@TheExiledTexan Uhh, no. I love Neil and I am a drummer for many years, I practice Rush and Zep routinely. Bonzo is tied with Neil talent wise. There is Nothing Neil does that Bonzo couldn't have done in his prime. I think Bonzo had a faster left hand than Neil too.
If you are going to compare drummers you have to consider the æsthetics with the music. Is the drummer just a virtuoso, or is he/she adding significantly to the song.
Bonzo was truely a master shaping zep songs. I would say that Peart was just as good, but some could get fatigued form listing.
Phill Collins was a master as well in some ways better than the other two by shaping the music Genesis made. Though many marginalize him because of his love of popular music.
Thanks for posting this. A rare view of a master at work. This is shot when Neil is in his later years. He has 30 years of playing under his belt and he is still a monster player. A special thanks to Neil for the words of wisdom so prevalent in your written masterpieces e.g. fountains of lamenth, hemispheres, Cygnus X-1, A farewell to kings, Cinderella Man, 2112, Natural Science, and last but not least Subdivisions. Merry holidays Rush Heads and may Rush receive the long overdue accolades.
I am not into drums, but I can see why so many people really admire this guys talent..I love the song..first heard it when I was 16...where did my youth go?..Time is the fire in which we burn.
Just WOW ! What an amazing artist. My friends always give me this John Bonham stuff (not that he was not great in his own right.) But Neil takes home the prize !!!
I listened to this song while taking off in a jet, and as I looked down upon the lights of LA and heard this music, I realized that I was truly alive.
@delweine Best drummer, best guitarist etc....is subjective to us all but the thing about Neil Peart is that so many other performers will say he's the greatest and he has been voted the greatest countless of times on many a list. I also have my faves, Neil is definitely on top of my top 3 list.
One of my all time favorite Rush songs. Never have heard it live and CERTAINLY have never seen Dr. Neil play it live. New found level of respect for his talent. Thanks to whoever posted this. Nearly note for note from the studio version. AmAZING!
Neil's drumming in this song has always fascinated me.
It's not particularly complex, but I love how each verse has a slightly variation to the beat...changing up the hi-hat pattern and the ride cymbal patterns, etc.
It's masterfully composed...every single stroke is perfection. Neil is a musical genius.
anyone who has ever played drums in their life ,novice or pro, do you guys have any idea what this guy is doing and how tough that is?The licks are not that tough but my GOD the timing!!!
@TheRealSyFyGuy I don't worry about stupid kid shit like who is "better". Everyone brings something unique to the table. He may be the best to you but that doesn't mean he is the best because he isn't......no one is.
@julianisdope You must be a teenager. Your omnipotence has overwhelmed me, and I bow to your wisdom, oh swami. Goob. Yes, if you listened to all the drummers of the world there indeed would be a BEST one. It's a simple fact that there are some goo, and some bad, at anything. Life doesn't give out a sticker for participating. There are winners, and losers. Come back when you have a few actual miles under your belt. Buh bye.
@TheRealSyFyGuy -_- Why do you treat music like a competition? Fine i know there is zero way to get through your ignorance so i am going to stop replying after this. I've been playing for 14 years and make a living off music/drumming so whatever you say i know that i have "miles under my belt". The funny thing is if there was a "best" drummer in the world it sure as hell wouldn't be keith moon(nothing against him). So please just fuck off and go educate yourself a little. Fucking idiot
@julianisdope No call for vulgarity. I started playing the drums in the VERY early 70's. I don't make it a competition, and it doesn't have to be to have a best of. You are the one who needs an education. In manners, as well. And I don't care who you would pick, I was speaking for me, so go sit on a duck you ignorant d-bag.

@ mpesta > I have to agree w/ you,Subdivisions IS a masterpiece, one of my favorite songs of all time!! @SteveIronmaiden Why not ask why someone once compared Clapton to GOD. Neil Peart is more godlike with the drums than Clapton ever was with a guitar. Class dismissed.
