I have one and love it, you seem to be missing the heat shroud that goes around the fuel can, it allows you to raise the can up closer and you will get a much faster boil time.
I haven't used the Sterno brand cans, but I've used camp stoves that are similar, made from sugar cane, but I've never been able to boil water to a rolling boil with them. I'm going to pick up some real sterno and see if there's a difference.
Sterno and the newer Magic Stove with a wick are for cooking with the very light mess kits such as the one from Stansport. Boils 2 cups in a just few minutes in a small pot.
I got Coghlans folding stove is not light. Need to go shopping for a bunch of cans of fuel any brand. Safer than gas stoves, can is recycable. I am making lightweight stove out of 24 ounce can and a sterno can inside, no windscreen needed. I used a esbit stove on past camping trips and burned much fuel on windy days it was just for dehydrated food or tea. Should not handle burning can it is hot as hell. Those canteen cups are heavy, tall, and not round a small pot is lighter and flatter.
There's another chafing-dish fuel manufacturer called "Safe Heat." It's identical in size to the larger Sterno cans, and therefore fits perfectly. The difference is that Safe Heat uses ethylene glycol and has a wick at the top. The can has a screw-on lid that keeps it tidy. It puts out virtually the same flame as Sterno - BUT -its good for 6 hours instead of 3. Cost is about 1.5 x as much as Sterno.
@MetalTillIDie461 Yes, as long as you keep feeding it twigs. It is a good idea to line the bottom of the stove with foil or use an empty tuna can to help hold wood twigs and leaves, etc.
love your channel, great videos. if you keep a thermometer in your pack (cheapy whistle version) you only need to bring water to 140 degrees to sterilize it, this could save your fuel if on an extended stay or if using the smaller cans...just my 2 cents...keep up the good work
Perktube, try drilling some jet holes in the top all around the large sterno lid. Pop off the lid to fill the can, light it, warm it up, and then replace the lid.
for the smaller can drill the holes around the side near the top edge, when you fill it dont fill it too much or the alcohol will leak out the holes.
Just play around and see if you can get a satisfactory result.
This stove is quite a bit slower than the pressurized gas stoves. It doesn't cook nearly as fast as say an MSR or Jet Boil type system. It is however very dependable if you have time to use it. It is also very cost effective! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Ah, thanks for the video. =] I'm going on a camping trip to-night and my mom told me to use the Sterno stove she had but she isn't here to teach me how to use it. I'm so glad I found this video. It really helped! =]
About 2 cups. I know that is quite long compared to other stoves, but it was a very cold and windy day also. I'm sure you can tell that by the video. The Sterno stove is a classic, but it is not by any means fast when it comes to boiling water. It does however get the job done.
Actually yes. My cousin has one as well and several years back while on a camping trip, he ran out of Sterno. He used coals from the campfire in the stove to cook. It turned the stove all black lol! I guess he could have just put his mess pot on the coals aside the camp fire, but his method did work.
I have one of them sterno contraptions also but I put my alchohol stove inside which fits perfectly in the holder and it makes a nice windblock as well. With an alchohol stove you can boil water in 4 mins. so imo ditch the sterno.
Good Idea! I have seen this done before and your right, it does work well. The sterno is an old- fashioned way to cook and it is a little slow. I mainly use it when I have plenty of time or no other options available to me. Thanks for watching and commenting.

could you use wood as a fuel source for this?

Is there a way to turn an empty sterno can into an alcohol stove?

Thanks! I will try it.. I assume we're talking about denatured alcohol right? That's what I heard is the de facto alcohol fuel.

nice vid, 15 minutes for water? HOW much water were you boiling,
Average good time is how long for 2 cups of water?
I say 3 minutes. give or take 11 seconds.

@mrJOEmann jetboil (which is one of the quickest) takes 3 mins to boil two cups,
10 mins plus is normal for a stove like this

Thanks,
