I had a game kinda like this in the beta. The enemy was able to kill off pretty well all of my army, but I managed to warp in one or two DTs at the last moment to wipe out his whole army, which he had used every bit of resources on, and was mined out after. I sat back, built back my stuff and killed him off.

The guy I was against wasn't a douche, though.

I don't think (at all) that APM is a great way of telling how good someone is early game. Sure if it's 20minutes into a game in a pro match-up and both sides have 200/200 and thy're constantly in multiple different battles at different places on the map, with spellcasters and all, then sure. But a minute into the game, I don't think you should really be looking at their APM. Half of APM (especially early on) is just spam cliking a worker to go somewhere. Early on, less APM=more efficiency.

@qwas12348gr5 Actually, the reason pros spam APM early game is to warm up their fingers for when they attack. When you're attacking, you need to constantly keep producing units, but queuing up units is NOT good, so the very high level players will have to keep checking hotkeys to see when to inject, build units, warp in, expand, ya-di-ya-di-ya-da. Most low level players only use APM on what they need, and it's good, but won't get you into masters. And no, most of APM is checking on macro.

@246trinitrotoluene It does seem ridiculous, but I have friends in the Korean masters league, and they always tell me how important it is to get into the habit of checking production buildings, even in the early game with only one or two. You have to macro in the middle of your micro. Terrans have it worst, they have SO many production buildings to check. Zerg? Two or three hatcheries. Protoss? Check warpgate and maybe robo/stargate. Warming up your fingers means getting into the habit of it.

I play Zerg: hotkeys 1-3 for army, 4 hatcheries, 5-8 specific queens/hatcheries, 9-0 overseers

I can see how terran has a lot to check, for me, I have it under control.

First part of game my apm is 0-30, mid game during lulls 50-70, end game 70+, during battles, drops, etc 150-300.

My fingers/game do just fine without gratuitous clicking.

Am I GSL material? no. Can I beat most people? probably. I'd say im .55-.60 in diamond now

In lower leagues, most often the guy who macros and plans better wins. This is an example of the danger that poses - when you can win most of your games by just never stopping worker production, you don't learn some basic things, like GET OBS in a DT base trade. This wasn't so much a case of one player being better than another, but one player stumbling onto one lesson the other hadn't learned yet and exploiting it. I'd say they were about equal; they're just bad at different things
