    yo tan rapido.

    Saludos. RL

  • Thank you for this recording: this is such a wonderful interpretation.

  • @Nirvanagar This musician is great. I agree that 50 seconds is a perfect timing target. Please check out my channel to hear what 51 seconds sound like. :D

  • you are a great player, i've been studying these etudes simples, i believe you are pretty much the best thing on youtube palyin leo brouwer.

  • This study : 10 minutes to learn, 1 month to feel it.

Felicidades!

  • @manuel582703 Gracias Manuel! Me alegra que te gusten estas piezas.

    Saludos, RL

  • @manuel582703 Thank you very much!!, I am glad you like them.

    RL

  • @manuel582703 Gracias!!

Bueno aqhora a practicar!! :)

  • you are very good at guitar.... but i have somthing to say....too fast is not good ... these songs have a very good meaning that you destroy with your speed.... try to play the synody lightly and the melody more strongly.plz thumb up so he will be able to see this message

  • I listened the 1st etude yesterday.I love the bassline, reminds me mathcore for a reason!Brouwer's music is awesome.

  • Very good playing, rarely to find on Youtube. Congratulations!

  • @GitarowaPanda I have seen from yur page that you have had a fine music education and also listen to very fine music, I congratulate yuo on that! :)

    RL

  • @Nirvanagar Really? when i studied this piece i didn't see anything saying that. The only thing i saw was the "movido" tempo marking.

  • @Nirvanagar Actually just VII says that, "lo más rápido posible." The rest have different and specific time markings.

  • great playing, however you play very fast, your technique is still really well!

    Love it!

  • hihi i played that first song at a age of 14 :O

    i bet i failed hard at it:P

    cant remember

  • Hey Raymond! Just posted a video of myself playing the first 5 Brouwer etudes if you got time to check em out, it would mean a lot ! Love your stuff man

  • and the 3 piece was also to fast you should not play it so fast

  • Great video and performance Raymond! I love Brouwer's Etudes and am going to do a few ones like these on my channel soon! It will obviously not top yours though!

  • Etude II seems a bit rushed, though maybe that's just me. I can play the first one in a minute or a little less, but I need to work on slowing down, so my teacher gets me to play Etude II in a minute thirty or so. That being said, I really like how you kept so locked into the rhythm on no. II, I sometimes lose my feel for the tempo at low speeds.

  • Yeah there are a lot of different interpretations for pieces. I like this piece played somewhat fast because the melody comes out pretty nice.

  • Tambem estou a tocar este estudo xD

  • Francesco TARREGA is one of the best!

Vivaldi improvisations are pretty good on the guitar too :D

  • i have to learn these 5 etudes for my high school guitar class, im a freshman, but i think i can pull it off

  • excelent playing, what's the tempo in the first etude? thanks

  • bravo!!!!!

  • i came to the realization that it is just not possible to play classical guitar as good as people like him, especially when I am occupied with my job almost every hour of my life. I still enjoy trying and playing them much slower and with much more mistakes and at the same time listening others with excellent performances. Thank you for sharing. Now i will go back and practice in my limited time.

  • @zadigjaja

Its not about having a lot of time. More about practicing smart. Even with a limited amount time you could achieve this.

Start it slow, then work your way up. Make sure you can play it all the way through consistently, then try speeding up!

  • very good!!!

  • Absolutely beautiful playing. I love these works so much!

  • i appreciate raymond is a very good player but the first piece is dictated as lasting 1 minute exactly in the score and he rattles through it in 40 seconds. thats a fairly hefty margin of error!

  • @eddypfunk It is a good point an an interesting one. Languaje comes from music as man communicated first by simple sounds. As in speech, the speaker may deliver sentences and words according to the message and the feel of the context. Music is the same and tempo markings are not in my opinion meant to be followed strictly.

  • When we listen to different orchestra we found that the choice of tempo for the same work varies from one conductor to another, it is the same for the guitar. I do like also slower tempos and may play it that way sometimes :)

  • @eddypfunk Is that Joa Bosco that you play in your video?

  • @guitarrarl hey! no its joao gilberto, um abraco no bonfa...played badly!!

  • only one critisicm with the first one would be maybe play the E as a shorter note and not have it as a pedal. Other than that its fine

  • Fantastico. Beautiful pieces played wonderfully!

  • wow, you play the 1st one really fast. Sounds cool that way, but i also think it's supposed to be played at a more moderate tempo, as opposed to a rapid one. I'm sure you're aware of that and you're just enjoying the music. I love listening to your playing. You're awesome.

  • Thank you!: Actually I am listening to the melody and placing the accompaniment is a second plane. If we focus on the accompaniment then it would seem very fast. If we listen to the melody sings then even #3 does not seem so fast. The same could be said for the other pieces. I practiced them slowly but now these tempos seem natural for me and my main intent is not speed at all but the flow of the melody etc. :)

    Saludos.

    RL

  • Yeah, i actually played this piece in a recital today. The hand tremors were not helpful, ha. Yeah, in the music it says "sing the bass" so that makes sense.

  • I really like what you've done with these pieces - there're some very imaginative interpretative things going on. Thanks. My only doubt is regarding the second piece - I play it much more slowly and romantically. Any thoughts?

  • My daughter's teacher would agree with you . He says it's almost a lullaby ...

  • thank you ; your video will be a great help for my daughter !

    Best regards from France .

  • Hey:

Amazing, from mexico me too try play the etudes.

    Thank You a lot !

    Lucky

  • Hi Tex: Thank you! Un saludo desde Florida.

    Raymond

I am sure you will love the following series of etudes by Brouwer.

  • Fantastic performance.

You have helped me no end with my own studies.

    Janie (England)

  • Hi Janie: Thank you! More than 30 years since these pieces were composed they still sound modern. What a Genius our dear friend Leo Brouwer is!

    Raymond

  • great performances! thank you!

  • I like the video, i have been playing the brouwer etudes lately. So amazing

Do you know any brouwer pieces that would just kind of be the next step up after the etudes?

  • Hi greencircleclassy :

Thank you. Yes sure there are many here a few:

Well there the Etudes that follow 1-6th and then pieces as

    "Tres Apuntes"

    "Danza Caracteristica"

    "Elogio de la Danza" etc

I would recommend these after Etude XX

    RL

  • BRAVO

  • Gracias!! :)

    RL

  • great review! you are a vewry good guitar player... im wondering if you have the sheet music of the piece called( da cameron noire) by leo brouwer! if you have it could it be possible to send it to me? thank you for this video, really good job!

  • Thank you. I am sorry but the piece you ask for is not in public domain. If you do a Google search you will find publishers of this piece.

  • Where can you find the book shown at the beginning of the video?

I have most of his solo works that are published by Max Eschig, but I'm trying to find more of his recent works like "El Ciudad de las Columnas".

  • Hi:

I am sorry but this exact publication is over 20 years old and not available. You will find this music and other newer publications when doing online search.

    RL

  • great

  • i'm doing etude I atm, i'm not so fast yet.

  • Thanks, Raymond ! It was a pleasure to watch and listen to you. Best regards,

    Matthias

  • Hi Raymond! Great video!!

I have to learn etude I and V. What do you recommend me to do for etude V because i'm having problems with the tempo.

    Hope you can help me.

    Thanks

  • Dear friend : The best method to understand and play any rhythm is to subdivide or subdivicion. For example, lets say that you have in the first beat an eight note followed two sixteenth in a 4/4 or 2/4 etc time signature.. Then we must think of four sixteenth per beat counting 1234 per each beat so the first note gets two counts and then the next note plays on 3 and the following on 4.

  • Thank you very much!! I'll follow your advise!

    Thanks a lot!!!!

  • aha! I see we are both awake and on line. Ok, one more thing, It is best to do the counting very slowly even one number per second. After 3 or 5 tries you should be able to do it. My favorite rhythm and "solfeo" method is Hilarion Eslava "Solfeo de los Solfeos" !!

    RL

I got to go zzzzzz to sleep now :)

  • ok, thanks for everything! I'm gonna do what you told me.

i'm going to sleep too :D

  • cont....

Remember, we are counting 1234 one number per each sixteenth.

once you can understand well the first beat, play the or study the second beat without any ties. Then, apply the tie but always keeping in mind the sixteenth counting or 1234.

  • It is important to learn each rhythm cell as a word and not to learn them by ear by listening to recordings. Like words rhythm can become flexibly by interpretation :)

rouwer in etude V gives us a good tway to practice "sincopacion" .

I hope this explanation helps a little

  • Yes, this was very helpful.

    Thank you!

  • Very Very nice¡¡¡¡ .....en realidad muy bueno. Felicitaciones.

  • Hi amigos

    KagurazakaYO

    Popocaepet

Thank you for your comments. I am very glad that you like my interpretation of these fantastic pieces.

A beautiful thing about us as musicians and artists is that we can ( while respecting the work of the composer) discover and bring to life new things to life in a piece. Therefore, each guitarist potentially has something valuable and beautiful to offer :) We all should share our findings and the results of our efforts :)

    Thank you!

    RL

  • WOW so is this what it's supposed to sound like? hahas. My music teacher gave me this too, and I thought i had it down. I do; but it's at snail pace .___. WOW, very nice. :D:D:D

  • hahah me too!!!!! but 'movido' i have a feeling relates to 'movement', like at a fast pace. ?

  • heck, my bass doesn't sound a quarter like that...

  • Hi: This guitar is a Ramirez and it has a brace on the bass side by the sound hole. It does produce a deep bass. Try practicing the pieces playing only a voice at a time. On Etude I play or study the bass melody only. Then practice the im accompaniment and bring it to a second plane while applying dynamics.

    RL

  • I love your playing. The dynamics/sensitivity are superb.

  • Hi bethnagle:

    Thank you very much!

    RL

  • Gotta learn the first one by 12 o clock ;__;

  • great work on all of the etudes especially number 3. You had blazing fast speed!

  • Hey, this Great, your a savior!!!

My music teacher at school handed me the music to play this but i didnt know what it was or what it sounded like.

    THank u!!

  • :) Thank you.

    RL

  • thats the exact same as me!

  • Hi, Yes is a 1984 Ramirez 1ra A.

    RL

  • Is that a Ramirez you are playing?

  • Love the phrasing Mr. Lohengrin. You play Brouwer beautifully. You must have a little Cuban in you. ;)

  • dingadang : Thank you very much for such an inspiring comment. :)

Happy New 2009 to you, friends and family.

    Saludos

    Raymond Lohengrin

  • Finger is fast and songs are good.

  • Good job on all of them.

The only critique I would make is on Study 2. It seems like you are skipping the eighth note rests and starting those phrases on the beat, which sets the rhythm off.

    Otherwise, good job.

  • I never even knew this type of music existed. I use the types of cords quite frequently when I write my own songs, I just dont know they are called . . . I always felt them out. Seem to be a lot of open suspended type cords.

  • I learned this Brouwer studies during my guitar studies. I hear always in my head my guitar teacher saying the number one was good, but the number V was out of ryhtm. And she shout so loud that I was more and more out of rythm! But I think I shall play them again.

  • To study the rhythm well, subdivide and or count Example divide a one beat in 4/4 (1/4) to 2/8 or 4/16 and study the note group slowly.

  • Thank you for this lesson. I shall try it.

Saludos.

    Raymond

  • Thank you k2625299. Actually, this was recorded after my lessons late in the evening with a regular photo camera not a video camera no tripod or special lights and very limited time available. I just wanted to give credit to EK for his help on this :)

    RL

    5)Tocar distintos tiempos o velocidades.

    6) Tocar subdividiendo.

    7) Tocar tiempo.

  • Great playing, I'm working on these studies myself, just wondering why they are called 'simple' studies...Anyway, your video is a great help to me. Great sound, timing, dynamics.

  • Thank you! Looking at the Right Hand formulas we will see that on each etude the RH formula is simple. Etude I alternation of P melodic bass and then im acompaniment. A great training etude should address a formula or difficulty at a time as in These Brouwer Etudes.

Now perfecting these simple formulas and using them in producing music with all sudleties is not an easy task and requires lots of attention, study and growing time.

    cont..

  • So yes, they are "simple" etudes because they can be studied at a beginners level, but they may require years to perfect so they are not so "simple then" :) . They are great etudes and have this quality

of keeping the students and players interest ,have passed the test of time and have made our journey as guitarist much more enjoyable :)

    Saludos amigo!

    RL

  • I'm learning classical guitar now just to cultivate my right hand. I've been playing jazz for some years now, but always with a plectrum. Fingering the notes, as in these studies, is not a problem, but attacking the strings with the proper right hand fingers, AND finding the good tone, that's another issue...But my teacher is very pleased with my progress, and the way studies 1 and 2 sound. Now I'm working on 3 (speed, help!)and 4. Besides great study material, these studies are also great music

  • you play them much much to fast if the composer intended them to be that fast he would have wrote them that fast.

  • yep

  • WoW! what a fast hand..You are great..I want play like You in future..

    Saludos!

  • Hi YoungGuitar: Thanks, I practice all my pieces very slowly and then increase the tempo over time :)

Your tempo when playing this piece is fine..just need some guitar tuning. Greetings :)

  • biennnn.... buen sonido

  • He is my favorite modern classical guitar composer! Thank you so much for addin this!!!!!

  • my record for the first study simple was 1 minute 35 seconds

  • tinotrivino Hi: If the piece is played clean and the bass line sings well I am sure a piece would sound lovely. I enjoy playing Etude one at a slower tempo also.

    Saludos :)

    RL

  • Thanks for posting maestro. Love III but regret kind of way short

  • Hi BlueJazzyClassic : Yes it is a short study ha! but there is magic in it :)

If we listen and sing an individual voice of this piece every time it is played we then become very aware of the soprano, alto , tenor and bass melodies it contains and their interaction.

    RL

  • I always practiced I and VI and just as indicated in the note and later it plays itself not me. That means the capability of Brouwer^^

  • OMG

i just want to thank you for this, you have no idea how long I have searched to find out what the title of these random songs I could not stop playing on my guitar.. *small storying incoming*

i played guitar from 7-11th grade, my 10th grade teacher was amazing and gave us a bunch of great guitar pieces, these being one of them, when he left, I remembered how to play them, but all titles were lost, you have helped me find a small piece of my puzzle. thank you so much. The search continues :)

  • Neat! Your teacher gave you good material indeed. These short pieces are required in any major guitar school in the world. I heard from Maestro Brouwer that they were written for a very talented student he had in NY when he was in US studying. The student was a young girl I do not recall her name.

    Thanks for your comment :)

    RL

  • Me encantan estos estudios de Brouwer.

    Muy buena ejecución :D

  • Hola aladaris Gracias. Tocas estos estudios? Son muy buenos. saludos. RL

  • thanks for shareing, it is fantastic :D

  • Awesome!

  • hey Raimond, nice interpretation, your sound is great, warm, and inspiring, i also love these etudes, been playing since i started, check out the New Etudes, their are awesome, hope you can upload more videos, i have some videos here in youtube, check them out, Piezas sin titulo 1 2 3, sorry for mu gramatical errors, saludos desde Mexico.

  • Hi amigo: Thank you for your comment. I am familiar with the other series, si and I have played them in performances and audio recordings. I have to find time to put them on video. I will check your work in an instant! I am glad you find inspiration in these pieces :)

    Saludos, Raymond

  • Hola

    exalipoor

Also check "Quitate de la acera" I used to listen to this piece played by Brouwer on the radio every day . It was the intro for a daily guitar program.

    RL

PS I played it over ten years ago but need to bring it to memory.

  • I salute you! Fantastic interpretation of those master pieces. Im looking forward to the last 5 etudes (if you will publish them hopefully)!

  • Thank you. I played the etudes but need to record them. I will post some in the near future :)

    RL

PS I love Hungary :) I have many friends there and also have been to Buda and Pest Hungary

  • Very nice, I am inspired to learn this material now. Thank you.

  • love the work, keep posting, learned these pieces years ago but i keep going back to it dissonance is part of life why don't we hear more of it in popular music?

  • My theory is that in the past popular musicians had interest in learning about music and many received a formal music education. Today we buy an expensive instrument with lots of presets and believe to be making music...

  • wonderful job. love playing these, love the dissonance

  • no me gusta su interpretación

  • that picture in the beginning is very inspiring. Is it a picture of brouwer?

  • Yes is from his concerts at Marti National Library in Habana, Cuba and his concerts in th 70's

    RL

  • It is so great to see other people who appreciate this kind of music as much as me. My friends always make fun of me for playing it. P.S. I love this song I play it too

  • e55amg7 and

    gobigbluewarrio

Thank you! I am glad also that other people appreciate the video. In this age of very simple music played on the radio, it is hard for people to feel comfortable with these harmonies. It takes time for the ear to get used to it.

I was exposed to this music very early and the music that is at its roots. Ha! Maestro Brouwer your music sounds modern still over 30 years after it was composed! Good works last forever :)

    RL

  • Amazing... Very Helpfull

  • Great performance. I'm glad you put this on YouTube because I am trying to learn all of these pieces over the next few weeks. You have given me a high standard to aim for. :-)

  • jwright123456789 :

Thank you very very much, it means a lot to me that this video will be valuable for your study.

I am glad you are studying well.

    RL

  • very cool

  • awesome!

  • Thank you :)

    RL

  • I happened to played 3 of these 20 studies. Check out my YouTube video here,

    No1, v=47VnzyjMRZA

    No6, v=TKQ27rCjPm8

    No7, v=C7pZ7mFcIH4

I want to reply No1. Please give me some advice. I'd appreciate you help.

  • tombukto Thank you! When I play this piece I try to have in mind works by Brouwer of the same time period. I guess it helps to know Leo Brouwer since I was very young and also his father Dr. Juan Brouwer :) .

I will try to record this with a different camera in the future. This video was recorded with a good photo camera but not a video camera and the audio could be better.

  • the best interpretation of étude 1 i ever heard!!

  • grazie..grandissimo

  • grazie, molto! :)

    koyteSSS

  • Estudio no2 is one of my favorite guitar pieces...moment of grace for brouwer, i am sure

  • amazing! thanks.

  • Sharps and Flats are Brower's way of connecting the guitar with another dimension of the Cuban culture! Felecito su amable interpretacione!
