
@NytroMetal I was trying to be sarcastic, and I obviously failed :P
As far as I know, they lowered the bass as a part of a "test" of initiation to see how much he could take (a test that lasted 15 years ._.) and that was, obviously charged with the anger produced by Cliff's death.
My opinion, not establishing anything as THE opinion, just speaking my mind ^^
Before hearing these tracks i GREATLY underestimated Jason as a bass player. Plus his sound is sick as fuck! If I had his rig from this album, and played with my fingers with ym infamously brutal attack itd sound phat as fuck !
Rob kind of looks like he belongs to Korn more than Metallica.. Yes he does contribute to the band. Yes he is a good bassist. He is unique.
Just like Cliffs immense stamina and songwriting and ability to play fast with guitars. Just like Jasons look and ferocity when playing and downright musical ability.
To be quite honest, I do not approve of the arguments about who was the greatest bassist of Metallica.
In my personal opinion, I believe Cliff was the best bassist ever born, but each bassist, whether they play with fingers or a pick, are great in their own right.
I apologise for this, but I get sick of hearing arguments all the time.
@stonecoldcrazy32 glad you understand it dude, alot people would probably trash talk you into agruements liek this alot, but i respect what you say, becaus ewell everyone has their opinions..
agree or disagree i dont care (my opinion) Cliff was the heart of metallica in the 80s. Jason was a great replacement and he followed metallica till what? 2003? now they have Rob which is better than Jason and is the closest they can get to a bassist that could do what Cliff did
Just listened to the song on my media player and synced this up with it. All I can say is, fucking brutal! Just proves to me that Jason was so much better for Metallica then Rob. Rob has some tasty stuff on DM, no doubt, but its honestly nothing Jason couldn't have played. You can argue that all Jason's doing here is copying the guitars but the track has so much power and aggression and when properly added to the song it adds so much. Its a feeling I just don't get when I hear Rob's bass lines.
yeah but how does that apply when Jason's bass was turned down so much on the mix?
i mean it sounds good for when they played the Justice stuff live, but i mean on all the stuff on the black album and after, he really dint contribute that much.
plus when playing all of the old stuff on kill em all and ride the lightning and master of puppets, rob could play it so much better with ease than jason ever could and rob uses his fingers while jason used a pick
@lildrummerboy4rmhell playing with a pick does not determine how much skill u have, jus like finger pickin doesnt mean ur a good bass player.now rob is a good bassist no doubt, but still its not like hes played anything jason couldnt play just as easy.plus jason brought an energy n intensity to metallica that u dont see wit rob,rob hasnt really contributed much to metallica yet.yeah jason didnt bring much but its not like they would let him.while rob hasnt even written his own respectable riff.
ROB HASN"T BROUGHT ANYTHING TO METALLICA...he is the one who wrote the riff for All Nightmare Long...Death Magnetic is the 1st cd where ALL 4 members contribute to EVERY SONG....im pretty sure that shows he's done quite a bit for them lately...and yes a pick makes things SOOOO much easier....i play with fingers naturally and when i find something that's going to take time learning i pick up the pick and fly right through it...finger picking gives u the ability to do a lot more if ur good enuff
one album doesnt mean rob is bringing alot to the table.jason contributed more n metallica hardly let him do shit.not just in music either, jason brought a style n attitude that u dont even see today wit rob.i jus think rob is better off gettin back wit suicidal tendencies or something cuz he has no place in metallica.
as for picks, playin wit a pick doesnt determine wether ur good or not.its about preference, some jus prefer the sound of a pick.picks give a cleaner more crisp sound.plus u can keep up wit the guitars,u cant even do that wit fingers alot of times.
None should speak negative about any of Metallica's bassplayers, be aware that these guys are a handful of the best and perhaps unique bassplayers. And asides that, they have great characters, they have to swallow some crap, but inside, the desire to play music, overcomes the shit and even turns out gold. Learn to aprecciate the different tones and progressions in their songs. In ALL albums they made contains xATLEAST 1-2 songs you can relate to.Including DM; Nightmare, Judas
what the hell are u talkin about, there were plenty of times they played orion wit jason.u must be a young metallica fan or somebody jus now gettin into them.
@Jens0880 ok but how come that if he is so good why cant they turn his bass up so u can actualy hear him ?? i think he is kinda medioker since the band didnt show the world how good some guys says he is and taht thing about orion inst a clear fact ive just heard it somewhere
@Jens0880 Actually, for the bass auditions after Cliff was killed, Jason only had to know one song which was Master of Puppets. At the same time, Orion is not an extremely difficult piece (I was able to learn it after only a few months of learning guitar). So Jason is a pretty decent bass player but in a battle of the bassists, I'm sure Robert Trujillo or Mike Inez of Alice in Chains could beat him.
@tonellojohn Well, from what I've read Jason learned all Metallica songs in a very short period of time, and when asked which song he would like to play at the audition, he said "Any one you'd like". But this really is a pretty stupid discussion which I think wouldn't take place hadn't there been so many myths about Cliff Burton's skills (which mainly are due to the fact that he's dead). He rarely did more than doubling the rhythm guitar, something Jason frequently did during live concerts.
@Jens0880 Well from what I've heard in the scientific community, thunderstorms are caused by Cliff Burton rocking out in heaven, lol. But I don't really think that Jason is as good a bassist as everyone likes to think. His bass is tuned down all the way and when you do hear it, its nothing more than what everyone else is playing. Examples include King Nothing, Shortest Straw, and Fuel. If you were to listen to the bass tracks for anything prior to AJFA, you'd find that Cliff did other rhythms.
@tonellojohn Personally I really don't know what people like to think. J is not a big source of inspiration for me technically, it's his energy that I like the most. I'm not going into to the AJFA-matter, you would have to ask Flemming about that. Suffice to say, Metallica is a very guitar-based band (as is normal when it comes to thrash bands). And Cliff may very well have played other rhythmic figures once in a while, but what he did really had very few variations, fills and "colourings".
@Jens0880 That is true, but i also look at what was being played by James and Kirk, and I find that they often play the same notes and rhythms in different songs, so the same can be said about the guitars. I am not endorsing Cliff, nor am I putting him down. In a different matter, I have to say that I think St. Anger was a very good album.
@Pavulan4ik Because, as I've noticed, he had a lot more say in the making of an album than he should have. I also have come to see that Bob Rock was the producer just as they start turning down the Thrash dial, I think he influenced a lot of what was on Metallica, Load, ReLoad, and St. Anger (if you watch Some Kind of Monster you will see what I'm talking about). The minute he leaves, They release one of the greatest comeback albums ever, Death Magnetic.
@tonellojohn I also notice Jason copying rythm guitar...while Cliff always added something from himself not just copy James...even so I like how Jason rocks with a pick and his My friend of misery are one of my favourites alongside with Cliff's Orion solos!
@tonellojohn while what you're saying about Cliff playing counter-melodies rather than following what James was playing is true, you cant say Jason just followed James all the time
Nothing Else Matters, My Friend of Misery, Enter Sandman, Devil's Dance etc. Jason uses counter-melodies
but im sure a big part of why Jason's bass lines are mostly just following the guitar has a lot to do with James telling him what to do and how to do it, Jason wasnt given a lot of room to express his creativity
@williamtrevormcneil I'm not saying he always does, but he tends to. My Friend of Misery was one of only three songs that he had a writing credit for, so I would guess he would sound a lot different than he would have if James told him what to play.
It does make more wonder what songs Metallica could have potenially wrote if they let Jason into the writing process more. Needless to say I don't you can dispute it would have sound fucking awesome.
Badass on bass, you got that right man, But selfish? dude if anyone was selfish it was james and lars. Jason left because they were going nowhere and all his ideas were ignored. don't say things like that man.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Did u see the VH1 documentary on Metallica. When James got cought in the pyrotechnics all jason thought about was metallica being over. He wasnt worried about james. He is very selfish. Ur right tho The others were and they admit it. His ideas wernt ignored after the justice album. He wrote my friend of misery and they used that. The god that failed was also his idea. I think that rob fits real well. I miss cliff tho lol
If he was worried about metallica being over, that means he at least cares about the band, i'm sure he cared about James I doubt Jason said he didn't care about James.
@MrBaker0927 That wasn't the main reason Jason left though. He wanted to make solo albums and do stuff besides Metallica, but especially James wanted him to be ONLY in Metallica and not do anything else, so Jason left.
@Pwndlol dave ellefson does more fun stuff i think even though i like metallica and slayer better...but check out D.D Verni from overkill...seriously the guy is fucking amazing...from a pick player standpoint that's the guy you wanna be like...he can make it slap and pop with a pick and thrash out triplets and everything...best pick player IMO
@MUKGS i agree but trulio is good to i like his fingers but it so hard to play whit the fingers i do it and i must exers like 5 times a week for the stamina but is funn
@MUKGS I think Jason and Robert are more established because of Cliff dieing at 24. Jason's good, but i prefer the heavier sound with a finger pick. At the same time, Metallica is bad ass eight days a week.
@MUKGS Bass is pointless with a pick. Sounds too scratchy and buzzy, takes away all the fun, the challenge, the good raw sound and most of all, the talent!!

Sorry.

@stonecoldcrazy32 glad you understand it dude, alot people would probably trash talk you into agruements liek this alot, but i respect what you say, becaus ewell everyone has their opinions..
GiJoePSX 1 year ago
agree or disagree i dont care (my opinion) Cliff was the heart of metallica in the 80s. Jason was a great replacement and he followed metallica till what? 2003? now they have Rob which is better than Jason and is the closest they can get to a bassist that could do what Cliff did
tcscctant 2 years ago
I love how his bass sounds
SillyHatVideos 2 years ago 4
this bass sounds more from trujillo than jason
Fontoxx 2 years ago
Just listened to the song on my media player and synced this up with it. All I can say is, fucking brutal! Just proves to me that Jason was so much better for Metallica then Rob. Rob has some tasty stuff on DM, no doubt, but its honestly nothing Jason couldn't have played. You can argue that all Jason's doing here is copying the guitars but the track has so much power and aggression and when properly added to the song it adds so much. Its a feeling I just don't get when I hear Rob's bass lines.
MetalFan4ever1223 2 years ago 5
yeah but how does that apply when Jason's bass was turned down so much on the mix?
i mean it sounds good for when they played the Justice stuff live, but i mean on all the stuff on the black album and after, he really dint contribute that much.
plus when playing all of the old stuff on kill em all and ride the lightning and master of puppets, rob could play it so much better with ease than jason ever could and rob uses his fingers while jason used a pick

MrSFblack 2 years ago 2
ROB HASN"T BROUGHT ANYTHING TO METALLICA...he is the one who wrote the riff for All Nightmare Long...Death Magnetic is the 1st cd where ALL 4 members contribute to EVERY SONG....im pretty sure that shows he's done quite a bit for them lately...and yes a pick makes things SOOOO much easier....i play with fingers naturally and when i find something that's going to take time learning i pick up the pick and fly right through it...finger picking gives u the ability to do a lot more if ur good enuff
MWcod5 2 years ago
one album doesnt mean rob is bringing alot to the table.jason contributed more n metallica hardly let him do shit.not just in music either, jason brought a style n attitude that u dont even see today wit rob.i jus think rob is better off gettin back wit suicidal tendencies or something cuz he has no place in metallica.
MrSFblack 2 years ago 2
as for picks, playin wit a pick doesnt determine wether ur good or not.its about preference, some jus prefer the sound of a pick.picks give a cleaner more crisp sound.plus u can keep up wit the guitars,u cant even do that wit fingers alot of times.
MrSFblack 2 years ago
None should speak negative about any of Metallica's bassplayers, be aware that these guys are a handful of the best and perhaps unique bassplayers. And asides that, they have great characters, they have to swallow some crap, but inside, the desire to play music, overcomes the shit and even turns out gold. Learn to aprecciate the different tones and progressions in their songs. In ALL albums they made contains xATLEAST 1-2 songs you can relate to.Including DM; Nightmare, Judas
WhyTheRumGone 2 years ago 2
@WhyTheRumGone yeah it fucking does and btw they didnt play orion untill rob came along cuz jason was not good enough to play it
PoVerslaWe 2 years ago
i don't rele like newsted....but i will back up that i have definately heard him play orion before....
MWcod5 2 years ago
@PoVerslaWe
what the hell are u talkin about, there were plenty of times they played orion wit jason.u must be a young metallica fan or somebody jus now gettin into them.
MrSFblack 2 years ago
no you are wrong, they never played orion in full with Jason LIVE
heini92 1 year ago
@heini92
whether they played it in its entirety or not, they still played orion wit jason...
MrSFblack 1 year ago
@heini92
Ehh, I think Jason did Ktulu more justice anyway (npi)
Just listen to The Call Of Ktulu S&M, his basslines kick ass in it.
Scarecrow545 1 year ago
@PoVerslaWe
Some information for you:
1) Orion is not a difficult song, that's a complete misapprehension.
2) If Jason wasn't good enough to play Orion (which of course he was), he wouldn't have been in Metallica
Jens0880 1 year ago
@Jens0880 ok but how come that if he is so good why cant they turn his bass up so u can actualy hear him ?? i think he is kinda medioker since the band didnt show the world how good some guys says he is and taht thing about orion inst a clear fact ive just heard it somewhere
PoVerslaWe 1 year ago
@PoVerslaWe wanna hear how good Jason is. Look up Metalshock by Flotsam And Jetsam and he has his bass solo there.
UkrRusSlavic 1 year ago
@Jens0880 Actually, for the bass auditions after Cliff was killed, Jason only had to know one song which was Master of Puppets. At the same time, Orion is not an extremely difficult piece (I was able to learn it after only a few months of learning guitar). So Jason is a pretty decent bass player but in a battle of the bassists, I'm sure Robert Trujillo or Mike Inez of Alice in Chains could beat him.
tonellojohn 1 year ago
@tonellojohn Well, from what I've read Jason learned all Metallica songs in a very short period of time, and when asked which song he would like to play at the audition, he said "Any one you'd like". But this really is a pretty stupid discussion which I think wouldn't take place hadn't there been so many myths about Cliff Burton's skills (which mainly are due to the fact that he's dead). He rarely did more than doubling the rhythm guitar, something Jason frequently did during live concerts.
Jens0880 1 year ago
@Jens0880 Well from what I've heard in the scientific community, thunderstorms are caused by Cliff Burton rocking out in heaven, lol. But I don't really think that Jason is as good a bassist as everyone likes to think. His bass is tuned down all the way and when you do hear it, its nothing more than what everyone else is playing. Examples include King Nothing, Shortest Straw, and Fuel. If you were to listen to the bass tracks for anything prior to AJFA, you'd find that Cliff did other rhythms.
tonellojohn 1 year ago 2
@tonellojohn Personally I really don't know what people like to think. J is not a big source of inspiration for me technically, it's his energy that I like the most. I'm not going into to the AJFA-matter, you would have to ask Flemming about that. Suffice to say, Metallica is a very guitar-based band (as is normal when it comes to thrash bands). And Cliff may very well have played other rhythmic figures once in a while, but what he did really had very few variations, fills and "colourings".
Jens0880 1 year ago
@Jens0880 That is true, but i also look at what was being played by James and Kirk, and I find that they often play the same notes and rhythms in different songs, so the same can be said about the guitars. I am not endorsing Cliff, nor am I putting him down. In a different matter, I have to say that I think St. Anger was a very good album.
tonellojohn 1 year ago
@tonellojohn
I can't imagine Bob Rock playing bass on St.Anger!BTW why did Metallica sacked Bob anyways?
Pavulan4ik 1 year ago
@Pavulan4ik Because, as I've noticed, he had a lot more say in the making of an album than he should have. I also have come to see that Bob Rock was the producer just as they start turning down the Thrash dial, I think he influenced a lot of what was on Metallica, Load, ReLoad, and St. Anger (if you watch Some Kind of Monster you will see what I'm talking about). The minute he leaves, They release one of the greatest comeback albums ever, Death Magnetic.

@tonellojohn hey u're rite!!
Pavulan4ik 1 year ago
@Pavulan4ik Woo hoo first time I've been right. Ever.
tonellojohn 1 year ago
@tonellojohn I also notice Jason copying rythm guitar...while Cliff always added something from himself not just copy James...even so I like how Jason rocks with a pick and his My friend of misery are one of my favourites alongside with Cliff's Orion solos!
Pavulan4ik 1 year ago
@Pavulan4ik My answer to that is, picks are for guitars, fingers are for bass.
tonellojohn 1 year ago
@tonellojohn Sad but true lol, Jason's bass is hard to hear. In AJFA i just notice the resonances!!!
SuperBrictson 1 year ago
@tonellojohn while what you're saying about Cliff playing counter-melodies rather than following what James was playing is true, you cant say Jason just followed James all the time
Nothing Else Matters, My Friend of Misery, Enter Sandman, Devil's Dance etc. Jason uses counter-melodies
but im sure a big part of why Jason's bass lines are mostly just following the guitar has a lot to do with James telling him what to do and how to do it, Jason wasnt given a lot of room to express his creativity
williamtrevormcneil 1 year ago
@williamtrevormcneil I'm not saying he always does, but he tends to. My Friend of Misery was one of only three songs that he had a writing credit for, so I would guess he would sound a lot different than he would have if James told him what to play.
tonellojohn 1 year ago
Cliff was Metallica!!! But Jason was Metallica after him by your work, dedication, passion and many more... and nothing else matters!!!
MarcellusReadhead75 2 years ago
@MarcellusReadhead75 Cliff was metallica jason was the guy who helld his place and then rob was metallica
PoVerslaWe 2 years ago
You don´t understand my words man...
MarcellusReadhead75 2 years ago
It does make more wonder what songs Metallica could have potenially wrote if they let Jason into the writing process more. Needless to say I don't you can dispute it would have sound fucking awesome.

As a person Jason is a selfish whiney bitch but he is a total baddass on bass.
Mikefromtrenton 2 years ago
Badass on bass, you got that right man, But selfish? dude if anyone was selfish it was james and lars. Jason left because they were going nowhere and all his ideas were ignored. don't say things like that man.

Mikefromtrenton 2 years ago
If he was worried about metallica being over, that means he at least cares about the band, i'm sure he cared about James I doubt Jason said he didn't care about James.
MrBaker0927 2 years ago 4
@MrBaker0927 That wasn't the main reason Jason left though. He wanted to make solo albums and do stuff besides Metallica, but especially James wanted him to be ONLY in Metallica and not do anything else, so Jason left.
DaJames911 1 year ago
Jason deserves some award for like the best picking or something, it would be him and tom araya
Pwndlol 2 years ago
@Pwndlol dave ellefson does more fun stuff i think even though i like metallica and slayer better...but check out D.D Verni from overkill...seriously the guy is fucking amazing...from a pick player standpoint that's the guy you wanna be like...he can make it slap and pop with a pick and thrash out triplets and everything...best pick player IMO
hez1919 1 year ago
jason is one of the most badass metal bassists, too bad his best stuff was on the one album where the bass is completely missing

I 100% agree
ToaJoe 2 years ago
@MUKGS i agree but trulio is good to i like his fingers but it so hard to play whit the fingers i do it and i must exers like 5 times a week for the stamina but is funn
jotunrisinn 1 year ago
@MUKGS I think Jason and Robert are more established because of Cliff dieing at 24. Jason's good, but i prefer the heavier sound with a finger pick. At the same time, Metallica is bad ass eight days a week.
tonellojohn 1 year ago
@MUKGS they both are great
auroralavigne12 1 year ago
@MUKGS Bass is pointless with a pick. Sounds too scratchy and buzzy, takes away all the fun, the challenge, the good raw sound and most of all, the talent!!
