90s shooters = Lightning-fast, adrenaline-pumping, pulse-pounding action, rewarding secrets and a MASSIVE variety of enemies and weapons! And only taking up a few megabytes, which was made by only a handful of people!
2000-present: Take cover, Play a shooting gallery of generic enemies. wash, rinse, repeat. Tank characters (health regen!). Gimmicks like vehicles only added here and there and the main interesting parts are the cutscenes and story!
I find just the opposite is true to be honest. Well, except modern shooters tend to be more realistic, what with cover and you know, strategy. Beyond "DODGE A FUCKING FIREBALL"
This isn't to take away from this game at all, I love the shit outta doom, but let's be honest with ourselves, it's slower, less realistic(although that's a point of taste rather than anything else) and has far fewer weapons than modern shooters. Pretty much the opposite of what you're saying.
Hey, that's YOUR opinion! I like older shooters MUCH better than modern. But hey, I accept that's what you like! (Hence why I said my opinion above might be controversial!) If we all did and liked the EXACT same things, we'd all be a uniminded society of robots!

@DevonWhorton It's a person doing a speed run. Playing like that takes a lot of practice and knowledge of the map and weapon and item locations. I used to be able to play a few of the levels like that but not through an entire episode like this guy. I think he's playing on ultra violence too, so that makes it even more ridiculous.

@ElseRipley (late reply xD) The music in these old games were usually in midi format (not entirely sure about this game, but I think it is). midi was really easy, but each sound card interprets it slightly differently so thinking your sound card sucked is a pretty good guess.

A friend tricked me into playing this at one point. I loudly reminded him why I don't do well in first-person shooters. (i.e. I freaked out in the tutorial level.)
It's the same MIDI track being played -- what you're hearing that's different is that most people who played Doom on DOS had a Soundblaster/Adlib compatible soundcard with an OPL2 or OPL3 soundchip. The OPL2/3 soundchip uses FM synthesis instead of wavetable synthesis (which is what you're hearing here, and is what virtually every major OS and soundcard have used since Windows 95/98).
I'm with you, though -- I prefer the original sound. It might be just nostalgia, but it has character.
shit this owns, i love that music, it was my game of young times :-), much better gameplay than Doom 3 ^^, I realy recommede this game to every dude who want nice FPS !
Wow, the game I judged all first person shooters on until goldeneye came out.... simply fantastic! If you have played halo without playing doom, I feel you do not understand how far we have come.

Yes, yes, and yes. The windows version sounds polished and sterile. I wish the poster would upload a dos version of this music.

Actually some of the game music is inspired by metallica. E1M1 is like "no remorse" from metallica. Im sure there is more too

so, im hearing metallica, and pantera on there.
metallica: 3:39 (lol, sounds like master of puppets)
Pantera: 5:36 (totally sounds like mouth for war)

I'm fairly sure this video is missing a channel of sound. Whether that's youtube's fault or your editing, it gimps some of the songs here.

Youtube turns normal def vids to mono by default, try adding "&fmt=18" at the end of the address to make it stereo.

Wow, the game I judged all first person shooters on until goldeneye came out.... simply fantastic! If you have played halo without playing doom, I feel you do not understand how far we have come.
