Hi can anyone tell me if they know of a artist that was well know for his Abstract landscape oil on board work. Hes in wiki and also in australia art achives but i have no idea of where his pictures are, all it tells me is that his pictures are in private collections.
I cant find any of his oil paintings anywhere all i know is that they fetch alot of money. his name is-
(Norman Reginald Baggaley) the oil painting i have is dated 1965.
One critic said, " But before I go overboard praising this show, the truth is that its pretty uneven. Power Flower, given prominence on the main wall of the gallery, is a real clunker. The debt to Chris Johanson weighs heavily here; use of converging lines to symbolize the infinite is better left to Mark Grotjhan, not to mention Jay Defeo. Hawkes and Doves, with its swishy mysticism, looks like it could be a sign for those depressing 24-hour psychics that no one goes to... "Daily Serving
Garish coloring, mix of not too good figure work, and abstractions that don't stand out for any originality. Google search has story that says he's one of the 10 best in NYC? That doesn't bode well for the health of NYC art. Speculator was the best in show. People there didn't seem to like it either. Study Braque or Matisse or Rothko for better use of color.
"Nonchalance". That's a good word for this kind of work. For some reason, his colors remind me of Neo Rauch; also, the striping tends to get tiresome and monotonous..Jules the striper....I like the little pieces though ( 7.07). I wonder what the surfaces look like, the paint handling; difficult to see from the video. Thanks James.
So it seems kinda hard for you to get a word in with artists. Is that because you have the camera do you think? I hope they're not resentful or anything.
@IchorDarkness I think Jules says it on the vid. He'd talk later, and invited me to his after party but I didn't go. There's incredible pressure to be "on". Some people are just bashful.
many of the people i've seen at a large number of these shows are total snobs. how do you deal with that?. sometimes i wonder if you are just wearing a extremely strange shirt just to mess with people and get awkward reactions. do you wear your bike helmet inside?
@ragratt, I've been involved in this scene for decades, so I'm used to what outsiders might consider weird attitudes. I don't let any of it bother me. If I did, I'd probably just stay curled up in a fetal position with the blankets over my head all day. And yeah, sometimes I do leave my bike helmet on, (but not this time).
@ragratt these people aren't snobs, there is just a lot of nervous energy in the room. The artist is nervous, the dealer is nervous, the collectors are sincerely looking..which makes everyone tense and people are drinking and out having fun. All of this should not be misread as snobbery :)
@MrWowforever In every social group, there are snobs, and within the art world cognoscenti there are definitely snobs, but in this case their my snobs, and I love 'em.
@jameskalm on further reflection.... snobs are among us......self righteous, entitled misappropriaters................things are shifting mr. kalm................
Really like Jules' work, not quite sure still how this work stacks up with his previous more politically pointed work though, still great coverage of a very interesting show! Dig the Peter Doig like foliage
Love you James Kalm! Too bad "last show". What is happening in this world? I am so glad I am an artist. I can imagine other things happening in my mind. Thank you for all your work to get art info to all of us in the hinterlands. :-)
