How very disappointing! It looks like a giant bread van.
Disappointing also for a nation that gave the world Stephenson, Gresley, Stanier and Ivatt, that such an ugly locomotive should be imported in the first place.
Is that from a bussiness point of view or the foamers point of view lol. Just an example, a driver, good mate and collegue of mine took a 59 and 4300 tonnes over Savernake a few years ago, i asked him if that was possible with a 60, his reply was no fuckin chance! Good ere init ;) In haulage terms, it goes like this- 70,59,60,66,58,56,67. Dont right stuff off just because its american I do alot of railfaning over the pond and they use some prety mean machinery compared with the crap we got ere
You don't know what point of view I'm giving as I like to remain anonymous.
A Class 60 has hauled 4000+ tonne trains in the past so don't know what your talking about. This arguement can go on forever. How do you know if a 70 can even haul more than a 60/59 when it has not been tested that much. Think you'll find the 67 is not even a heavy hauler so why even mention that. So far I have never heard of a 66 hauling a freight that is heavier than what I've known a 56 to haul.
I know well a 60 has hauled 4+k, I repeated what a driver said who worked out of Merehead for years, he was also involved with the class 59 trials back in 87. A 59 has supperior TE than a 60 im afraid. Its based on the US SD40-2, probably about the most sucessfull loco ever built anywhere, nearly 6000 built between 66 and 78 an other dirivatives exported to all corners of the globe, but they must be crap eh, cause their not built by brush. you mentioned the 67 before I did!
Wow, realy clever. Any chance you can predict next weeks lottery numbers per chance?? The bloody things hav'nt done a weeks work yet. 56' is old technology, it has a reworked 50's engine FFS. How can you even begin to compare, its like comparing a ford seiera with a range rover sport lol. We cant build good loco's anymore, we cant compete, get over it FFS. Thats why FLHH have gone to the U.S!
They aren't even in the UK yet these are brand new, I assume you were taking the piss but if not these are new builds from GM in Canada the first ones will be in Britain in about two weeks I think.
OK - I've now had the official reasoning behind the hideous front end - it's all about EU crush-zones for the driver - fair enough.
But seriously - these have clearly just been literally bolted onto an existing design, or are you seriously suggesting these features couldn't have been incorporated into a more aesthetic nose?
And does this mean that all EU locos will have to look like this from now on??
Would you buy a car that looked like it had a front end made of Lego?!
Did Reliant have a say in the bodywork design.. they look like they were designed by the people who designed the famous 3-wheeled robin! Sorry but they are juist plain dreadful and i hope the boat sinks before they get to our shores
Hmmm... Im not overly fond of these engines... my brain says 'these are like the people who try to be cool, but aren't...' if you get what I mean? Good idea though. They could have been a lot worse...
That paint scheme looks pretty sharp there man! The pictures made me think that the units were already in the UK. But they're actually in GE's backyard! I think I'll call them 'green snails', because of their colors, and design.
My goodness what a truly awful looking bit of kit. I have to say I am rather fond of 66s and 67s now ... but this?
Theres some fantastic designs (37s being the best example) - why couldn't we have something a bit nicer to look at that doesn't look like the evil mutated lovechild of a 58 and a 67?
As long as they do the job they're designed for thats the main thing!!!
Nice one Howard. Thoughts on them now I see there in the FL livery. Well looks better & toned it down a bit, but the front end!! May be it'll grow on me, but i 'll wait till i see it in the flesh 1st. Glad you posted this one. 5* cheers.
rumours the fleet will start of based at Leeds (just round the corner from me) before moving south, nothing is certain yet. still there the most ugly locos i've ever seen
there being used on intermodal i herd tht eastleigh where on about having some of them dunno weather tht is true but who knows lots of 66s gunna get stored then
i like them

They dont have a stove for "brewing up" though.= bad.
Nice console layout, everthing is lcd screens, no dials. Even outside fuel guage is digital(wonder how long that'll work for)? ;)

The 70 is better than a 59, 66 or 67 but not as good as either a 56, 58 or a 60.
So it's probably about average for a freight diesel.

What The Fuck Do They Look Like
porter6669196327 2 years ago
No it doesn't, it's a disgusting change!
421mog 2 years ago
I think the designers had to incorporate certain crashworthiness standards.
back2frinky 2 years ago
What do you mean?
421mog 2 years ago
This is from Freightliner:
The front of the cabs are a result of future proofing the design to the pending locomotive TSI.
The TSI calls up two euro norms that require a 3m cube survival space in the cab for the driver as well as the requirement to fit anti-climbers.
As a result we have three stage crash provisions:
Stage 1 - Collapsible buffers
Stage 2 - Anti climbers engage to prevent climbing and also second stage crush zone
Stage 3 - Crush box hidden behind the buffers.
back2frinky 2 years ago
My god - the designer of the front end's having a laugh. They look like the backs of a fridges. Horrific.

Whatever. It'll still make a nice change from 66's.
