when my grandfather use to hunt, he first used a .22 caliber rifles so he would not damage the skin. The only problem with that is most of the people would take the shot from far away so they would not have to run on sketchy terrain. Using a small caliber on a fat animal meant most of the injured seal had time to ran into the ocean and die. That is why there is a regulation that force them to use sticks. Now any kind of hunting is dirty but red blood on snow as more contrast. This feed families

Thirdly, the population of harp seals in Newfoundland has risen from 700,000 to almost 7,000,000 in the last 30 years. They aren't exactly in danger of going extinct. What is in danger of going even more downhill, is the fishery.
If the population of these seals continue to grow like they have been, they'll overeat they're food source and die anways.
@Zunnable First, It is illegal to kill white coats who are 12-14 days old. After 2 weeks they are still considered pups but can be hunted legally.
Second, not all bullets kill the seals on the first shot. Because their blubber is thick a lot of seals who are not shot in the head will suffer bleeding out, they aren't going to get more than one shot because bullets cost money.
Third, from 2004 to 2007 1 million seals were killed. That's only 3 years, now continue that for 20, 30 or more years.

Only in Russia it is illegal to hunt seals less than one year old. While it is true that firearms are widely used, if the first shot isn't fatal three out of eight (approx.) will use the club. Finally you exaggerate the amount of seals. The DFO estimates that there are 3.8m - 7.1m seals thus puttimng you on the more extreme.
@Zunnable If you were truly educated, then you would understand that predation has a cycle in ecosystems. You are correct that because of the rapid growth of seals, the fishery is going down. This in turn, leads to a decrease in seal population because they are extinguishing their food supply. Their population will slowly decrease due to a lack of proper nutrition on its own. As the seal population lowers, the fish will increase once again and both will reach their carrying capacities.
I bet you don't give a fuck about bugs or rodents being exterminated by the mass, do you? They're living creatures too, and they are exterminated on a much greater level and yield no skin, fur, meat or other valuable resources. You also probably don't care about fishing either because fish are ugly.

when my grandfather use to hunt, he first used a .22 caliber rifles so he would not damage the skin. The only problem with that is most of the people would take the shot from far away so they would not have to run on sketchy terrain. Using a small caliber on a fat animal meant most of the injured seal had time to ran into the ocean and die. That is why there is a regulation that force them to use sticks. Now any kind of hunting is dirty but red blood on snow as more contrast. This feed families

Second, It doesn't matter if they're extinct or not. You wouldn't do this to dogs or cats. I don't see a difference with helpless seals.

At least the seals get to live free and don't pollute the environment as part of industrialized agriculture. I'm going to go eat healthy seal meat so that there's more of a market for the meat and it doesn't go to waste. Than I wont have to eat a more cow that went through worse.

Sealing hunting may seam cruel but it is not seals do not suffer and are skinned while they are dead. Every year Canadian seal hunters don't go past half of there quotas. Seal hunting is allowed because there population is too high and over 10000 die every year of famine or disease because of over population.
It would be more unhumain to let all these seals live just to say you save them but they would die of over population shortly.

First off, it's illegal to kill baby seals in Canada.
Secondly, they don't bash their skulls in anymore, most seals are now shot.
Thirdly, the population of harp seals in Newfoundland has risen from 700,000 to almost 7,000,000 in the last 30 years. They aren't exactly in danger of going extinct. What is in danger of going even more downhill, is the fishery.
If the population of these seals continue to grow like they have been, they'll overeat they're food source and die anways.

@Zunnable First, It is illegal to kill white coats who are 12-14 days old. After 2 weeks they are still considered pups but can be hunted legally.
Second, not all bullets kill the seals on the first shot. Because their blubber is thick a lot of seals who are not shot in the head will suffer bleeding out, they aren't going to get more than one shot because bullets cost money.
Third, from 2004 to 2007 1 million seals were killed. That's only 3 years, now continue that for 20, 30 or more years.

Only in Russia it is illegal to hunt seals less than one year old. While it is true that firearms are widely used, if the first shot isn't fatal three out of eight (approx.) will use the club. Finally you exaggerate the amount of seals. The DFO estimates that there are 3.8m - 7.1m seals thus puttimng you on the more extreme.

@Zunnable If you were truly educated, then you would understand that predation has a cycle in ecosystems. You are correct that because of the rapid growth of seals, the fishery is going down. This in turn, leads to a decrease in seal population because they are extinguishing their food supply. Their population will slowly decrease due to a lack of proper nutrition on its own. As the seal population lowers, the fish will increase once again and both will reach their carrying capacities.
