Why is this song so misunderstood? Everyone tries to find hidden meanings etc. It's very simple to a writer. The color "Purple" stands for/represents royalty, even spiritual fulfillment. Prince is simply saying here, that he wants to see his love interest basking in the rain of luxury.

@Rastis35 I like that you want to make it simple, but it was more complex. I was crazy about Michael Hutchence after Joe Elliott of Def Leppard introduced us. Joe & unknown Kurt Cobain had discovered me while on tour in 1983 at the age of 15. I wrote all the songs for Purple Rain. The lyrics "I only want to see you underneath the purple rain" was a reference to INXS 1981 album "Underneath the Colours". I also wrote songs for INXS, Kiss, Motley Crue (I borrowed Nikki Sixx name for Darling Nikki)
