But the new sign would be British regulatory style, not American. American regulations say "Don't do this", and list everything that is prohibited. British says "Be like this", and expects people to try to stay close to the ideal. At least this is true in industrial regulation. A proper American sign should list every possible circumstance where you should not use the emergency brake. I'm very slightly kidding...

I have questions about the fire thing. If there is a big fire that is spreading, wouldn't it be better to hit the brake so that you can exit the cart into the tunnels? Assuming that there is no access to a fire extinguisher, of course.

And if you do step onto the tracks, would you be electrocuted, considering that metros don't receive electricity from overhead cables?

@Tattas999 The rails themselves aren't electrocuted, but there is a third rail that sits slightly higher than the track bed that DOES carry the electricity and it's usually on the opposite end of a platform unless its a two-island platform station with three tracks

Excellent vids, music is always great... In Mexico City's subway, there is no emergency brake. It is just an emergency signal that is noticed by the chauffeur and the people in charge of managing transit. It's up to them to stop the train, they ussually do it until the next station, where a team of cops and paramedics is waiting to attend the emergency :) that might work in New York.
