Suspiria is possibly my favorite horror movie. It was one of the most unique, beautiful, scary films I'd ever seen. The use of color is so different, and I LOVE Goblin's score. Just amazing. Regardless of how unimportant story is in the grand scheme of things in this movie, I still liked the story (and the idea of the Three Mothers) and how surreal and atmospheric it was. Deep Red was an excellent film, too.
@11poketrainer How about Stephen King and Cleave Barker, If anyone is better than Dario Argento would be them with Wes Craven right behind him and Tobe Hooper and Wes Craven next in line.
BTW, I fell in love with Dario Argento's film, DEMONS, trust me, its a great film and I totally recommend it, plus it was when he made George Romero make a run for his money on the film Night of the living dead which I also love him too!
I think "Inferno" is underrated. It was a worthy sequel to "Suspiria" and really kept the deep, dreamlike feeling of plunging deeper and deeper into the mystery. Argento's world of basements below basements and attics above attics is so much like my own more vivid dreams in its brooding character.
ILikeToDissectGirls: Comparatively no, Hooper is NOT consistent as a Horror director, nor as talented. Yes, Chainsaw 1 and 2 are unfettered classics., Funhouse is, well, fun....as for Poltergeist, we all know Speilberg had much to contribute; even he now admits this (just look @ the shots, style, editing). The rest of his Horror omnibus is pretty crud, sorry but true.
Suspiria, that's operatic horror at it's zenith. Visually, he can't be touched: his work should be looped in a gallery - his shots, use of gels, tracking techniques, cranes are unspeakably peerless. Just fucking brilliant! Romero, Argento, Carpenter (sometimes), Stuart Gordon, these guys are legends. Hooper snagged a certified cult hit - once! Romero is a genius of editing, seemless character contortions, sub-plots, etc. Gordon is gore with pop-corn-coated cheesyness. Argento forever!
I love Dario Argento! If you want to see real sophisticated foreign horror movies Italian style, I recommend Argento! Susperia and Opera are two of my personal favorites.
I just read one of the coolest horror screenplays of all time! It's at Circalit.com. It's called Something In Return, and it's fucking crazy!
You have to become a member, but it's free and simple and absolutely worth it.
The story's about a devil-worshiper who has to sacrifice his son to claim immortality. Talking about one seriously wild and disturbing story. It's gonna make one hell of a movie!
Dario Argento is so misoginist that is disgusting and sick, he always brake the limit of any misoginist guy, in that aspect its like a hitchcock type, so that kind of men are already condemned just for the real damage they create on people minds that provokes cruelty over innocent women

I agree, man. they really only shed light on his early "mothers" films, when they could very well have discussed his classic animal trilogy. I suppose his gialli work may be misconstrued as mere mystery thrillers and not "horror" in the traditional sense before a dumber audience though! ; )
With all due respect to Dario, but why hasn't this man taken the time to learn how to speak English in the last 35 years? He's obviously VERY well known in English speaking countries. You would think that he'd have picked it up over the years, at least for the interviews?
I grew up watching Argentos movies, and i love most of his movies. But some movies can be hard to take in. But when the camerawork, effects and music works perfect together like in Suspiria and Deep red it´s unbeatable horror in my eyes. A dreamlike world!
That reminds me of the magician "Richiardi" who combines horror with his act of "Sawing a lady in half". Believe me, it's not cliche! He combines great special effects with the gruesome thought of killing his daughter!
bavas better director

I would like to hear Argento's own voice in Italian and then perhaps a less weird translator. This guy is a dead fish!

Argento didn't make Demons.
Aside from one or two effective moments, it didn't do much for me.

@11poketrainer James Wan and Leigh Whannel have no link whatsoever to "Paranormal Activity" and Whannel is not a director.
