  • I think cat made powershift and standard clutch models same time cause in our family company has -74 d4d and it has poweshift. 3 gears forward and 3 reverse and no clutch.

  • My D3C LGP has powershift i love it even the steering clutches and foot levers gotta luv em!!

  • Old Iron still getting the job done

  • Why do you mention its direct drive ? Did Cat sell high drive and direct drive at the same time, or can you read the age from the drive style ?

  • The drect drive means that it has a standard clutch. Not an automatic or power shift. This dozer has a hand clutch. It has 5 speeds foreward and reverse. I will make a descriptive video for you if you want.

  • Ah i see, it has nothing to do with the position of the drive sprocket, but about if a torque converter is fitted or not.

Up to which machine size did they sell them with direct drive ?

Yeah a descriptive video, i'd love to see that ! In Holland you hardly see any bulldozers, most of those jobs are done with wheel loaders or tractor drawn graders.

  • The term Direct Drive really only came about after the Power Shift Torque converter models were introduced.

A Direct Drive is just a "normal" style drive train with a clutch lever and a gear stick, like a car.

Direct drive's were made from the beginning, and all models came in them from D2 to D9.

In the late sixties, power shift came in. That means a torque converter and a gear stick that can be quickly shifted from forward to reverse while moving. ( it's easy ) No clutch.
