This is one of those examples of art that is just SO perfectly WHAT IT SETS OUT TO BE. The intergration of the wonderfully adapted music of Khachaturian with the images, all propelling the story forward... masterful! Never understood why this film is not usually ranked higher in the Coen Brothers canon. It's absolutely one of my favorites! Thanks for posting this sequence. I can and have and will continue to watch it again and again.
You know, I've always felt this was one of the weakest Coen brothers films, yet I love this entire sequence. Just goes to show you, even their worst is better than the rest.
I think this is one of the most perfect sequences in the history of cinema. Let's not forget the incredible adaptation of Khachaturian's music, this is like a video clip of classical music.
@syto207:20 is the Sabre Dance. Wiki says "The piece was arranged and integrated into the wider score by Carter Burwell", so the 5:00-7:20 part before it was probably originally composed for the movie.
@syto20 The part starting at 7:20 is the Sabre Dance. Wiki says "The piece was arranged and integrated into the wider score by Carter Burwell", so I presume the 5:00-7:20 part was originally composed for the movie.
A prime example of the magificent and captivating awesomeness when screenplay, acting, editing, sound, art direction, costuming, direction,m and every facet of a work gel together, all come together in nigh-perfection....
I just want to see Jennifer Jason Leigh clips from this damn movie. She did a great job. Can't find them anywhere. I don't give a shit about the damn hula hoop.
I have seen this film so many times I've lost count. Although it perhaps not the best or most emotive film ever made of all the films I have ever seen, none quite exemplify what Sidney J Mussberger proclaims at 01:11,
That's an awesome clip. Wish the music hadn't ended so abruptly. Original poster should add Aram Khachaturian's name to the keywords so it's easier to find in the search!
I nearly cry whenever I see this because it is so damn good. The is a virtuoso sequence. Perfect. Amazing editing and visuals, flawlessly set to music.
These directors quite simply know what they are doing.
I love the use of Khachaturian's music. There are so many clever clips in this scene. I love the children bursting from the school house screaming, as if that is their daily routine -- chaos...

The early 90's were a Renaissance for film making. So many good movies back then.

I agree. It's one that's hardly ever talked about and it didn't do very well at the box office. It's one of my favorite Coen brothers movies.
