Hello. I just bought the extreme with back drag reel and the fly reel. I do alot of backpacking and this looks to be the best way to save weight and space for me. Question, where are all the videos with the fly reel in use? I cant find them? Are the eyelets on the pole large enough to allow the transistional sections of the fly line to tippet knots to pass through? Looking at the one i just got in the mail (extreme) its going to be a tight fit...any info would be appreicated. Thanks!
those things are cool, too bad u gotta order online =[ i dont have plastic =[ on;y paper =[ id keep it in my glove compartment with sum jigs, bam freetime killer =]
@joshuabtran , depends on the shoe, but I can't recommend it. I stick to the ones that were made for the PenRodExtreme. Thanks for watching and commenting.
carrying a huge net around kinda defeats the purpose of carrying a compact fishing rod. i hope you are not eating those carp cause thats just nasty. still kinda cool looking forward to buying the goliath
@SuperBull84 Thanks for watching and commenting. I usually like to use my pen rod for smallish panfish, that's what I enjoy most. I like bass too, but those sunnies and bluegills fight out of all proportion to their size. I went after carp for the video to show that in the right hands, the penrod extreme is a serious tool. I have eaten carp, expertly prepared they are good but not as good as other fish. Asian carp are another story.... they's good eatin'.
how do you catch carp? I have been trying to catch a carp for two years. I have just started tieing flies. So I've been tieing flys that look like grass blades and bread balls. So can you help me.
I have been using corn, new to flyfishing but wooly buggers seem to be popular. The book "Carp on the Fly" is a good one to read for that kind of info.
Should I get a pen rod extreme or the pen rod goliath?
I know the goliath is fairly new. I dont want to buy something that hasn't been tested by the general public. I feel like I can have more confidence in buying the PRE.
im getting one of those coleman that you see on tv....im just gonna use it for bluegill though at the river walk where i live.....those are pretty fun i do real fishing with my real pole
truth be told, none of us in the videos are really bait caster users. The one I know that examined mine thinks it would be fine, I have managed about two decent casts with mint, but I'm am going in to my third year of fishing.... Perhaps this year? You can be assured that when I get good enough with it, I'll post a vid.
im very good with the bait caster just we mostly for white sturgeon and strippers i jsut want it for like blue gills that we try to catch for bait or like trout and cats at the park near my hosue
That sounds like fun, i caught some gills using dry flies and clear bubble floats with my PRE, hilariously fun. Blue gills put up quite a scrap and very light tackle like the PRE is perfect for them. I like to let them tire out before bringing them in, it's more fun and you shouldn't horse any fish in the the PRE.
Well, it it looks like it won't go through I wouldn't force it. The PRE was not designed to work with a fly line , the reel was meant as a novelty drift set up. I'll have to get with Brandon and see how he does it.
A kid named Brandon uses 00wt dt-f cut in half with a Pen Rod Extreme Mini Fly reel. I have not tried it. I know my 3wt line will fit through the guides, but just barely and I would not recommend it.
Sage 000wt dt-F it's expensive and you cut it in half putting about forty feet on the reel and you have room for about 30' of fireline or other braid backing if you go light enough. It floats
Yes it does. Six pound test fireline is one of my favorites, with four pound and two pound test Trilene close behind. I wish it was easier to get four pound test braid near me. Six pound test is a bit heavy with the Pen Rod Extreme IMO
Thanks, I am doing good with fly fishing and believe it or not there is a fly line small enough to go on the PRE mini fly reel. That should be a fun video. Stay tuned.....
AHHHH no, no it does not you must do that yourself as i remember. I am not that skilled with baitcasting gear. if I hit the pond thirty percent of the time I'm happy, but I am getting there.
sorry to be so stupid, but 09 was only my second season fishing, not sure what you mean by spool itself. Break it down for a moron, because that's what i am.
That's the baitcaster extreme, the new one. The Large and mini models don't have full functionality like the extreme does as far as I know. Thanks for watching!
Theoretically, you could. I don't recommend it as the reels are designed to work with the pen rod extreme. I would be hard pressed to find a reel that works better as a combo than the MX15 All Aluminum, and I have a nice little collection of ultra light reels.
is it strong enough to lift fishes cause from the videos i've seen no 1 want to lift them..nothing big though im talking about maybe a nice size bluegill or crappie
i love this video, ive also found circle hooks to be able when using penfishingrods. You dont have to set the hook with them, so you dont have to worry about your line snapping or rod tip breaking
Thanks Cousin!, I just tried the banjo minnow with my PRE this very evening. Caught a little Largemouth from a heavily pressured bank where it has been VERY slow lately. I did notice that the bass was firmly nailed even though I did not execute a hookset. It was close to the bank and I actually thought I was snagged.... The shape is close to a circle hook, so that makes good sense! thanks for the tip.
are you sponsored by them? or do you just do these videos for fun? Im looking into getting an ultralight to fight smaller eater sized channel cats on while i got my big poles out
We mostly do this for fun. These are the ultimate ultra light rods and reels. We love it so much we want others to know about it. Sometimes, we may receive gear to evaluate. Good luck, and thanks for watching and commenting.
They are like fun on a stick multiplied a zillion times. Take good care of them, they will take care of you. Mine have retired the rest of my gear, except fly rods. I am only using the fly fishing gear to get good enough to put a fly line on the mini fly reel and do some Pen Rod Extreme fly fishing. Also feel another carp hunt coming on..
Tight lines, welcome to the ultra light master's guild :)
I absolutely dig fishing the PRE from my inflatable kayak. you can get cheap ones at the big box stores that usually last a season or two before the seams go. If you weigh less than 230, there is a 26 pound I.K. that floats 500 lbs, has a 3 yr warranty, and is affordable for almost everybody. My I.K. can be backpacked, but one that weighs 20 pounds less would be better for that.
That sounds like a good move. If I did not have a boat right now, would buy a little S.E.. Since I have a portable I.K., looking at building my next boat, instant boat style on a Bolger design of some sort.
wel were im 16 my om is convinced that is is not safe to goon a small lake in a partable boat but i saw it is i can swim good and everything i told her it can hold 880 lbs but she thinks i will flip i got to find a way to talk her into it i have my own money for it and everything
i just feel like if i had it i could see more of nature travel with it and fish on it(:
If the first thing you buy is a personal flotation device ( life vest) it may ease her mind some. Taking an online boating safety course ( there are free ones) and showing her the certificate might help too. In addition to the above, I carry a cheap cell phone in a vacum sealed baggie and always tell people where I am going, and when I should return. I am only 48, but that puts my wife at ease. Good luck!
i got a inflatable with a troling motor a few days ago she lets me go on it with my step dad and makes me were a life vest i hate to wear it but i do so i can fish out of it it has rod holders in it too i got it on sale from 200$ to 60! lol it is 10ft
That sounds like a nice boat! Congratulations! Don't get too bummed out about the life vest. I am 48, you can tell I ain't gonna sink. You can't tell from the videos that I swim like a fish and even as old and fat as I am, can beat young athletes in 25 meter freestyle if they don't have a good stroke ( not real swimmers though) . I NEVER GO OUT WITHOUT MINE!!!!! Watch Fish FIghting Basics and you will see me wearing mine in 90 degree heat. Every year some idiot drowns 'round here...
yea i would always at least keep mine with me im a good swimmer too lol but good swimmers can drown i cant stop watching ur vids lol they make me wanna carp fish but thers not much around here with em
Here is a little tidbit I got from an old crusty coastguard sailor, now retired and working on the Cape May to Lewes Ferry:
"FULLY 80% of all drownings investigated by the Coast Guard and state Fish and Wildlife agencies would have been prevented by a properly worn PDF" If there are other fish around, there should be some carp, unless you are in ALaska. Try putting some corn on the bottom and see what happens. Try bank fishing first, they will take your boat to China...
P.S. The vest I wear is a type III Stearn's angler vest from Wally World. It;s pretty comfy and has about six real handy pockets, actually makes fishing from my kayak easier.
P.S,P.S. - My vest is fantastic for the Pen Rod Extreme, I carry a spare reel, a spare spool, lures, floats, etc. That way it's all right there. It also squares away my line clipper, hemostats, leatherman, swiss army knife. That makes up for the little bit if heat and hassle.
Here's the best tip I can give you, aside from reading the instructions. You have to let the fish run, no matter what size it is. Watch my Fish Fighting Basics Video, notice I don't even try to land the bluegill until he's done fighting. Sometimes it can be scary when a fish takes off and you feel like you have no control. But when you land them, it's all that much sweeter. Good Luck and tight lines.
It takes a higher level of skill and finesse to bring in a nice fish on these rods. Ultra light fishing is unique, the fight is the centerpiece of the experience. The rods also require more care than others. We have more videos to make! It's hard to get it all into ten minutes. The Pen Rod Extreme is only for skilled experienced anglers. Landing a big fish with these is the thrill most are looking for. Those who take the time to learn will succeed.
They are a whole lot of fun. I caught a ten pound king carp with a one piece ultra light rod and four pound test right before I got my Pen Rod Extreme. It was fun, but nothing like the PRE. I hope you get one, and if you do, do what I did. Start out with bluegills or other really small fish. The big boys will wait until you are ready for them. Good luck and thanks for watching.
Yea ima try ordering one..whats the best rod? from them the extreme? and i need to buy a new reel lol i never knew how to use bait casting reel but spinner reel is easy
The all aluminum MX15 rear drag is the top of the Pen Rod Extreme food chain. All of the rods are the same 65 gram ( just under 2.5 ounce ) masterpieces. The front drag is very popular and affordable. I like them all, and am learning to use bait casting reels. My favorite was the front drag until I got my hands on the all aluminum MX15 rear drag.
i bet it cant even handle a blue fish in saltwater

The all aluminum MX15 rear drag is the top of the Pen Rod Extreme food chain. All of the rods are the same 65 gram ( just under 2.5 ounce ) masterpieces. The front drag is very popular and affordable. I like them all, and am learning to use bait casting reels. My favorite was the front drag until I got my hands on the all aluminum MX15 rear drag.
