You need to understand what DP were listening at the time. Acid House and Techno mainly, which at the time were the popular sounds in clubs. New Wav reflects the influences of the time. Has less soul than later stuff, but Homework was very hard in places.

I really like this, and I love daft punk, but it baffles me as to how their sound changed so dramatically from 1993 to 1996 and thereafter. This is the kind of record one would could produce in a bedroom with limited equipment. There is a secret to their updated sound, and it's not the fact that they just got better. Someone helped out.
