OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMGGGGGGGGGGG, i have been searching for this all day long ad when i was a kid i was like watching it 10 times per day!!!! omg dude I LOVE YOU MAN!
I laugh at people who say Irish dancing isn't a sport. It takes an incredible amount of coordination, flexibility, finesse, and just plain stamina. (I should know.) I'd like to see all of those cheerleaders just try to do something like this.
@AineHawkins I totally agree. I remember one dance I felt my legs would fall off but over time it just came naturally ... and in the end it's worth it
This is awesome! It's even cooler that I have Irish in me from "Gentleman Jim" Corbett! He was my great-great uncle! It's true! my mom's name is Kathaleen Corbett, my grandfather's name is Jim Corbett, and his father's older brother was "Gentleman Jim" Corbett! I'm so proud! :D
It amuses me when people say negative comments about Michael Flatley. He started Irish dancing when he was 11 years old, and was told he was too old. He created 'Lord Of The Dance' when he was 37 years old (26 years later) and was told he wouldn't succeed. He never listened to anything negative and is now owrth over £500 million pounds! I personally think we should applaud his passion, talent and refusal to listen to anything other than his own self belief x
@The007news That's great! I'm glad you too can appreciate his talent! I really do laugh at all the comments about his 'arrogance', but personally I think he earned the so called ego x
@HOWSHAR79 You're right. I don't want to be his friend so I don't care if he's arrogant or not. I like to watch him dance and at that he is BRILLIANT.
@HOWSHAR79 So true. People love to begrudge success. Especially here in Ireland - you are taking your life in your hands being a black sheep rather than a white sheep. Look at what we used to do to Sinead O'Connor, and it turns out she was right about a lot of things we had to learn the hard way, in our own sweet time (about the Vatcan specifically).
@HOWSHAR79 I agree 100%. The chances of Michael Flatley making his mark as a dancer at the ripe old age of 37 (in the dance world, anyway) were remote in the extreme. Still, he went for it and boy, did he ever make his mark. Riverdance was a worldwide dancing phenomenon and I for one salute his ambition, his vision, his fortitude and most of all his amazing talent.
Awesome awesome awesome!! I have this VHS too, it must be somewhere in my basement. I love this cast. Jean Butler is amazing, and it's true, say what you want about Flatley but he is amazing. Thank you for posting! I look forward to watching the other clips, which I haven't seen in years. Bring this out on DVD!
Well you can what you like about Flately....pompous as he may be - frankly I've never spoken to the man so I canna judge..but if you compare his steps to those who have followed...sadly I have to say: none fly so high or step as lively as the pompous little Flatley man.
Thanks for posting this! I have the VHS tape, too, but have never seen this number on youtube before. Gosh, he really was the BEST!!! I had tickets to see him in Lord of the Dance in 1997 but then the show cancelled. Missed my chance. :-(
I have this show on VHS, and I must've started watching it at least twenty times, but I've never finished it since I always rewind this part and watch it over and over. Pure magic, to say the least.
@imjunipernow A lot of practice, they run through the dance so much some of it becomes muscle memory. I remember when I used to dance the steps would run through my head like the words to a song and I'd sing it to myself while I performed. Once I learned the "song" I could do the dance with or without music. I still remember bits and pieces and I haven't danced in over 6 years. But you learn that steps, you repeat the steps a million times, and when it's time to perform you just know the dance.
@apblonde2010 Can I ask some more questions? I've always wanted to know what happens if the performer suddenly can't continue (feels ill, injured, just doesn't want to, forgets steps, etc.) - - - Do they just casually leave the stage like it's part of the routine?
@imjunipernow I'm not too sure about this one. Usually once the dancers get to a certain level they will dance through anything, even if they feel sick or they're injured. If they are seriously injured or sick they might not even go out to dance in the first place, depending on how the dancer feels. I supposed in a extreme case where in the middle of the routine they feel like they're about to pass out they would leave the stage, but they try to avoid that.
@imjunipernow i've heard that dancers can step up and take on any role in the blink of an eye. e.g i know one of the dancers in the main troupe who isnt even one of the main dancers, who told me that he was asked to take on the lead (Michael Flatley) role 5 mins before he went on stage. He did it and it went off without a hitch.
Michael Flatley is definitely my fave main male dancer of Riverdance. The others I have seen don't have the energy or flamboyancy that he has. GO MICHAEL!!!
Two separate people watched this video, and died from the shock of the awesomeness that was before them. Their loved ones later found them, and, due to the grief that took hold, were forced to dislike this video. This can be the only explanation for the two dislikes.
Michael had an energy and passion for dance when he performed that went way beyond technique. While subsequent dancers in his roles in Riverdance and LOTD have good to excellent technique, they don't stir the heart and soul like Michael did.
@bsmithofjy --ME2!-- I AGREE-- I remember when the Riverdance first came out & that nite. The world watched in stunned amazement at what they were seeing .. Irish dancing taken to a whole new level. The Riverdance is also pretty much responsible for bringing our beloved Irish culture to the forefront with renewed resurgence.
I think people should thumb my comment if they broke a piece of furniture/ornament/something you really shouldn't have broken trying to do this when you were a kid :)
@TommyBoy249r i think the leading man should have a bit of ego - the guys that took over from Flatley, although technically gifted could never reach that 'showman' level of Flatley. He's like a modern Rudy Valentino, with the long hair and stuff.

im not really a big fan of flatley, i dont like the showy stuff and the big shirt and everything but the music that he has is absolutely amazing. for every show he does. well done
Now, anybody else get the messsage? Who would reel around the sun? We are alive and well in Dublin, Ireland and places not too far away. Riverdance, especially, is overflowing with it.
my parents introduced me to this when i was very very little. ive loved it ever since. we'd always tap our feet to the rhythm and hum to the melody. this song gives you such a rush!! i just HAVE to smile every time i hear this song.
@SolidGold1980 i respect you a great deal for admitting that. 1) you're admitting to admiring a male dancer. 2) you're admitting to pretending to be him...sorry, i'm used to American men who are so machismo it's nauseating so this a nice change of pace for me :)
@crimsonclover87 I have to agree with you on the machismo thing and I am a American woman. It becomes too much. Always gotta prove something. Not bashing or anything. Anyway, I still love this show to death and Real around the Sun is my most favorite! (*_*)
I used to pretend I was the girl who first turned around because I kind of look like her :) I know how to tap and dance ballet but I've yet to learn Irish dancing :( YET!
I agree with you breeandsparkle, I would visit my grandparents 4 times a week when I was little, and I would ALWAYS watch this. It was never Disney films for me, always shows and dance productions.
I have this show on VHS too. I must have watched it about a million times. Apart from a couple of dances from other shows I liked, this 1995 show is the best ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
I used to take Irish dance lessons and we would warm up to this. I injured my knees in an accident and have not been able to dance for almost a year now. :(

If you're feet do not move hearing this music, you're either dead or a stone.

Now, anybody else get the messsage? Who would reel around the sun? We are alive and well in Dublin, Ireland and places not too far away. Riverdance, especially, is overflowing with it.

oh my god this is amazing !!! these dancers are something unique...too bad that they are not always appreciated for their work.

my parents introduced me to this when i was very very little. ive loved it ever since. we'd always tap our feet to the rhythm and hum to the melody. this song gives you such a rush!! i just HAVE to smile every time i hear this song.

@SolidGold1980 LMFAO!!! Good one my man!!!!!!!

@SolidGold1980 i respect you a great deal for admitting that. 1) you're admitting to admiring a male dancer. 2) you're admitting to pretending to be him...sorry, i'm used to American men who are so machismo it's nauseating so this a nice change of pace for me :)
crimsonclover87 1 year ago
@crimsonclover87 I have to agree with you on the machismo thing and I am a American woman. It becomes too much. Always gotta prove something. Not bashing or anything. Anyway, I still love this show to death and Real around the Sun is my most favorite! (*_*)

How could I get dances from my one of my Riverdance dvds and save them to my computer so I could put them on YouTube?
Mysticmilotic 3 years ago
I agree with you breeandsparkle, I would visit my grandparents 4 times a week when I was little, and I would ALWAYS watch this. It was never Disney films for me, always shows and dance productions.

When all the little girls were watching Aladdin and Cinderella, i was watching this. I love it so much.
